    Measurement of the prompt J/psi and psi(2S) polarizations in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV

    The polarizations of prompt J/psi and psi(2S) mesons are measured in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV, using a dimuon data sample collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.9 inverse femtobarns. The prompt J/psi and psi(2S) polarization parameters lambda[theta], lambda[phi], and lambda[theta, phi], as well as the frame-invariant quantity lambda(tilde), are measured from the dimuon decay angular distributions in three different polarization frames. The J/psi results are obtained in the transverse momentum range 14 < pt < 70 GeV, in the rapidity intervals abs(y) < 0.6 and 0.6 < abs(y) < 1.2. The corresponding psi(2S) results cover 14 < pt < 50 GeV and include a third rapidity bin, 1.2 < abs(y) < 1.5. No evidence of large transverse or longitudinal polarizations is seen in these kinematic regions, which extend much beyond those previously explored

    In het aansprakelijkheidsrecht heeft een benadeelde in beginsel recht op volledige vergoeding van zijn schade. De gevolgen van de schadetoebrengende gebeurtenis dienen zoveel als mogelijk te worden weggenomen of te worden gecompenseerd. Daarbij wordt gekeken naar de situatie waarin de benadeelde zou hebben verkeerd indien de schadetoebrengende gebeurtenis niet zou hebben plaatsgevonden. Dat is bij overlijden per definitie problematisch. Er is iemand weggevallen, wat vele gevolgen heeft. De schade als gevolg van het overlijden komt maar beperkt voor vergoeding in aanmerking. In artikel 6:108 BW is een drietal beperkingen te vinden. Het gaat hier om beperkingen ten aanzien van de aard van de schade, de kring van gerechtigden en de omvang van de schade. Daarbij hinkt het recht op schadevergoeding bij overlijden op twee gedachten. Aan de ene kant is er het aansprakelijkheidsrecht, maar de geleden schade komt niet volledig voor vergoeding in aanmerking. Aan de andere kant is er het recht op alimentatie uit het familierecht, maar dat wordt bij overlijden niet consequent toegepast. De motieven voor de beperkingen van het recht op schadevergoeding zijn achterhaald en niet (langer) overtuigend. Het recht is niet bij de tijd, het sluit niet aan bij de maatschappelijke ontwikkelingen. De beperkingen die het recht op schadevergoeding bij overlijden in de huidige samenleving met zich meebrengt zorgen voor complexe methoden om de nabestaanden tegemoet te komen en oogsten daardoor veel kritiek. The precise alignment of this complex device is a formidable challenge, and only achievable with a significant extension of the technologies routinely used for tracking detectors in the past. This article describes the full-scale alignment procedure as it is used during LHC operations. Among the specific features of the method are the simultaneous determination of up to 200 000 alignment parameters with tracks, the measurement of individual sensor curvature parameters, the control of systematic misalignment effects, and the implementation of the whole procedure in a multi-processor environment for high execution speed. Overall, the achieved statistical accuracy on the module alignment is found to be significantly better than 10μm

    Measurement of higher-order harmonic azimuthal anisotropy in PbPb collisions at root s(NN)=2.76 TeV

Expressed in terms of the Fourier components of the azimuthal distribution, the n=3–6 harmonic coefficients are presented for charged particles as a function of their transverse momentum (0.3<pT<8.0GeV/c), collision centrality (0%–70%), and pseudorapidity (|η|<2.0). The data are analyzed using the event plane, multiparticle cumulant, and Lee-Yang zeros methods, which provide different sensitivities to initial-state fluctuations.     Hormonal control of spermatogenesis: expression of FSJH receptor and androgen receptor genes

    FSH and testosterone are the main hormonal regulators of spermatogenesis. The actions of androgens and FSH are mediated by their respective receptors. Receptor gene expression (mRNA and protein). is an important determinant of hormone action. Biochemical aspects of the regulation of androgen and FSH receptor gene expression in the testis were chosen as the subject of the studies described in this thesis. Regulation of the expression of the receptor genes was studied at the level of gene transcription, and at the level of mRNA and protein expression. In Chapters 2-4, a detailed characterization is given of the effects of FSH on androgen and FSH receptor mRNA and protein expression in cultured immature Sertoli cells. For the androgen receptor, these findings were extended by measurements of androgen receptor gene transcription initiation rate in cultured immature Sertoli cells and LNCaP Oymph node carcinoma of the prostate) cells (Chapter 5). Preliminary results concerning a putative paracrine factor, produced by Sertoli cells and affecting androgen receptor mRNA expression in peritubular myoid cells, are presented in Chapter 6. The effects of testosterone deprivation iD. vivo on androgen receptor mRNA and protein expression in the adult rat testis were examined as described in Chapter 7.ffi vitro effects of testosterone on androgen receptor gene expression in cultured testicular cells and LNCaP cells are described in the Chapters 2, 3 and 5. In the General Discussion (Chapter 8) we have considered some aspects of regulation of spermatogenesis by FSH and testosterone and have discussed them in relation to our experimental data as well as in a broader perspective. This way, we hope that the results which we have presented, and discussions which we have tried to initiate, may contribute to research concerning hormonal control of spermatogenesis, now and in the futur

    Study of exclusive two-photon production of W+W- in pp collisions at √s=7 TeV and constraints on anomalous quartic gauge couplings

    A search for exclusive or quasi-exclusive W+W- production by photon-photon interactions, pp -> p(*)W(+)W(-)p(*), at \/s = 7 TeV is reported using data collected by the CMS detector with an integrated luminosity of 5.05 fb(-1). Events are selected by requiring a mu(+/-)mu(-/+) vertex with no additional associated charged tracks and dilepton transverse momentum p(T)(mu(+/-)mu(-/+)) > 30 GeV. Two events passing all selection requirements are observed in the data, compared to a standard model expectation of 2.2 +/- 0.4 signal events with 0.84 +/- 0.15 background. The tail of the dilepton p(T) distribution is studied for deviations from the standard model. No events are observed with p(T) > 100 GeV. Model-independent upper limits are computed and compared to predictions involving anomalous quartic gauge couplings. The limits on the parameters a(0,c)(W)/A(2) with a dipole form factor and an energy cutoff A(cutoff) = 500 GeV are of the order of 10(-4)

    The paper is concerned with the problem of testing a linear hypothesis about regression function. We propose a new testing procedure based on the Haar transform which is adaptive to unknown smoothness properties of the underlying function. The results show rate optimality of this procedure under mild conditions on the model.     Search for top-quark partners with charge 5/3 in the same-sign dilepton final state

    PubMed ID: 24836237A search for the production of heavy partners of the top quark with charge 5/3 is performed in events with a pair of same-sign leptons. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 19.5fb-1 and was collected at s=8TeV by the CMS experiment. No significant excess is observed in the data above the expected background, and the existence of top-quark partners with masses below 800 GeV is excluded at a 95% confidence level, assuming they decay exclusively to tW. This is the first limit on these particles from the LHC, and it is significantly more restrictive than previous limits. © 2014 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration
