Knowledge production and formation activity : a proposal for education
Abstract: This works deals with the development of a formative proposal involving educators on the production of a social knowledge relevant to their everyday activities. The formative proposal has its origins in the participatory actionresearch conducted during the nineteen seventies and is rooted in Vygostky's Marxist concept of knowledge and cognitive development. Instances of three different experiences are presented in which knowledge production is articulated through learning experiences: rural area school teachers, pedagogical coordinators from urban schools, and administrators from S. Paulo's public school system. The aim with this work is to contribute to the formation of new practices suitable for both instructors (lecturers) and learners inside and outside the classroom.DoutoradoPoliticas, Administração e Sistemas EducacionaisDoutor em Educaçã
Characterization of the knee joint phenotype in the Portuguese population
Background: Neutral constitutional alignment and neutral joint line obliquity has been the standard alignment strategy for total knee arthroplasty. This one-for-all measure may negatively impact gait pattern and knee biomechanics. Novel alignment strategies surged, considering the variability in phenotypes found across the literature, as different populations may present different phenotype distributions. The Portuguese population has a distinct genetic origin, with no phenotype distribution data. Our objective was to characterise the population’s knee morphology, searching and analysing adjacent joint osteoarthrosis, and calculating the pre-disease coronal alignment.
Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted. Full-length X-rays performed between 2016-2023 were analysed. Five alignment parameters were measured (LDFA, MPTA, JLCA, TJLA, HKA), and two parameters were calculated (aHKA, JLO). Knees were classified according to the CPAK classification.
Results: For the arthritic cohort, CPAK-I (23%) II (20%) were most common, aHKA increases as KL increases (r=0.8352; p<0.001). For the healthy, Type-II (42%) and Type-I (15%) were most common. For paediatric, Type-II (43%) and Type-V (21%) were most common. CPAK Types-VII/VIII/IX were rare. Differences between genders for healthy and arthritic cohorts were statistically significant. The arthritic had higher prevalence of adjacent joint osteoarthritis.
Conclusions: The Portuguese population presents a similar knee phenotype comparing with other populations, some differences have been found regarding the Asian continent. The most common phenotype was a neutral alignment if either healthy or paediatric, or a varus alignment if knee OA. Coronal alignment may not have a major impact in the prevalence of ankle and hip osteoarthritis; however, higher prevalence is observed in patients with knee OA
An overview of burst, buckling, durability and corrosion analysis of lightweight FRP composite pipes and their applicability
© 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. The main aim of this review article was to address the performance of filament wound fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) composite pipes and their critical properties, such as burst, buckling, durability and corrosion. The importance of process parameters concerning merits and demerits of the manufacturing methods was discussed for the better-quality performance. Burst analysis revealed that the winding angle of ±55° was observed to be optimum with minimum failure mechanisms, such as matrix cracking, whitening, leakage and fracture. The reduction of buckling effect was reported in case of lower hoop stress value in the hoop to axial stress ratio against axial, compression and torsion. A significant improvement in energy absorption was observed in the hybrid composite pipes with the effect of thermal treatment. However, the varying winding angle in FRP pipe fabrication was reported as an influencing factor affecting all the aforementioned properties. Almost 90% of the reviewed studies was done using E-glass/epoxy materials for the composite pipe production. By overcoming associated limitations, such as replacing synthetic materials, designing new material combinations and cost-benefit analysis, the production cost of the lightweight FRP composite pipes can be decreased for the real-time applications.Peer reviewe

A sonification experience to portray the sounds of portuguese consumption habits
Presented at the 25th International Conference on Auditory Display (ICAD 2019) 23-27 June 2019, Northumbria University, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK.The stimuli for consumption is present in everyday life, where major retail companies play a role in providing a large range of products every single day. Using sonification techniques, we present a listening experiment of Portuguese consumption habits in the course of ten days, gathered from a Portuguese retail company. We focused on how to represent this time-series data as a musical piece that would engage the listenerメs attention and promote an active listening attitude, exploring the influence of aesthetics in the perception of auditory displays. Through a phenomenological approach, ten participants were interviewed to gather perceptions evoked by the piece, and how the consumption variations were understood. The tested composition revealed relevant associations about the data, with the consumption context indirectly present throughout the emerging themes: from the idea of everyday life, routine and consumption peaks to aesthetic aspects as the passage of time, frenzy and consumerism. Documentary, movie imagery and soundtrack were also perceived. Several musical aspects were also mentioned, as the constant, steady rhythm and the repetitive nature of the composition, and sensations such as pleasantness, satisfaction, annoyance, boredom and anxiety. These collected topics convey the incessant feeling and consumption needs which portray our present society, offering new paths for comprehending musical sound perception and consequent exploration
