Electrostatic charging artefacts in Lorentz electron tomography of MFM tip stray fields
Using the technique of differential phase contrast (DPC) Lorentz electron microscopy, the magnetic stray field distribution from magnetic force microscopy (MFM) tips can be calculated in a plane in front of the tip using tomographic reconstruction techniques. Electrostatic charging of the tip during DPC imaging can significantly distort these field reconstructions. Using a simple point charge model, this paper illustrates the effect of electrostatic charging of the sample on the accuracy of tomographic field reconstructions. A procedure for separating electrostatic and magnetic effects is described, and is demonstrated using experimental tomographic data obtained from a modified MFM tip
Preventing pain on injection of propofol: A comparison between lignocaine pre-treatment and lignocaine added to propofol
Publisher's copy made available with the permission of the publisherA randomized double-blind study compared two methods of preventing the pain from injection of propofol, lignocaine pre-treatment followed by propofol and lignocaine added to propofol. One hundred patients received a 4 ml solution intravenously with a venous tourniquet for 1 minute, followed by propofol mixed with 2 ml of solution. Patients were divided into two treatment groups of 50 patients each: 4 ml 1% lignocaine pre-treatment followed by propofol and 2 ml saline, or 4 ml saline followed by propofol and 2 ml 2% lignocaine. Pain was assessed with a 100 mm visual analogue scale after induction and in recovery. The incidence of injection pain was 8% in the propofol mixed with lignocaine group, and 28% in the lignocaine pre-treatment group. This difference is statistically significant (P=0.017). For those patients who had pain, the mean pain score was 26.5 on induction for the propofol with lignocaine group (n=4), while the mean score was 44.4 for the pre-treatment group (n=13). The difference was not statistically significant (P=0.25). None of the propofol mixed with lignocaine group recalled pain, while 13 of the pre-treatment group did so. Lignocaine pre-treatment does not improve the immediate or the recalled comfort of patients during propofol induction when compared to lignocaine added to propofol. Simulations of Oligomeric Intermediates in Prion Diseases
We extend our previous stochastic cellular automata based model for areal
aggregation of prion proteins on neuronal surfaces. The new anisotropic model
allow us to simulate both strong beta-sheet and weaker attachment bonds between
proteins. Constraining binding directions allows us to generate aggregate
structures with the hexagonal lattice symmetry found in recently observed in
vitro experiments. We argue that these constraints on rules may correspond to
underlying steric constraints on the aggregation process. We find that monomer
dominated growth of the areal aggregate is too slow to account for some
observed doubling time-to-incubation time ratios inferred from data, and so
consider aggregation dominated by relatively stable but non-infectious
oligomeric intermediates. We compare a kinetic theory analysis of oligomeric
aggregation to spatially explicit simulations of the process. We find that with
suitable rules for misfolding of oligomers, possibly due to water exclusion by
the surrounding aggregate, the resulting oligomeric aggregation model maps onto
our previous monomer aggregation model. Therefore it can produce some of the
same attractive features for the description of prion incubation time data. We

Crop diversification and parasitic weed abundance: a global meta-analysis
Parasitic weeds cause huge annual losses to food production globally. A small number of species from the genera Cuscuta, Orobanche, Phelipanche and Striga have proliferated across many agroecological zones. Their control is compromised due to the lack of efficacy of conventional herbicides and their rapid adaptation to new resistant crop cultivars. A broad range of studies suggest consistent reductions in parasitic weed densities owing to increased spatial (intercropping) and temporal diversity (crop rotation). However, to date, no synthesis of this body of research has been published. Here we report the results of a meta-analysis using 1525 paired observations from 67 studies across 24 countries, comparing parasitic weed density and crop yields from monocrop and more diverse cropping systems. We found both spatial and temporal crop diversification had a significant effect on parasitic weed density reduction. Furthermore, our results show effects of spatial diversification are stronger in suppressing parasitic weeds than temporal effects. Furthermore, the analysis indicates intercrops which alter both microclimate and soil chemistry (e.g. Crotalaria, Stylosanthes, Berseem clover and Desmodium) are most effective in parasitic weed management. This analysis serves to underline the viability of crop diversification as a tool to enhance food security globally
Two-dimensional Packing in Prolate Granular Materials
We investigate the two-dimensional packing of extremely prolate (aspect ratio
) granular materials, comparing experiments with Monte-Carlo
simulations. The average packing fraction of particles with aspect ratio
is . We quantify the orientational correlation of
particles and find a correlation length of two particle lengths. The functional
form of the decay of orientational correlation is the same in both experiments
and simulations spanning three orders of magnitude in aspect ratio. This
function decays over a distance of two particle lengths. It is possible to
identify voids in the pile with sizes ranging over two orders of magnitude. The
experimental void distribution function is a power law with exponent
. Void distributions in simulated piles do not decay as a
power law, but do show a broad tail. We extend the simulation to investigate
the scaling at very large aspect ratios. A geometric argument predicts the pile
number density to scale as . Simulations do indeed scale this way,
but particle alignment complicates the picture, and the actual number densities

Comments on multiple scattering of high-energy muons in thick layers
We describe two independent methods to calculate the angular distribution of
muons after traversing a thick scatterer due to multiple Coulomb scattering.
Both methods take into account the nuclear size effect. We demonstrate a
necessity to account for the nucleus extension as well as incoherent scattering
on atomic electrons to describe the muon scattering at large angles in thick
matter layers. The results of the two methods of calculations are in good

Economic crisis and the construction of a neo-liberal regulatory regime in Korea
A consistent theme of the literature on the ontology of the 1997 South Korean crisis is the key role played by regulatory failures and the growing weakness of the state. This paper seeks to briefly highlight both the insights and the limitations of this approach to understanding the crisis. Having done so, we shall set out the argument that the crisis created an opportunity for reformist Korean élites to advance their longstanding, but previously frustrated, project to create a comprehensive unambiguously neo-liberal regulatory regime. This paper will also seek to highlight the implications of our reading of the development of the Korean political economy for broader debates on economic liberalisation, crisis and the future of the developmental state
Unwrapping Closed Timelike Curves
Closed timelike curves (CTCs) appear in many solutions of the Einstein
equation, even with reasonable matter sources. These solutions appear to
violate causality and so are considered problematic. Since CTCs reflect the
global properties of a spacetime, one can attempt to change its topology,
without changing its geometry, in such a way that the former CTCs are no longer
closed in the new spacetime. This procedure is informally known as unwrapping.
However, changes in global identifications tend to lead to local effects, and
unwrapping is no exception, as it introduces a special kind of singularity,
called quasi-regular. This "unwrapping" singularity is similar to the string
singularities. We give two examples of unwrapping of essentially 2+1
dimensional spacetimes with CTCs, the Gott spacetime and the Godel universe. We
show that the unwrapped Gott spacetime, while singular, is at least devoid of
CTCs. In contrast, the unwrapped Godel spacetime still contains CTCs through
every point. A "multiple unwrapping" procedure is devised to remove the
remaining circular CTCs. We conclude that, based on the two spacetimes we
investigated, CTCs appearing in the solutions of the Einstein equation are not
simply a mathematical artifact of coordinate identifications, but are indeed a
necessary consequence of General Relativity, provided only that we demand these
solutions do not possess naked quasi-regular singularities.Comment: 29 pages, 9 figure
“Getting into it”:People with intellectual disabilities’ experiences and views of Behavioural Activation and Guided Self-Help for depression
Background: No studies have explored the acceptability of Behavioural Activation and Guided Self-Help interventions for depression with people who have intellectual disabilities. Method: Twenty-five participants were purposively sampled from participants taking part in a trial comparing Behavioural Activation with a Guided Self-Help intervention. A framework analysis was used to analyse interviews covering participants’ expectations and views of therapy. Results: Participants were largely positive about both interventions. However, they identified specific aspects of each intervention which they had found helpful. All participants valued the therapeutic relationship. The participants also had a number of criticisms and suggestions for improving the therapies. A common concern was the time-limited nature of the interventions and a wish for longer-term help. Overall, both sets of participants felt the interventions had relevance for their wider lives. Conclusions: The participants reported having positive engagement with the therapies but expressed a wish for longer-term supportive relationships
