    Fine Selmer Groups and Isogeny Invariance

    We investigate fine Selmer groups for elliptic curves and for Galois representations over a number field. More specifically, we discuss Conjecture A, which states that the fine Selmer group of an elliptic curve over the cyclotomic extension is a finitely generated Zp\mathbb{Z}_p-module. The relationship between this conjecture and Iwasawa's classical μ=0\mu=0 conjecture is clarified. We also present some partial results towards the question whether Conjecture A is invariant under isogenies.Comment: 20 page

    Computational results for an automatically tuned CMA-ES with increasing population size on the CEC'05 benchmark set

    Abstract In this article, we apply an automatic algorithm configuration tool to improve the performance of the CMA-ES algorithm with increasing population size (iCMA-ES), the best performing algorithm on the CEC'05 benchmark set for continuous function optimization. In particular, we consider a separation between tuning and test sets and, thus, tune iCMA-ES on a different set of functions than the ones of the CEC'05 benchmark set. Our experimental results show that the tuned iCMA-ES improves significantly over the default version of iCMA-ES. Furthermore, we provide some further analyses on the impact of the modified parameter settings on iCMA-ES performance and a comparison with recent results of algorithms that use CMA-ES as a subordinate local search

    Mesoporous Co 3 O 4 as an electrocatalyst for water oxidation

    ABSTRACT Mesoporous Co 3 O 4 has been prepared using porous silica as a hard template via a nanocasting route and its electrocatalytic properties were investigated as an oxygen evolution catalyst for the electrolysis of water. The ordered mesostructured Co 3 O 4 shows dramatically increased catalytic activity compared to that of bulk Co 3 O 4 . Enhanced catalytic activity was achieved with high porosity and surface area, and the water oxidation overpotential (η) of the ordered mesoporous Co 3 O 4 decreases significantly as the surface area increases. The mesoporous Co 3 O 4 also shows excellent structural stability in alkaline media. After 100 min under 0.8 V (versus Ag/AgCl) applied bias, the sample maintains the ordered mesoporous structure with little deactivation of the catalytic properties

    A Diffusion-Based Approach to Geminate Recombination of Heme Proteins with Small Ligands

    A model of postphotodissociative monomolecular (geminate) recombination of heme proteins with small ligands (NO, O2 or CO) is represented. The non-exponential decay with time for the probability to find a heme in unbound state is interpreted in terms of diffusion-like migration of ligabs physics/0212040 and between protein cavities. The temporal behavior for the probability is obtained from numerical simulation and specified by two parameters: the time \tau_{reb} of heme-ligand rebinding for the ligand localized inside the heme pocket and the time \tau_{esc} of ligand escape from the pocket. The model is applied in the analysis of available experimental data for geminate reoxygenation of human hemoglobin HbA. Our simulation is in good agreement with the measurements. The analysis shows that the variation in pH of the solution (6.0<pH<9.4) results in considerable changes for \tau_{reb} from 0.36 ns (at pH=8.5) up to 0.5 ns (pH=6.0) but effects slightly on the time \tau_{esc} (\tau_{esc} ~ 0.88 ns).Comment: 8 pages with 4 figures, submitted to Chem.     Presentation of Integrins on Leukocyte Microvilli: A Role for the Extracellular Domain in Determining Membrane Localization

    Adhesion of blood leukocytes to the endothelium involves multiple steps including initial attachment (tethering), rolling, and firm arrest. Presentation of adhesion molecules on leukocyte microvilli can substantially enhance tethering. Localization of L-selectin to microvilli and of CD44 to the planar cell body have been shown to depend upon their transmembrane and cytoplasmic domains. We investigated the role of leukocyte integrin transmembrane and cytoplasmic domains in initiating adhesion under flow and in microvillous localization. Integrins α4β7, αLβ2, and αMβ2 were heterologously expressed in K562 cells. α4β7 initiated adhesion under flow and localized to microvilli, whereas β2 integrins did not initiate adhesion and localized to the cell body. Chimeric integrins were produced by replacing the α4β7 cytoplasmic and/or transmembrane domains with the homologous domains of αLβ2 or αMβ2. Unexpectedly, these chimeras efficiently mediated adhesion to the α4β7 ligand mucosal addressin cell adhesion molecule–1 under flow and localized to microvilli. Therefore, differences between the transmembrane and cytoplasmic domains of α4 and β2 integrins do not account for differences in ability to support attachment under flow or in membrane localization. Integrins α4β1, α5β1, α6Aβ1, αvβ3, and αEβ7 also localized to microvilli. Transmembrane proteins known or suspected to associate with extracellular domains of microvillous integrins, including tetraspans and CD47, were concentrated on microvilli as well. These findings suggest that interactions between the extracellular domains of integrins and associated proteins could direct the assembly of multimolecular complexes on leukocyte microvilli

    Conditional Vascular Cell Adhesion Molecule 1 Deletion in Mice: Impaired Lymphocyte Migration to Bone Marrow

    We generated vascular cell adhesion molecule (VCAM)-1 “knock-in” mice and Cre recombinase transgenic mice to delete the VCAM-1 gene (vcam-1) in whole mice, thereby overcoming the embryonic lethality seen with conventional vcam-1–deficient mice. vcam-1 knock-in mice expressed normal levels of VCAM-1 but showed loss of VCAM-1 on endothelial and hematopoietic cells when interbred with a “TIE2Cre” transgene. Analysis of peripheral blood from conditional vcam-1–deficient mice revealed mild leukocytosis, including elevated immature B cell numbers. Conversely, the bone marrow (BM) had reduced immature B cell numbers, but normal numbers of pro-B cells. vcam-1–deficient mice also had reduced mature IgD+ B and T cells in BM and a greatly reduced capacity to support short-term migration of transferred B cells, CD4+ T cells, CD8+ T cells, and preactivated CD4+ T cells to the BM.     Robust reduction of graphene fluoride using an electrostatically biased scanning probe

    ABSTRACT We report a novel and easily accessible method to chemically reduce graphene fluoride (GF) sheets with nanoscopic precision using high electrostatic fields generated between an atomic force microscope (AFM) tip and the GF substrate. Reduction of fluorine by the electric field produces graphene nanoribbons (GNR) with a width of 105-1,800 nm with sheet resistivity drastically decreased from &gt;1 TΩ·sq. -1 (GF) down to 46 kΩ·sq. -1 (GNR). Fluorine reduction also changes the topography, friction, and work function of the GF. Kelvin probe force microscopy measurements indicate that the work function of GF is 180-280 meV greater than that of graphene. The reduction process was optimized by varying the AFM probe velocity between 1.2 μm·s -1 and 12 μm·s -1 and the bias voltage applied to the sample between -8 and -12 V. The electrostatic field required to remove fluorine from carbon is ~1.6 V·nm -1 . Reduction of the fluorine may be due to the softening of the C-F bond in this intense field or to the accumulation and hydrolysis of adventitious water into a meniscus

    Development and evaluation of a cultural competency training curriculum

    BACKGROUND: Increasing the cultural competence of physicians and other health care providers has been suggested as one mechanism for reducing health disparities by improving the quality of care across racial/ethnic groups. While cultural competency training for physicians is increasingly promoted, relatively few studies evaluating the impact of training have been published. METHODS: We recruited 53 primary care physicians at 4 diverse practice sites and enrolled 429 of their patients with diabetes and/or hypertension. Patients completed a baseline survey which included a measure of physician culturally competent behaviors. Cultural competency training was then provided to physicians at 2 of the sites. At all 4 sites, physicians received feedback in the form of their aggregated cultural competency scores compared to the aggregated scores from other physicians in the practice. The primary outcome at 6 months was change in the Patient-Reported Physician Cultural Competence (PRPCC) score; secondary outcomes were changes in patient trust, satisfaction, weight, systolic blood pressure, and glycosylated hemoglobin. Multiple analysis of variance was used to control for differences patient characteristics and baseline levels of the outcome measure between groups. RESULTS: Patients had a mean of 2.8 + 2.2 visits to the study physician during the study period. Changes in all outcomes were similar in the "Training + Feedback" group compared to the "Feedback Only" group (PRPCC: 3.7 vs.1.8; trust: -0.7 vs. -0.2 ; satisfaction: 1.9 vs. 2.5; weight: -2.5 lbs vs. -0.7 lbs; systolic blood pressure: 1.7 mm Hg vs. 0.1 mm Hg; glycosylated hemoglobin 0.02% vs. 0.07%; p = NS for all). CONCLUSION: The lack of measurable impact of physician training on patient-reported and disease-specific outcomes in the current has several possible explanations, including the relatively limited nature of the intervention. We hope that the current study will help provide a basis for future studies, using more intensive interventions with different provider groups
