Continuum Double Exchange Model
We present a continuum model for doped manganites which consist of two
species of quantum spin 1/2 fermions interacting with classical spin fields.
The phase structure at zero temperature turns out to be considerably rich:
antiferromagnetic insulator, antiferromagnetic two band conducting, canted two
band conducting, canted one band conducting and ferromagnetic one band
conducting phases are identified, all of them being stable against phase
separation. There are also regions in the phase diagram where phase separation

Gamma photometric redshifts for long gamma-ray bursts
It is known that the soft tail of the gamma-ray bursts' spectra show excesses
from the exact power-law dependence. In this article we show that this
departure can be detected in the peak flux ratios of different BATSE DISCSC
energy channels. This effect allows to estimate the redshift of the bright long
gamma-ray bursts in the BATSE Catalog. A verification of these redshifts is
obtained for the 8 GRB which have both BATSE DISCSC data and measured optical
spectroscopic redshifts. There is good correlation between the measured and
esti redshifts, and the average error is . The method is
similar to the photometric redshift estimation of galaxies in the optical
range, hence it can be called as "gamma photometric redshift estimation". The
estimated redshifts for the long bright gamma-ray bursts are up to . For the the faint long bursts - which should be up to - the

Spin Waves in Canted Phases: An Application to Doped Manganites
We present the effective lagrangian for low energy and momentum spin waves in
canted phases at next to leading order in the derivative expansion. The
symmetry breaking pattern SU(2) --> 1 of the internal spin group and that of
the crystallographic space group imply that there is one ferromagnetic and one
antiferromagnetic spin wave. The interaction of the spin waves with the charge
carriers is also discussed for canted, ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic
phases. All this together allows us to write the doping dependence of the
dispersion relation parameters for doped manganites. We point out that the spin
waves posses distinctive characteristics which may allow us to experimentally

Challenging GRB models through the broadband dataset of GRB060908
Context: Multiwavelength observations of gamma-ray burst prompt and afterglow
emission are a key tool to disentangle the various possible emission processes
and scenarios proposed to interpret the complex gamma-ray burst phenomenology.
Aims: We collected a large dataset on GRB060908 in order to carry out a
comprehensive analysis of the prompt emission as well as the early and late
afterglow. Methods: Data from Swift-BAT, -XRT and -UVOT together with data from
a number of different ground-based optical/NIR and millimeter telescopes
allowed us to follow the afterglow evolution from about a minute from the
high-energy event down to the host galaxy limit. We discuss the physical
parameters required to model these emissions. Results: The prompt emission of
GRB060908 was characterized by two main periods of activity, spaced by a few
seconds of low intensity, with a tight correlation between activity and
spectral hardness. Observations of the afterglow began less than one minute
after the high-energy event, when it was already in a decaying phase, and it
was characterized by a rather flat optical/NIR spectrum which can be
interpreted as due to a hard energy-distribution of the emitting electrons. On
the other hand, the X-ray spectrum of the afterglow could be fit by a rather
soft electron distribution. Conclusions: GRB060908 is a good example of a
gamma-ray burst with a rich multi-wavelength set of observations. The
availability of this dataset, built thanks to the joint efforts of many
different teams, allowed us to carry out stringent tests for various
interpretative scenarios showing that a satisfactorily modeling of this event
is challenging. In the future, similar efforts will enable us to obtain
optical/NIR coverage comparable in quality and quantity to the X-ray data for
more events, therefore opening new avenues to progress gamma-ray burst

Current situation of endemic mycosis in the Americas and the Caribbean: Proceedings of the first international meeting on endemic mycoses of the Americas (IMEMA)
Background: The Americas are home to biologically and clinically diverse endemic fungi, including Blastomyces, Coccidioides, Emergomyces, Histoplasma, Paracoccidioides and Sporothrix. In endemic areas with high risk of infection, these fungal pathogens represent an important public health problem. Objectives: This report aims to summarise the main findings of the regional analysis carried out on the status of the endemic mycoses of the Americas, done at the first International Meeting on Endemic Mycoses of the Americas (IMEMA). Methods: A regional analysis for the Americas was done, the 27 territories were grouped into nine regions. A SWOT analysis was done. Results: All territories reported availability of microscopy. Seventy percent of territories reported antibody testing, 67% of territories reported availability of Histoplasma antigen testing. None of the territories reported the use of (1–3)-β-d-glucan. Fifty two percent of territories reported the availability of PCR testing in reference centres (mostly for histoplasmosis). Most of the territories reported access to medications such as trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, itraconazole, voriconazole and amphotericin B (AMB) deoxycholate. Many countries had limited access to liposomal formulation of AMB and newer azoles, such as posaconazole and isavuconazole. Surveillance of these fungal diseases was minimal. Conclusions: A consensus emerged among meeting participants, this group concluded that endemic mycoses are neglected diseases, and due to their severity and lack of resources, the improvement of diagnosis, treatment and surveillance is needed.Fil: Caceres, Diego H.. Evaluation of activated high volume fly ash systems using Na2SO4, lime and quicklime in mortars with high loss on ignition fly ashes
In general, concretes made with blended Portland cement containing high volumes of fly
ash provide an alternative to conventional Portland cement concrete to enable carbon
footprint reduction. This study evaluates the chemical activation of four fly ashes in blends
with Portland cement, by assessing their effects on hydration and compressive strength. In
this study, a sieving process is used to regulate the fly ash composition, which has an
effect in the chemistry and reaction of the mix. The results show the importance of the
amorphous content of the fly ash with respect to achieving a high compressive strength.
The effect of sodium sulfate, added as an activator, is significant in terms of compressive
strength at early age for two of the fly ashes studied; in this case, the parameter used to
correlate with the compressive strength evolution is the amount of portlandite consumed
through pozzolanic reactions. However, sodium sulfate does not have the same effect on
fly ashes with a high amount of Fe2O3, in which portlandite consumption is much lower
Comparative evaluation of methods for estimating retinal ganglion cell loss in retinal sections and wholemounts
To investigate the reliability of different methods of quantifying retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) in rat retinal sections and wholemounts from eyes with either intact optic nerves or those axotomised after optic nerve crush (ONC). Adult rats received a unilateral ONC and after 21 days the numbers of Brn3a+ , bIII-tubulin+ and Islet-1+ RGCs were quantified in either retinal radial sections or wholemounts in which FluoroGold (FG) was injected 48 h before harvesting. Phenotypic antibody markers were used to distinguish RGCs from astrocytes, macrophages/microglia and amacrine cells. In wholemounted retinae, counts of FG+ and Brn3a+ RGCs were of similar magnitude in eyes with intact optic nerves and were similarly reduced after ONC. Larger differences in RGC number were detected between intact and ONC groups when images were taken closer to the optic nerve head. In radial sections, Brn3a did not stain astrocytes, macrophages/microglia or amacrine cells, whereas βIII-tubulin and Islet-1 did localize to amacrine cells as well as RGCs. The numbers of βIII-tubulin+ RGCs was greater than Brn3a+ RGCs, both in retinae from eyes with intact optic nerves and eyes 21 days after ONC. Islet-1 staining also overestimated the number of RGCs compared to Brn3a, but only after ONC. Estimates of RGC loss were similar in Brn3astained radial retinal sections compared to both Brn3a-stained wholemounts and retinal wholemounts in which RGCs were backfilled with FG, with sections having the added advantage of reducing experimental animal usage
Coadministration of the Three Antigenic Leishmania infantum Poly (A) Binding Proteins as a DNA Vaccine Induces Protection against Leishmania major Infection in BALB/c Mice
Highly conserved intracellular proteins from Leishmania have been described as antigens in natural and experimental infected mammals. The present study aimed to evaluate the antigenicity and prophylactic properties of the Leishmania infantum Poly (A) binding proteins (LiPABPs). Three different members of the LiPABP family have been described. Recombinant tools based on these proteins were constructed: recombinant proteins and DNA vaccines. The three recombinant proteins were employed for coating ELISA plates. Sera from human and canine patients of visceral leishmaniasis and human patients of mucosal leishmaniasis recognized the three LiPABPs. In addition, the protective efficacy of a DNA vaccine based on the combination of the three Leishmania PABPs has been tested in a model of progressive murine leishmaniasis: BALB/c mice infected with Leishmania major. The induction of a Th1-like response against the LiPABP family by genetic vaccination was able to down-regulate the IL-10 predominant responses elicited by parasite LiPABPs after infection in this murine model. This modulation resulted in a partial protection against L. major infection. LiPABP vaccinated mice showed a reduction on the pathology that was accompanied by a decrease in parasite burdens, in antibody titers against Leishmania antigens and in the IL-4 and IL-10 parasite-specific mediated responses in comparison to control mice groups immunized with saline or with the non-recombinant plasmid. The results presented here demonstrate for the first time the prophylactic properties of a new family of Leishmania antigenic intracellular proteins, the LiPABPs. The redirection of the immune response elicited against the LiPABP family (from IL-10 towards IFN-γ mediated responses) by genetic vaccination was able to induce a partial protection against the development of the disease in a highly susceptible murine model of leishmaniasisThe study was supported in Spain by grants from Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación FIS

Diversity of HIV-1 Subtype B: Implications to the Origin of BF Recombinants
BACKGROUND: The HIV-1 subtype B epidemic in Brazil is peculiar because of the high frequency of isolates having the GWGR tetramer at V3 loop region. It has been suggested that GWGR is a distinct variant and less pathogenic than other subtype B isolates. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Ninety-four percent of the HIV-1 subtype B worldwide sequences (7689/8131) obtained from the Los Alamos HIV database contain proline at the tetramer of the V3 loop of the env gene (GPGR) and only 0.74% (60/8131) have tryptophan (GWGR). By contrast, 48.4% (161/333) of subtype B isolates from Brazil have proline, 30.6% (102/333) contain tryptophan and 10.5% (35/333) have phenylalanine (F) at the second position of the V3 loop tip. The proportion of tryptophan and phenylalanine in Brazilian isolates is much higher than in worldwide subtype B sequences (chi-square test, p = 0.0001). The combined proportion of proline, tryptophan and phenylalanine (GPGR+GWGR+GFGR) of Brazilian isolates corresponds to 89% of all amino acids in the V3 loop. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that almost all subtype B isolates in Brazil have a common origin regardless of their motif (GWGR, GPGR, GGGR, etc.) at the V3 tetramer. This shared ancestral origin was also observed in CRF28_BF and CRF29_BF in a genome region (free of recombination) derived from parental subtype B. These results imply that tryptophan substitution (e.g., GWGR-to-GxGR), which was previously associated with the change in the coreceptor usage within the host, also occurs at the population level. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Based on the current findings and previous study showing that tryptophan and phenylalanine in the V3 loop are related with coreceptor usage, we propose that tryptophan and phenylalanine in subtype B isolates in Brazil are kept by selective mechanisms due to the distinct coreceptor preferences in target cells of GWGR, GFGR and GFGR viruses
