A corpus-based lexical and grammatical error identification: L2 learners academic writing
Writing in English has never been an easy task to many second language (L2) learners. Many of them perform poorly in their English academic writing where numerous lexical and grammatical errors are found in their report. Therefore, this thesis investigates the difficulties faced by UTHM learners involved in academic writing by identifying and analyzing errors made by them with the application of error analysis procedures. This research attempts to find out the types and patterns of errors in which it focuses on the frequency of the lexical and grammatical errors of the L2 learners in their writing. Errors were investigated and identified based on students’ 36 progress and final reports which were assembled from first year engineering students; named as the Learner Corpus Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia(LCUTHM). The LCUTHM was analyzed by means of linguistics Natural Language Processing tools (NLP) such as CLAWS 5 tag set, Markin Version 4 and categorized by MonoConc Pro II in the form of word lists. Data were also analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS) software to determine the major errors learners committed in learners’ written work. The findings reveal that the major lexical and grammatical error categories made by learners were “Missing Word”, “Repetition”, and “Verb Form”. Finally, the integration of technology and the linguistics Natural Language Processing (NLP) tools can provide a fast and more effective method in assisting teachers in identifying errors, and designing syllabus in improving the language skills and achievement of L2 learners in their academic writing
Different Techniques and Algorithms for Biomedical Signal Processing
This paper is intended to give a broad overview of the complex area of biomedical and their use in signal processing. It contains sufficient theoretical materials to provide some understanding of the techniques involved for the researcher in the field. This paper consists of two parts: feature extraction and pattern recognition. The first part provides a basic understanding as to how the time domain signal of patient are converted to the frequency domain for analysis. The second part provides basic for understanding the theoretical and practical approaches to the development of neural network models and their implementation in modeling biological syste
Antarctica
His Majesty’s Visit to Antarctica This is photographic journey of His Majesty Seri Paduka Baginda Yang Di–Pertuan Agong Al–Wathiqu Billah Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin Ibni Al–Marhum Sultan Mahmud Al–Muktafi Billah Shah, Yang DiPertuan Agong XIII of Malaysia to Antarctica. It tells of His Majesty’s personal reflections and impressions through interviews with Prof. Dato’ Dr. Azizan Abu Samah and Tan Sri Dr. Salleh Mohd. Nor. His Majesty expressed admiration for the scientific research being undertaken by Malaysian scientists and their international counterparts on that cold continent and hoped that more Malaysian scientist will commit to undertake research in Antarctica. During the visit to Scott and Shackelton Huts, His Majesty admired and respected the courage and tenacity of the early explorers to that icy continent before the discovery of modern travel and technologies. His Majesty also expressed his admiration of the scientists who had dedicated their careers to research on the icy continent. This book also given a brief description of the Antarctic continent, the highest, driest and coldest continent in the world. It also tells about the Antarctic Treaty System and Malaysia’s involvement in Antarctic research. It concludes with a brief look at the future now that Malaysia has acceded to the Antarctic Treaty System
Bottleneck-based heuristic for three-machine flow shop scheduling
This paper considers a 3 machine flow shop (M1M2M3) with tendency of dominant
(bottleneck) machine at M1. The developed bottleneck based heuristics from previous
studies are considered in this case by Hezzeril (2010) and Irwan (2010), but were only
tested for dominant machine at M2 and M3 respectively. The heuristics have
successfully produced 67.24% of optimum solution at the middle process or M2 and
90.80% at the last process or M3 for 6 jobs problem. While for 10 jobs problem, the
heuristics can produce 14.64% at M2 and 90.98% at M3. As an extension of this study,
the bottleneck based heuristic scope is enlarged by developing a new heuristic for
dominant machine at M1 and combining it with the previously developed heuristics for
dominant machine at M2 and M3. The main objective is to develop scheduling heuristic
to evaluate the performance at M1 based on bottleneck analysis for M1M2M3 flow shop
and to combine with the developed heuristics from previous studies. The computer
program involved were Microsoft Excel and Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) and
the test of performance were conducted at 6 and 10 jobs problem. A simulated random
data within specific limitation being assigned at each job’s processing time produces
new recommended job arrangements. The generated makespan was compared with
optimum makespan from complete enumeration and lower bound (LB) analysis. Total
sets of 1000 simulated data at 6 and 10 jobs were allocated into 3 dominance level of
P1DL; weak, medium, and strong. Optimal solutions were obtained based on the total
results data that produce the ratio of 1. Based on the results, 62.40% of the solution
generated is optimum result for 6 jobs while 56.33% of the solution generated equals to
lower bound for 10 jobs. The heuristic performed moderately and decreased slightly
when number of jobs increased, showing that BMM1 heuristic is more suitable for lesser
number of jobs

Sailing the Archipelago in a Boat of Rhymes Pantun in the Malay World
The extremely popular poetic form from Insular Southeast Asia, the pantun, travelled from its unknown source throughout the Malay Archipelago, first in Malay, then in the languages of Southeast Asia. In the ports and states where they were received, local colour, other idiosyncrasies, references, and linguistic characteristics have been added, and in fact, special forms with special names developed. This basic form is known, composed, and loved in at least 40 dialects of Malay, and 35 non-Malay languages, in the Peninsula and many of the islands of Malaysia and Indonesia. It spread through trade routes, ports, and also via diasporas and colonial economic projects which caused numerous peoples to move, who in turn brought the pantun along with them. It is now the most dynamic single literary form and has the longest history
The concrete structure remedial assessements in marine environment from whole life asset management perspectives
This study makes use of a desk top review methodology to discover and understand the remedial assessment of damage concrete structures in the marine environment (sea water). Basically, the restorations of asset marine facility are done by using a correct and present repair technique to both spall concrete as well as corrode rebar and must follow the code and standards throughout construction periods. Specifically, the study undertook a comprehensive insight into the literature review
of three (3) major components of research, consisting of reinforced concrete of marine structure, understanding marine environment and management of rehabilitation marine facility. The research chooses a case study of an oil refinery jetty piles terminal at Marsden Point in New Zealand. The asset facility is poorly deteriorating due to aggressive action of marine environment and need attention. The asset owners are aim to establish potential maintenance strategies in restoration of his
asset facilities. The damaged marine structure will be looked at from whole life asset management perspectives; to identify various components of concrete structures that were subjected to steel corrosion and concrete deterioration. Application of whole life asset management paradigm in the case study will have significant impacts to the
facilities and the owner as well. The benefits with regard to implementation of whole life asset management approaches in managing the asset marine facility correlate with risk management, accountability, service facility management and financial efficiency. The refurbishment work will make use of current repair method in assessing the restoration of damage concrete piles. This should take account of a risk management study prior selection of best procurement routes for the case studies.
The case study is critically reviewed for options that suit the asset facility present condition and set up objectives to get the best approach adopted with regards to asset problem. The findings demonstrate that the adoption of the whole life asset management paradigm will promote the asset owner, to obtain best value for money concept from the investment and to gain benefits in terms of time, cost, quality and fit for purpose. It also help in promoting and prolong the asset lifespan and also to provide constant sustainable and economic service of asset facilities
