    Evidence of Color Coherence Effects in W+jets Events from ppbar Collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV

    Full text link
    We report the results of a study of color coherence effects in ppbar collisions based on data collected by the D0 detector during the 1994-1995 run of the Fermilab Tevatron Collider, at a center of mass energy sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV. Initial-to-final state color interference effects are studied by examining particle distribution patterns in events with a W boson and at least one jet. The data are compared to Monte Carlo simulations with different color coherence implementations and to an analytic modified-leading-logarithm perturbative calculation based on the local parton-hadron duality hypothesis.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures. Measurement of the B0-anti-B0-Oscillation Frequency with Inclusive Dilepton Events

    The B0B^0-Bˉ0\bar B^0 oscillation frequency has been measured with a sample of 23 million \B\bar B pairs collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric B Factory at SLAC. In this sample, we select events in which both B mesons decay semileptonically and use the charge of the leptons to identify the flavor of each B meson. A simultaneous fit to the decay time difference distributions for opposite- and same-sign dilepton events gives Δmd=0.493±0.012(stat)±0.009(syst)\Delta m_d = 0.493 \pm 0.012{(stat)}\pm 0.009{(syst)} ps1^{-1}.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figure, submitted to Physical Review Letter

    The thermal production of strange and non-strange hadrons in e(+)e(-) collisions

    Becattini F, Castorina P, Manninen J, Satz H. The thermal production of strange and non-strange hadrons in e(+)e(-) collisions. EUROPEAN PHYSICAL JOURNAL C. 2008;56(4):493-510.The thermal multihadron production observed in different high energy collisions poses two basic problems. (1) Why do even elementary collisions with comparatively few secondaries (e(+)e(-) annihilation) show thermal behavior? (2) Why is there in such interactions a suppression of strange particle production? We show that the recently proposed mechanism of thermal hadron production through Hawking-Unruh radiation can naturally account for both. The event horizon of color confinement leads to thermal behavior, but the resulting temperature depends on the strange quark content of the produced hadrons, causing a deviation from full equilibrium and hence a suppression of strange particle production. We apply the resulting formalism to multihadron production in e(+)e(-) annihilation over a wide energy range and make a comprehensive analysis of the data in the conventional statistical hadronization model and the modified Hawking-Unruh formulation. We show that this formulation provides a very good description of the measured hadronic abundances, fully determined in terms of the string tension and the bare strange quark mass; it contains no adjustable parameters

    Measurement of branching fractions for two-body charmless B decays to charged pions and kaons at BABAR

    We present preliminary results of a search for charmless two-body B decays to charged pions and kaons using data collected by the BABAR detector at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center's PEP-II storage ring. In a sample of 8.8 million produced B-anti-B pairs we measure the branching fractions B(B^0 --> pi^+pi^-) = (9.3^{+2.6}_{-2.3}^{+1.2}_{-1.4}) x 10^{-6} and B(B^0 --> K^+\pi^-) = (12.5^{+3.0}_{-2.6}^{+1.3}_{-1.7}) x 10^{-6}, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. For the decay B^0 --> K^+K^- we find no significant signal and set an upper limit of B(B^0 --> K^+K^-) 6.6 x 10^{-6} at the 90% confidence level

    Measurement of the time dependence of B0Bˉ0B^{0}-\bar B^{0} oscillations using inclusive dilepton events

    No full text
    A preliminary study of time dependence of B^0-anti-B^0 oscillations using dilepton events is presented. The flavor of the B meson is determined by the charge sign of the lepton. To separate signal leptons from cascade and fake leptons we have used a method which combines several discriminating variables in a neural network. The time evolution of the oscillations is studied by reconstructing the time difference between the decays of the B mesons produced by the Y(4S) decay. With an integrated luminosity of 7.7 fb-1 collected on resonance by BABAR at the PEP-II asymmetric B Factory, we measure the difference in mass of the neutral B eigenstates, Delta_mB0 to be (0.507+/-0.015+/-0.022) x 10^{12} hbar-s^{-1}

    Measurements of charmless three-body and quasi-two-body B decays

    We present preliminary results of a search for several exclusive charmless hadronic B decays from electron-positron annihilation data collected by the BABAR detector near the Y(4S) resonance. These include three-body decay modes with final states h^{+/-}h^{-/+}h^{+/-} and h^{+/-}h^{-/+}pi^0, and quasi-two-body decay modes with final states X^0 h and X^0 K0S, where h = pi or K and X^0 = eta^' or omega. We find B(B^0 --> rho^(-/+)pi^(+/-)) = (49+/-13^{+6}_{-5}) x 10^{-6} and B(B^+ --> eta^' K^+) = (62+/-18+/-8) x 10^{-6} and present upper limits for eight other decays

    We have studied the B^+/- --> J/psi pi^+/- and B^+/- --> J/psi K^+/- decays using a 20.7 fb-1 data set collected with the BABAR detector. We observe a signal of 51+/-10 B^+/- --> J/psi pi^+/- events and determine the ratio BF(B^+/- --> J/psi pi^+/-)/BF(B^+/- --> J/psi K^+/-) to be [3.91 +/- 0.78 (stat.) +/- 0.19 (syst.)]%. The CP-violating charge asymmetries for the B^+/- --> J/psi pi^+/- and B^+/- --> J/psi K^+/- decays are determined to be A_pi = 0.01 +/- 0.22 (stat.) +/- 0.01 (syst.) and A_K = 0.003 +/- 0.030 (stat.) +/- 0.004 (syst.)

    Study of inclusive DS()+/D_S^{(*)+/-} production in B decays and measurement of B0DDS()+B^0 \to D^{*-}D_S^{(*)+} decays using a partial reconstruction technique

    Electron-positron annihilation data collected by the BABAR detector near the Y(4S) resonance are used to study the inclusive decay of B mesons to D_S^(+/-) and D_S^(*+/-) mesons, where the D_S^(+/-) is reconstructed using the decay D_S^(+/-) --> phi pi^(+/-). The production fraction of inclusive D_S^((*)+/-) and the corresponding momentum spectra have been determined. The exclusive decays B^0 --> D^(*-)D_S^((*)+) are observed with a partial reconstruction technique which uses the soft pion from the D^(*+/-) decay in association with the reconstructed D_S^((*)+/-). The beam energy constraint is used to determine the missing mass recoiling against the D_S^(+/-) system, showing a clear signal for this process. From the observed rates, preliminary results for the corresponding branching fractions have been obtained
