GW190412: Observation of a Binary-Black-Hole Coalescence with Asymmetric Masses

We report the observation of gravitational waves from a binary-black-hole coalescence during the first two weeks of LIGO’s and Virgo’s third observing run. The signal was recorded on April 12, 2019 at 05∶30∶44 UTC with a network signal-to-noise ratio of 19. The binary is different from observations during the first two observing runs most notably due to its asymmetric masses: a ∼30 M_⊙ black hole merged with a ∼8 M_⊙ black hole companion. The more massive black hole rotated with a dimensionless spin magnitude between 0.22 and 0.60 (90% probability). Asymmetric systems are predicted to emit gravitational waves with stronger contributions from higher multipoles, and indeed we find strong evidence for gravitational radiation beyond the leading quadrupolar order in the observed signal. A suite of tests performed on GW190412 indicates consistency with Einstein’s general theory of relativity. While the mass ratio of this system differs from all previous detections, we show that it is consistent with the population model of stellar binary black holes inferred from the first two observing runs

We investigated the species of Lepidoptera associated with the six most important plañís, three gap colonizing species [Perymenium ovalifolium, Cercis canadensis var. mexicana and Liquidambar styraciflua) and three shade-tolerant species [Clethra pringiei, Quercus germana and Podocarpus reichei) in the Biosphere Reserve El Cielo at Gómez Parías, Tamaulipas cloud forest. The leveis of herbivory (% If af area eaten) by each lepidopteran larvae were measured during the rainy season. Selectivity tests •.vere carried out evaluating the generalist-specialist insect effect. The resulta showed eigth different lepidopteran species. They consumed 7% of the available leaf area within the six plant species. Por pioneer species the % of leaf area grazed was ca. 3 times greater than for shade-tolerant species loaves.

The revist or Memorias de la Sociedad Científica Antonio Alzate was a monthly publication, edited by society of the same name founded on october 14th, 1884, in memory of the great Mexican intellectual Antonio Alzate.  This publication became one the most important scientific Mexican Journal of its time, due to the high academic quality if its mexican and foreign contributors.

A dhfr-ts- Leishmania major Knockout Mutant Cross-protects against Leishmania amazonensis

E10-5A3 is a dhfr-ts- Leishmania major double knockout auxotrophic shown previously to induce substantial protection against virulent L. major infection in both genetically susceptible and resistant mice. We investigated the capacity of dhfr-ts- to protect against heterologous infection by L. amazonensis. The degree of protection was evaluated by immunization of BALB/c or C57BL/6 mice with E10-5A3, followed by L. amazonensis challenge. Whether immunized by subcutaneous (SC) or intravenous (IV) inoculation, susceptible and resistant mice displayed a partial degree of protection against challenge with virulent L. amazonensis. SC-immunized BALB/c mice developed lesions 40 to 65% smaller than non immunized mice, while IV immunization led to protection ranging from 40 to 75% in four out of six experiments compared to non immunized animals. The resistant C57BL/6 mice displayed comparable degrees of protection, 57% by SC and 49% by IV immunization. Results are encouraging as it has been previously difficult to obtain protection by SC vaccination against Leishmania, the preferred route for human immunization
