An analysis of the dynamics of development of significant strands within the Indian nationalist movement prior to World War I
Stellar Kinematics of the Double Nucleus of M31
We report observations of the double nucleus of M31 with the f/48 long-slit
spectrograph of the HST Faint Object Camera. We obtain a total exposure of
19,000 sec. over 7 orbits, with the 0.063-arcsec-wide slit along the line
between the two brightness peaks (PA 42). A spectrum of Jupiter is used as a
spectral template. The rotation curve is resolved, and reaches a maximum
amplitude of ~250 km/s roughly 0.3 arcsec either side of a rotation center
lying between P1 and P2, 0.16 +/- 0.05 arcsec from the optically fainter P2. We
find the velocity dispersion to be < 250 km/s everywhere except for a narrow
``dispersion spike'', centered 0.06 +/- 0.03 arcsec on the anti-P1 side of P2,
in which sigma peaks at 440 +/- 70 km/s. At much lower confidence, we see local
disturbances to the rotation curve at P1 and P2, and an elevation in sigma at
P1. At very low significance we detect a weak asymmetry in the line-of-sight
velocity distribution opposite to the sense usually encountered. Convolving our
V and sigma profiles to CFHT resolution, we find good agreement with the
results of Kormendy & Bender (1998, preprint), though there is a 20%
discrepancy in the dispersion that cannot be attributed to the dispersion
spike. Our results are not consistent with the location of the maximum
dispersion as found by Bacon et al. We find that the sinking star cluster model
of Emsellem & Combes (1997) does not reproduce either the rotation curve or the
dispersion profile. The eccentric disk model of Tremaine (1995) fares better,
and can be improved somewhat by adjusting the original parameters. However,
detailed modeling will require dynamical models of significantly greater

A detailed analysis of the HD 73526 2:1 resonant planetary system
We present six years of new radial velocity data from the Anglo-Australian and Magellan Telescopes on the HD 73526 2:1 resonant planetary system. We investigate both Keplerian and dynamical ( interacting) fits to these data, yielding four possible configurations for the system. The new data now show that both resonance angles are librating, with amplitudes of 40 degrees and 60 degrees, respectively. We then perform long-term dynamical stability tests to differentiate these solutions, which only differ significantly in the masses of the planets. We show that while there is no clearly preferred system inclination, the dynamical fit with i = 90 degrees provides the best combination of goodness-of-fit and long-term dynamical stability.Peer reviewe
TOI-150: A transiting hot Jupiter in the TESS southern CVZ
We report the detection of a hot Jupiter ($M_{p}=1.75_{-0.17}^{+0.14}\
M_{J}R_{p}=1.38\pm0.04\ R_{J}\log
g=4.152^{+0.030}_{-0.043}\beta=-79.59^{\circ}$). We confirm the
planetary nature of the candidate TOI-150.01 using radial velocity observations
from the APOGEE-2 South spectrograph and the Carnegie Planet Finder
Spectrograph, ground-based photometric observations from the robotic
Three-hundred MilliMeter Telescope at Las Campanas Observatory, and Gaia
distance estimates. Large-scale spectroscopic surveys, such as APOGEE/APOGEE-2,
now have sufficient radial velocity precision to directly confirm the signature
of giant exoplanets, making such data sets valuable tools in the TESS era.
Continual monitoring of TOI-150 by TESS can reveal additional planets and
subsequent observations can provide insights into planetary system
architectures involving a hot Jupiter around a star about halfway through its

Prevotella copri and microbiota members mediate the beneficial effects of a therapeutic food for malnutrition
Microbiota-directed complementary food (MDCF) formulations have been designed to repair the gut communities of malnourished children. A randomized controlled trial demonstrated that one formulation, MDCF-2, improved weight gain in malnourished Bangladeshi children compared to a more calorically dense standard nutritional intervention. Metagenome-assembled genomes from study participants revealed a correlation between ponderal growth and expression of MDCF-2 glycan utilization pathways by Prevotella copri strains. To test this correlation, here we use gnotobiotic mice colonized with defined consortia of age- and ponderal growth-associated gut bacterial strains, with or without P. copri isolates closely matching the metagenome-assembled genomes. Combining gut metagenomics and metatranscriptomics with host single-nucleus RNA sequencing and gut metabolomic analyses, we identify a key role of P. copri in metabolizing MDCF-2 glycans and uncover its interactions with other microbes including Bifidobacterium infantis. P. copri-containing consortia mediated weight gain and modulated energy metabolism within intestinal epithelial cells. Our results reveal structure-function relationships between MDCF-2 and members of the gut microbiota of malnourished children with potential implications for future therapies
The Fourteenth Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey: First Spectroscopic Data from the extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey and from the second phase of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment
The fourth generation of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-IV) has been in
operation since July 2014. This paper describes the second data release from
this phase, and the fourteenth from SDSS overall (making this, Data Release
Fourteen or DR14). This release makes public data taken by SDSS-IV in its first
two years of operation (July 2014-2016). Like all previous SDSS releases, DR14
is cumulative, including the most recent reductions and calibrations of all
data taken by SDSS since the first phase began operations in 2000. New in DR14
is the first public release of data from the extended Baryon Oscillation
Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS); the first data from the second phase of the
Apache Point Observatory (APO) Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE-2),
including stellar parameter estimates from an innovative data driven machine
learning algorithm known as "The Cannon"; and almost twice as many data cubes
from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA) survey as were in the previous
release (N = 2812 in total). This paper describes the location and format of
the publicly available data from SDSS-IV surveys. We provide references to the
important technical papers describing how these data have been taken (both
targeting and observation details) and processed for scientific use. The SDSS
website (www.sdss.org) has been updated for this release, and provides links to
data downloads, as well as tutorials and examples of data use. SDSS-IV is
planning to continue to collect astronomical data until 2020, and will be

Training Genetic Counsellors to Deliver an Innovative Therapeutic Intervention: their views and experience of facilitating multi-family discussion groups
Innovations in clinical genetics have increased diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of inherited genetic conditions (IGCs). This has led to an increased number of families seeking genetic testing and / or genetic counselling and increased the clinical load for genetic counsellors (GCs). Keeping pace with biomedical discoveries, interventions are required to support families to understand, communicate and cope with their Inherited Genetic Condition. The Socio-Psychological Research in Genomics (SPRinG) collaborative have developed a new intervention, based on multi-family discussion groups (MFDGs), to support families affected by IGCs and train GCs in its delivery. A potential challenge to implementing the intervention was whether GCs were willing and able to undergo the training to deliver the MFDG. In analysing three multi-perspective interviews with GCs, this paper evaluates the training received. Findings suggests that MFDGs are a potential valuable resource in supporting families to communicate genetic risk information and can enhance family function and emotional well-being. Furthermore, we demonstrate that it is feasible to train GCs in the delivery of the intervention and that it has the potential to be integrated into clinical practice. Its longer term implementation into routine clinical practice however relies on changes in both organisation of clinical genetics services and genetic counsellors' professional development
Symbionts as Major Modulators of Insect Health: Lactic Acid Bacteria and Honeybees
Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are well recognized beneficial host-associated members of the microbiota of humans and animals. Yet LAB-associations of invertebrates have been poorly characterized and their functions remain obscure. Here we show that honeybees possess an abundant, diverse and ancient LAB microbiota in their honey crop with beneficial effects for bee health, defending them against microbial threats. Our studies of LAB in all extant honeybee species plus related apid bees reveal one of the largest collections of novel species from the genera Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium ever discovered within a single insect and suggest a long (>80 mya) history of association. Bee associated microbiotas highlight Lactobacillus kunkeei as the dominant LAB member. Those showing potent antimicrobial properties are acquired by callow honey bee workers from nestmates and maintained within the crop in biofilms, though beekeeping management practices can negatively impact this microbiota. Prophylactic practices that enhance LAB, or supplementary feeding of LAB, may serve in integrated approaches to sustainable pollinator service provision. We anticipate this microbiota will become central to studies on honeybee health, including colony collapse disorder, and act as an exemplar case of insect-microbe symbiosis
Ants Sow the Seeds of Global Diversification in Flowering Plants
Background: The extraordinary diversification of angiosperm plants in the Cretaceous and Tertiary periods has produced an
estimated 250,000–300,000 living angiosperm species and has fundamentally altered terrestrial ecosystems. Interactions
with animals as pollinators or seed dispersers have long been suspected as drivers of angiosperm diversification, yet
empirical examples remain sparse or inconclusive. Seed dispersal by ants (myrmecochory) may drive diversification as it can reduce extinction by providing selective advantages to plants and can increase speciation by enhancing geographical
isolation by extremely limited dispersal distances.
Methodology/Principal Findings: Using the most comprehensive sister-group comparison to date, we tested the hypothesis that myrmecochory leads to higher diversification rates in angiosperm plants. As predicted, diversification rates
were substantially higher in ant-dispersed plants than in their non-myrmecochorous relatives. Data from 101 angiosperm
lineages in 241 genera from all continents except Antarctica revealed that ant-dispersed lineages contained on average
more than twice as many species as did their non-myrmecochorous sister groups. Contrasts in species diversity between
sister groups demonstrated that diversification rates did not depend on seed dispersal mode in the sister group and were
higher in myrmecochorous lineages in most biogeographic regions.
Conclusions/Significance: Myrmecochory, which has evolved independently at least 100 times in angiosperms and is
estimated to be present in at least 77 families and 11 000 species, is a key evolutionary innovation and a globally important driver of plant diversity. Myrmecochory provides the best example to date for a consistent effect of any mutualism on largescale diversification
