    Characterization of a junctionless diode

    A diode has been realised using a silicon junctionless (JL) transistor. The device contains neither PN junction nor Schottky junction. The device is measured at different temperatures. The characteristics of the JL diode are essentially identical to those of a regular PN junction diode. The JL diode has an on/off current ratio of 10(8), an ideality factor of 1.09, and a reverse leakage current of 1 x 10(-14) A at room temperature. The mechanism of the leakage current is discussed using the activation energy (E-A). The turn-on voltage of the device can be tuned by JL transistor threshold voltage.     Probing the Thermal Deoxygenation of Graphene Oxide using High Resolution In Situ X-Ray based Spectroscopies

    Despite the recent developments in Graphene Oxide due to its importance as a host precursor of Graphene, the detailed electronic structure and its evolution during the thermal reduction remain largely unknown, hindering its potential applications. We show that a combination of high resolution in situ X-ray photoemission and X-ray absorption spectroscopies offer a powerful approach to monitor the deoxygenation process and comprehensively evaluate the electronic structure of Graphene Oxide thin films at different stages of the thermal reduction process. It is established that the edge plane carboxyl groups are highly unstable, whereas carbonyl groups are more difficult to remove. The results consistently support the formation of phenol groups through reaction of basal plane epoxide groups with adjacent hydroxyl groups at moderate degrees of thermal activation (~400 {\deg}C). The phenol groups are predominant over carbonyl groups and survive even at a temperature of 1000 {\deg}C.     Biodegradable and water resistant poly(vinyl) alcohol (PVA)/starch (ST)/glycerol (GL)/halloysite nanotube (HNT) nanocomposite films for sustainable food packaging

    As a novel biodegradable material, poly (vinyl) alcohol (PVA)/starch (ST)/ glycerol (GL)/halloysite nanotube (HNT) nanocomposite films were prepared by solution casting at the HNT contents of 0.25, 0.5, 1, 3, and 5 wt%. Water absorption capacity and water solubility of nanocomposite films were decreased remarkably by 44.24 and 48.05%, respectively, with increasing the HNT content from 0 to 5 wt% when compared with those of biopolymer matrices. Moreover, the water contact angle of nanocomposite films increased by 21.36◦ with the incorporation of HNTs. The presence of HNTs appeared to reduce the overall migration rates for PVA/ST/GL/HNT nanocomposite films when interacting with either hydrophilic or lipophilic food simulants. However, the migration rates of HNTs alone were enhanced with increasing the HNT content in hydrophilic, lipophilic, and acidic food simulants. On the other hand, the biodegradation rate and light transmittance of nanocomposite films were reduced linearly by 18.56 and 26.90% with increasing the HNT content from 0 to 5 wt%. Overall, novel PVA/ST/GL/HNT nanocomposite films in this study offer highly competitive materials with excellent water resistance, good biodegradability, and acceptable transparency to be potentially used for sustainable food packaging particularly targeting lipophilic and acidic foodstuffs

    Development and Assessment of a Patient-Reported Outcome Instrument for Gender-Affirming Care

    Importance: There is an urgent need for a validated gender-affirming care-specific patient-reported outcome measure (PROM). Objective: To field test the GENDER-Q, a new PROM for gender-affirming care, in a large, international sample of transgender and gender diverse (TGD) adults and evaluate its psychometric properties. Design, Setting, and Participants: This international cross-sectional study was conducted among TGD adults aged 18 years and older who were seeking or had received gender-affirming care within the past 5 years at 21 clinical sites across Canada, the United States, the Netherlands, and Spain; participants were also recruited through community groups (eg, crowdsourcing platform, social media). The study was conducted between February 2022 and March 2024. Participants had to be capable of completing the instrument in English, Danish, Dutch, or French-Canadian. Eligible participants accessed an online REDCap survey to complete sociodemographic questions and questions about gender-affirming care they had received or sought (ie, to look, function, or feel masculine, feminine, gender fluid, or another way). Main Outcome and Measures: Branching logic was used to assign relevant instrument scales. Rasch measurement theory (RMT) analysis was used to examine the fit of the observed data to the Rasch model for each scale. Test-retest reliability and hypothesis-based construct validity of instrument scales were examined. The hypothesis was that instrument scale scores would increase with better outcomes on corresponding categorical questions. Results: A total of 5497 participants (mean [SD] age, 32.8 [12.3] years; 1837 [33.4%] men; 1307 [23.8%] nonbinary individuals; and 2036 [37.0%] women) completed the field test survey. Participants sought or had the following types of gender-affirming care: 2674 (48.6%) masculinizing, 2271 (41.3%) femininizing, and 552 (10.0%) other. RMT analysis led to the development of 54 unidimensional scales and 2 checklists covering domains of health-related quality of life, sexual, urination, gender practices, voice, hair, face and neck, body, breasts, genital feminization, chest, genital masculinization, and experience of care. Test-retest reliability of the scales (intraclass correlation coefficient [average] &gt;0.70) was demonstrated. Only 1 item (phalloplasty donor flap) had an ICC less than 0.70. As hypothesized, scores increased incrementally with better associated self-reported categorical responses. For example, among 661 participants who reported poor psychological well-being, the mean (SD) scale score was 45 (18) points; for those who reported excellent psychological well-being, the mean (SD) scale score was 85 (16) points (P &lt;.001). Conclusions and Relevance: In this cross-sectional study of 5497 TGD adults, the instrument demonstrated reliability and validity. The instrument was validated in an international sample and is designed to collect and compare evidence-based outcome data for gender-affirming care from the patients' perspective.</p

    Personalized medicine is a growing field that promises to provide individualized treatment that is tailored to each patient. For a startup personalized medicine company, an initial step in securing financing is to protect its intellectual property (IP), for example, through patent protection. When deciding whether to invest in a personalized medicine company, investors, such as venture capitalists, assess the scope of a personalized medicine company’s protection of its IP. Patent protection is a powerful way for a personalized medicine startup company to protect its IP, but patent protection for personalized medicine inventions can differ from one country to another. A personalized medicine company could benefit from developing a well-defined IP strategy for maximizing the scope and breadth of its IP protection. </jats:p
