Optical frequency synthesis and measurement using fibre-based femtosecond lasers
We report the synthesis and measurement of an ultra-precise and extremely
stable optical frequency in the telecommunications window around 1543 nm. Using
a fibre-based femtosecond frequency comb we have phase-stabilised a fibre laser
at 194 THz to an optical frequency standard at 344 THz, thus transferring the
properties of the optical frequency standard to another spectral region.
Relative to the optical frequency standard, the synthesised frequency at 194
THz is determined to within 1 mHz and its fractional frequency instability is
measured to be less than 2*10^{-15} at 1 s, reaching 5*10^{-18} after 8000 s.
We also measured the synthesised frequency against a caesium fountain clock:
here the frequency comparison itself contributes less than 4 mHz (2*10^{-17})
to the uncertainty. Our results confirm the suitability of fibre based
frequency comb technology for precision measurements and frequency synthesis,
and enable long-distance comparison of optical clocks by using optical fibres
to transmit the frequency information
Towards the Finite Temperature Gluon Propagator in Landau Gauge Yang-Mills Theory
Yang-Mills theories undergo a deconfining phase transition at a critical
temperature. In lattice calculations the temporal Wilson loop and Z_3 order
parameter show above this temperature a behavior typical of deconfinement. A
quantity of interest in the study of this transition is the gluon propagator
and its evolution with temperature. This contribution describes the current
status of an investigation of the finite temperature gluon propagator in Landau
gauge. It analyzes the high temperature case. The resulting equations are
compared to the corresponding ones of three-dimensional Yang-Mills theory.
Under certain assumptions it is found that a kind of spatial "confinement" is
still present, even at very high temperatures.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures, talk given by A. Maas at the 40th International

Residual Confinement in High-Temperature Yang-Mills Theory
The infrared behavior of Landau gauge gluon and ghost propagators are
investigated in Yang-Mills theory at non-vanishing temperatures.
Self-consistent solutions are presented for temperatures below the presumed
phase transition and in the infinite temperature limit. Gluon confinement is
manifest in the infrared behavior of these propagators. As expected confinement
prevails below the phase transition. In the infinite-temperature limit a
qualitative change is observed: the chromoelectric sector exhibits a
near-perturbative behavior while long-range chromomagnetic interactions,
mediated by soft ghost modes, are still present. The latter behavior is in
agreement with corresponding lattice results. It furthermore implies that part
of the gluons are still confined.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, poster presented by A.Maas at the Strong and

Finite-Temperature Yang-Mills Theory in Landau Gauge
The gluon and ghost propagators in Landau Gauge Yang-Mills Theory are
investigated. Self-consistent solutions are obtained from their equations of
motion above and below the presumed phase transition. Gluon confinement is
manifest in these solutions and can be read off the infrared behavior of the
gluon and ghost propagators. Confinement prevails below the presumed phase
transition. Above and in the infinite temperature limit, a qualitative change
is observed: The chromoelectric sector exhibits screening, while long-range
chromomagnetic interactions, mediated by soft modes, are still observed. At
least part of the gluon spectrum is still confined. These findings agree with
corresponding lattice results.Comment: 3 pages, 1 figure, talk presented by A.Maas at the Quark Confinement

Two-dimensional magnetotransport in Bi2Te2Se nanoplatelets
Single-crystalline Bi2Te2Se nanoplates with thicknesses between 8 and 30 nm
and lateral sizes of several micrometers were synthesized by a vapour-solid
growth method. Angle-dependent magnetoconductance measurements on individual
nanoplates revealed the presence of a two-dimensional weak anti-localization
effect. In conjunction with gate-dependent charge transport studies performed
at different temperatures, evidence was gained that this effect originates from
the topologically protected surface states of the nanoplates
Gender Gap in the Environmental Movement
It has been known in recent years, that there is a connection between political party choice, and the importance of the environment to their members. However, this correlation may only be skin deep. The objective of this research is to delve into the specific correlations between the importance of the environment to the voter, and their gender, religion, and propensity to joining New Social Movements (NSM’s). With environmentalism becoming a strong topic in candidate and voter discussions today, studies are being done to see what the audiences are backing environmentalism, and promoting its integration into modern American society. Therefore studies are being carried out to see what demographics will be more likely to back the green movement. Some recent studies have concentrated on the relationship between environmental concern and value orientation, or the correlation between environmental concern and membership of other NSM’s. However, it is the goal of this research to give a succinct analysis of the factors of the demographics of the above groups. This research paper will draw conclusions on the correlations between gender, religion, and voter propensity to joining New Social Movements, which will explain their chance on joining in on environmentalism, tying into the above studies mentioned. This research is conducted using the American National Election Studies data of 2012. The testing on this data is showing that there are statistically significant correlations of the above topics with environmentalism, which tie back into the ideology of the respondent

Helping young German professionals to join international development organizations: opportunities, shortcomings and reform needs
"German public servants are not appropriately represented in many international organizations. With these organizations increasingly using internal promotion to fill their management posts, the Federal German Government should do more to help young professionals and change from a reactive to a proactive, strategically oriented personnel policy for Germans in international organizations. At the same time, the general conditions for returning professionals should be improved. Germany has enough high-quality undergraduate and post-graduate courses and internships to prepare young professionals for work in the development field, but they are not sufficiently geared to occupational integration. Many young professionals fail to take adequate account in their career planning of the need, given the very limited number of permanent posts in international organizations, so to structure their training that they also have job prospects in other institutions at home and abroad. The training provided by secondary schools and universities should be backed by the early provision of careers guidance. In this, schools and universities should cooperate closely with the Büro Führungskräfte zu Internationalen Organisationen (Office for Managers in International Organizations – BFIO) of the Zentralstelle der Arbeitsvermittlung (Central Employment Agency – ZAV). The instruments of Germany's international personnel policy at middle, higher and top management levels should be complemented by an instrument to promote the advancement of young professionals that follows on directly from the programme of Beigeordnete Sachverständige zu Internationalen Organisationen (Experts Assigned to International Organizations, or BS Programme, a Federal Government programme that assists young professionals). The BS Programme should be expanded. At the same time, Germans working in the United Nations (UN) agencies and European Union (EU) institutions should be linked more closely to Germany and familiarized with the German development agenda through the installation of counterpart structures in the relevant German government departments,
through even closer attention from the Permanent Representatives and through the promotion of the development of networks." (excerpt
