    This book provides for the first time a Europe-wide overview on the state of the art of management of recreation and nature tourism in forests. It describes the current situation and conflicts in the different regions of Europe and provides solutions illustrated by good practise examples. It addresses traditions, differences and similarities in European forests as well as new tasks, goals and strategies. The final discussion provides a profound insight into future trends regarding forest recreation and nature based tourism. The Mediterranean countries participating in the COST Action E33 are: Cyprus, Greece, Croatia, Portugal, Italy, Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina (Fig. 5.1). Geographically, these countries are distributed from the eastern Mediterranean area to the coasts of the Atlantic Ocean. Parts of France, which is treated as one of the central European countries has also parts with Mediterranean character and similar features to the other countries discussed in this chapter.     Napretkom industrije smrti, sredstva za ubijanje poprimila su sve sofisciraniji oblik i mehanizam djelovanja. U vrijeme ratnih operacija u sjeveroistočnoj Slavoniji upotrebljavana su različita oružja. Među njima vrlo zanimljivo mjesto zauzima protupješadijska mina antimagnetska br. 2 (slika 1) punjena sa 70 gr uprešanog trotila, s trenutnim upaljačem koji se aktivira na nagaz od 3 do 15 kg (popularno zvana »pašteta«). S obzirom na konfiguraciju tla, minsko polje je jedan od vrlo rasprostranjenih načina ratovanja. U godinu dana ratnih operacija, na naš Odjel primljeno je pet ranjenika stradalih od nagazne protupješadijske mine ovoga tipa. U ovom izvješču prikazujemo naš kirurški pristup liječenju takvih ozljeda.With the improvement of industry of death, killing devices became more sophisticated in shape and effect. During the war operations in north-eastern region of Slavonia various weapons have been used. Among them very interesting is antipersonnel mine (tread) No 2 filled with 70 gr of pressed throtyl, with instant lighter which is activated on tread of 3 to 15 kg (»cupcake«). The minefields are one of the most widespread ways of war strategic due to shape of the landscape. During a one year time of war activities, five wounded injured by such anti-personnel mines were admitted to the hospital. In this paper our operative strategy in management of such wounds is reviewed. Two of them underwent a secondary closure of the wound with free flap. It was the first time that free microvascular flap was performed in our Hospital even in spite of the fact that the hospital was bombed heavily meanwhile

    DHA supplementation during pregnancy does not reduce BMI or body fat mass in children: follow-up of the DHA to Optimize Mother Infant Outcome randomized controlled trial

    First published March 30, 2016The omega-3 (n-3) long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid (LCPUFA) docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) has proven effective at reducing fat storage in animal studies. However, a systematic review of human trials showed a lack of quality data to support or refute this hypothesis.We sought to determine whether maternal DHA supplementation during the second half of pregnancy results in a lower body mass index (BMI) and percentage of body fat in children.We conducted a follow-up at 3 and 5 y of age of children who were born to mothers enrolled in the DOMInO (DHA to Optimize Mother Infant Outcome) double-blind, randomized controlled trial, in which women with a singleton pregnancy were provided with DHA-rich fish-oil capsules (800 mg DHA/d) or vegetable-oil capsules (control group) in the second half of pregnancy. Primary outcomes were the BMIzscore and percentage of body fat at 3 and 5 y of age. Potential interactions between prenatal DHA and the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ (PPARγ) genotype as a measure of the genetic predisposition to obesity were investigated.A total of 1614 children were eligible for the follow-up. Parent or caregiver consent was obtained for 1531 children (95%), and these children were included in the analysis. BMIzscores and percentages of body fat of children in the DHA group did not differ from those of children in the control group at either 3 y of age [BMIzscore adjusted mean difference: 0.03 (95% CI: -0.07, 0.13;P= 0.61); percentage of body fat adjusted mean difference: -0.26 (95% CI: -0.99, 0.46;P= 0.47)] or 5 y of age [BMIzscore adjusted mean difference: 0.02 (95% CI: -0.08, 0.12;P= 0.66); percentage of body fat adjusted mean difference: 0.11 (95% CI: -0.60, 0.82;P= 0.75)]. No treatment effects were modified by thePPARγgenotype of the child.Independent of a genetic predisposition to obesity, maternal intake of DHA-rich fish oil during the second half of pregnancy does not affect the growth or body composition of children at 3 or 5 y of age.     New genetic loci link adipose and insulin biology to body fat distribution.

    Body fat distribution is a heritable trait and a well-established predictor of adverse metabolic outcomes, independent of overall adiposity. To increase our understanding of the genetic basis of body fat distribution and its molecular links to cardiometabolic traits, here we conduct genome-wide association meta-analyses of traits related to waist and hip circumferences in up to 224,459 individuals. We identify 49 loci (33 new) associated with waist-to-hip ratio adjusted for body mass index (BMI), and an additional 19 loci newly associated with related waist and hip circumference measures (P < 5 × 10(-8)). In total, 20 of the 49 waist-to-hip ratio adjusted for BMI loci show significant sexual dimorphism, 19 of which display a stronger effect in women. The identified loci were enriched for genes expressed in adipose tissue and for putative regulatory elements in adipocytes. Pathway analyses implicated adipogenesis, angiogenesis, transcriptional regulation and insulin resistance as processes affecting fat distribution, providing insight into potential pathophysiological mechanisms

    Large Deletions at the SHOX Locus in the Pseudoautosomal Region Are Associated with Skeletal Atavism in Shetland Ponies

    Skeletal atavism in Shetland ponies is a heritable disorder characterized by abnormal growth of the ulna and fibula that extend the carpal and tarsal joints, respectively. This causes abnormal skeletal structure and impaired movements, and affected foals are usually killed. In order to identify the causal mutation we subjected six confirmed Swedish cases and a DNA pool consisting of 21 control individuals to whole genome resequencing. We screened for polymorphisms where the cases and the control pool were fixed for opposite alleles and observed this signature for only 25 SNPs, most of which were scattered on genome assembly unassigned scaffolds. Read depth analysis at these loci revealed homozygosity or compound heterozygosity for two partially overlapping large deletions in the pseudoautosomal region (PAR) of chromosome X/Y in cases but not in the control pool. One of these deletions removes the entire coding region of the SHOX gene and both deletions remove parts of the CRLF2 gene located downstream of SHOX. The horse reference assembly of the PAR is highly fragmented, and in order to characterize this region we sequenced bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) clones by single-molecule real-time (SMRT) sequencing technology. This considerably improved the assembly and enabled size estimations of the two deletions to 1602180 kb and 60280 kb, respectively. Complete association between the presence of these deletions and disease status was verified in eight other affected horses. The result of the present study is consistent with previous studies in humans showing crucial importance of SHOX for normal skeletal development
