    A search for the decay B+K+ννˉB^+ \to K^+ \nu \bar{\nu}

    We search for the rare flavor-changing neutral-current decay B+K+ννˉB^+ \to K^+ \nu \bar{\nu} in a data sample of 82 fb1^{-1} collected with the {\sl BABAR} detector at the PEP-II B-factory. Signal events are selected by examining the properties of the system recoiling against either a reconstructed hadronic or semileptonic charged-B decay. Using these two independent samples we obtain a combined limit of B(B+K+ννˉ)<5.2×105{\mathcal B}(B^+ \to K^+ \nu \bar{\nu})<5.2 \times 10^{-5} at the 90% confidence level. In addition, by selecting for pions rather than kaons, we obtain a limit of B(B+π+ννˉ)<1.0×104{\mathcal B}(B^+ \to \pi^+ \nu \bar{\nu})<1.0 \times 10^{-4} using only the hadronic B reconstruction method.Comment: 7 pages, 8 postscript figures, submitted to Phys. High-reflectivity broadband distributed Bragg reflector lattice matched to ZnTe

    Full text link
    We report on the realization of a high quality distributed Bragg reflector with both high and low refractive index layers lattice matched to ZnTe. Our structure is grown by molecular beam epitaxy and is based on binary compounds only. The high refractive index layer is made of ZnTe, while the low index material is made of a short period triple superlattice containing MgSe, MgTe, and ZnTe. The high refractive index step of Delta_n=0.5 in the structure results in a broad stopband and the reflectivity coefficient exceeding 99% for only 15 Bragg pairs.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    EuFe2_2As2_2 under high pressure: an antiferromagnetic bulk superconductor

    We report the ac magnetic susceptibility χac\chi_{ac} and resistivity ρ\rho measurements of EuFe2_2As2_2 under high pressure PP. By observing nearly 100% superconducting shielding and zero resistivity at PP = 28 kbar, we establish that PP-induced superconductivity occurs at TcT_c \sim~30 K in EuFe2_2As2_2. ρ\rho shows an anomalous nearly linear temperature dependence from room temperature down to TcT_c at the same PP. χac\chi_{ac} indicates that an antiferromagnetic order of Eu2+^{2+} moments with TNT_N \sim~20 K persists in the superconducting phase. The temperature dependence of the upper critical field is also determined.Comment: To appear in J. Phys. Soc. Jpn., Vol. 78 No.

    New insights into the genetic etiology of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias

    Characterization of the genetic landscape of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related dementias (ADD) provides a unique opportunity for a better understanding of the associated pathophysiological processes. We performed a two-stage genome-wide association study totaling 111,326 clinically diagnosed/'proxy' AD cases and 677,663 controls. We found 75 risk loci, of which 42 were new at the time of analysis. Pathway enrichment analyses confirmed the involvement of amyloid/tau pathways and highlighted microglia implication. Gene prioritization in the new loci identified 31 genes that were suggestive of new genetically associated processes, including the tumor necrosis factor alpha pathway through the linear ubiquitin chain assembly complex. We also built a new genetic risk score associated with the risk of future AD/dementia or progression from mild cognitive impairment to AD/dementia. The improvement in prediction led to a 1.6- to 1.9-fold increase in AD risk from the lowest to the highest decile, in addition to effects of age and the APOE ε4 allele

    Improved measurement of CP asymmetries in B-0 ->(c(c)over-bar)K0((*)) decays

    Get PDF
    We present results on time-dependent CP asymmetries in neutral B decays to several CP eigenstates. The measurements use a data sample of about 227x10(6) Upsilon(4S)-> B (B) over bar decays collected by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B Factory at SLAC. The amplitude of the CPasymmetry, sin2 beta in the standard model, is derived from decay-time distributions from events in which one neutral B meson is fully reconstructed in a final state containing a charmonium meson and the other B meson is determined to be either a B-0 or (0) from its decay products. We measure sin2 beta=0.722 +/- 0.040(stat)+/- 0.023(syst) in agreement with the standard model expectation

    Measurement of the electron energy spectrum and its moments in inclusive B -> Xe nu decays

    Get PDF
    We report a measurement of the inclusive electron energy spectrum for semileptonic decays of B mesons in a data sample of 52 million Y(4S)-->B(B) over bar decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B-meson factory at SLAC. We determine the branching fraction, first, second, and third moments of the spectrum for lower cutoffs on the electron energy between 0.6 and 1.5 GeV. We measure the partial branching fraction to be B(B-->Xenu,E-e>0.6 GeV)=[10.36+/-0.06(stat.)+/-0.23(sys.)]%

    Breast conserving surgery versus mastectomy: the influence of comorbidities on choice of surgical operation in the Department of Defense health care system

    Get PDF
    BACKGROUND: Studies on the effect of comorbidities on breast cancer operation have been limited and inconsistent. This study investigated whether pre-existing comorbidities influenced breast cancer surgical operation in an equal access health care system. METHODS: This study was based on linked Department of Defense cancer registry and medical claims data. The study subjects were patients diagnosed with stage I to III breast cancer during 2001 to 2007. Logistic regression was used to determine if comorbidity was associated with operation type and time between diagnosis and operation. RESULTS: Breast cancer patients with comorbidities were more likely to receive mastectomy (odds ratio [OR] 5 1.27; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.14 to 1.42) than breast conserving surgery plus radiation. Patients with comorbidities were also more likely to delay having operation than those without comorbidities (OR 5 1.27; 95% CI, 1.14 to 1.41). CONCLUSIONS: In an equal access health care system, comorbidity was associated with having a mastectomy and with a delay in undergoing operation

    Measurements of the mass and width of the ηc\eta_c meson and of an ηc(2S)\eta_c(2S) candidate

    No full text
    The mass and total width of the eta_c meson have been measured in two-photon interactions at the SLAC asymmetric B-Factory with the BABAR detector. With a sample of approximately 2500 reconstructed eta_c -> Ks K pi decays in 88 fb-1 of data, the measured eta_c mass and width are respectively 2982.5 +- 1.1 (stat) +- 0.9 (syst) MeV/c2 and 34.3 +- 2.3 (stat) +- 0.9 (syst) MeV/c2. Using the same decay mode, a second resonance with 112 +- 24 events is observed with a mass of 3630.8 +- 3.4 (stat) +- 1.0 (syst) MeV/c2 and width of 17.0 +- 8.3 (stat) +- 2.5 (syst) MeV/c2. This observation is consistent with expectations for the eta_c(2S) state
