    Use of plasma DNA to predict mortality and need for intensive care in patients with abdominal pain

    Background We investigated the value of plasma deoxyribonucleic acid concentrations in patients presenting with acute abdominal pain to predict need for intensive care or mortality. Methods Plasma deoxyribonucleic acid taken from patients with acute abdominal pain was analyzed for the ÎČ-globin gene using the quantitative polymerase chain reaction. The primary outcome measure was the combined 28-day mortality or admission to the intensive care unit. Results Of 287 consecutive patients with acute abdominal pain recruited, 12 patients were admitted to the intensive care unit and/or died. Median plasma DNA concentrations were higher in patients with cancer and major organ inflammation. Mean plasma DNA concentrations were three-fold higher in patients with systemic inflammatory response syndrome, five-fold higher in patients who died within 28 days, and eight-fold higher in patients admitted to the intensive care unit. The area under the receiver operator curve for plasma DNA concentrations and intensive care unit admission/mortality was 0.804. At a cut-off of 1100 GE/ml, the sensitivity was 67% (95%CI 35–90) and specificity was 89% (95%CI 84–92). At a cut-off of 175 GE/ml, the sensitivity was 100% (95%CI 73–100) and specificity was 30% (95%CI 25–36). Plasma DNA concentration predicted need for intensive care unit admission or death (adjusted odds ratio 1.4; P < 0.0001). Conclusions Plasma DNA may have a role in patients with acute abdominal pain as a marker for inflammation and cancer, and a predictor of intensive care unit admission/mortality

    Measurement of the Bs Lifetime in Fully and Partially Reconstructed Bs -> Ds- (phi pi-)X Decays in pbar-p Collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV

    We present a measurement of the Bs lifetime in fully and partially reconstructed Bs -> Ds(phi pi)X decays in 1.3 fb-1 of pbar-p collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV collected by the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. We measure tau(Bs) = 1.518 +/- 0.041 (stat.) +/- 0.027 (syst.) ps. The ratio of this result and the world average B0 lifetime yields tau(Bs)/tau(B0) = 0.99 +/-0.03, which is in agreement with recent theoretical predictions.Comment: submitted to Phys. Rev. Let

    Observation of the Y(4140)Y(4140) structure in the J/ψ ϕJ/\psi\,\phi Mass Spectrum in B±→J/ψ ϕKB^\pm\to J/\psi\,\phi K cays

    The observation of the Y(4140)Y(4140) structure in B±→J/ψ ϕK±B^\pm\rightarrow J/\psi\,\phi K^\pm decays produced in pˉp\bar{p} p collisions at \sqrt{s}=1.96~\TeV is reported with a statistical significance greater than 5 standard deviations. A fit to the J/ψ ϕJ/\psi\,\phi mass spectrum is performed assuming the presence of a Breit-Wigner resonance. The fit yields a signal of 19−5+619^{+6}_{-5} resonance events, and resonance mass and width of 4143.4^{+2.9}_{-3.0}(\mathrm{stat})\pm0.6(\mathrm{syst})~\MeVcc and 15.3^{+10.4}_{-6.1}(\mathrm{stat})\pm2.5(\mathrm{syst})~\MeVcc respectively. The parameters of this resonance-like structure are consistent with values reported from an earlier CDF analysis.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, submited to Phys. Rev. Let

    Risk profiles and one-year outcomes of patients with newly diagnosed atrial fibrillation in India: Insights from the GARFIELD-AF Registry.

    BACKGROUND: The Global Anticoagulant Registry in the FIELD-Atrial Fibrillation (GARFIELD-AF) is an ongoing prospective noninterventional registry, which is providing important information on the baseline characteristics, treatment patterns, and 1-year outcomes in patients with newly diagnosed non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF). This report describes data from Indian patients recruited in this registry. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 52,014 patients with newly diagnosed AF were enrolled globally; of these, 1388 patients were recruited from 26 sites within India (2012-2016). In India, the mean age was 65.8 years at diagnosis of NVAF. Hypertension was the most prevalent risk factor for AF, present in 68.5% of patients from India and in 76.3% of patients globally (P < 0.001). Diabetes and coronary artery disease (CAD) were prevalent in 36.2% and 28.1% of patients as compared with global prevalence of 22.2% and 21.6%, respectively (P < 0.001 for both). Antiplatelet therapy was the most common antithrombotic treatment in India. With increasing stroke risk, however, patients were more likely to receive oral anticoagulant therapy [mainly vitamin K antagonist (VKA)], but average international normalized ratio (INR) was lower among Indian patients [median INR value 1.6 (interquartile range {IQR}: 1.3-2.3) versus 2.3 (IQR 1.8-2.8) (P < 0.001)]. Compared with other countries, patients from India had markedly higher rates of all-cause mortality [7.68 per 100 person-years (95% confidence interval 6.32-9.35) vs 4.34 (4.16-4.53), P < 0.0001], while rates of stroke/systemic embolism and major bleeding were lower after 1 year of follow-up. CONCLUSION: Compared to previously published registries from India, the GARFIELD-AF registry describes clinical profiles and outcomes in Indian patients with AF of a different etiology. The registry data show that compared to the rest of the world, Indian AF patients are younger in age and have more diabetes and CAD. Patients with a higher stroke risk are more likely to receive anticoagulation therapy with VKA but are underdosed compared with the global average in the GARFIELD-AF.     Application of elasto-magnetic based stress sensors for measurements of cable tension force in cable-stayed bridge

    Recently, a novel stress sensor, which utilizes the elasto-magnetic (EM) effect of ferromagnetic materials, has been developed to measure stress in steel cables and wires. In this study, the effectiveness of this EM based stress sensors for monitoring of the cable tension force of a real scale cable-stayed bridge is investigated. The reference forces were used to calibrate and validate cable tension force measurements from the EM sensors. Tension force variations of two test cables during the second tensioning work on Hwa- Myung Bridge were monitored using the EM sensors

    No evidence exists concerning the association between blood pressure and ambient particles with aerodynamic diameter &lt;= 1.0 mu m (PM1), a major component of PM2.5 (&lt;= 2.5 mu m) particles, and potentially causing more hazardous health effects than PM2.5. We aimed to examine the associations of blood pressure in adults with both PM1 and PM2.5 in China. In 2009, we randomly selected 24,845 participants aged 18-74 years from 33 communities in China. Using a standardized mercuric-column sphygmomanometer, we measured blood pressure. Long-term exposure (2006-08) to PM1 and PM2.5 were estimated using a spatial statistical model. Generalized linear mixed models were used to evaluate the associations between air pollutants and blood pressure and hypertension prevalence, controlling for multiple covariates. A 10-mu g/m(3) increase in PM1 was significantly associated with an increase of 0.57 (95% CI 0.31-0.83) mmHg in systolic blood pressure (SBP), 0.19 (95% CI 0.03-0.35) mmHg increase in diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and a 5% (OR = 1.05; 95% CI 1.01-1.10) increase in odds for hypertension. Similar associations were detected for PM2.5. Furthermore, PM1-2.5 showed no association with blood pressure or hypertension. In summary, both PM1 and PM2.5 exposures were associated with elevated blood pressure levels and hypertension prevalence in Chinese adults. In addition, most of the pro-hypertensive effects of PM2.5 may come from PM1. Further longitudinal designed studies are warranted to validate our findings
