Investigating the distribution of polybrominated diphenyl ethers through an Australian wastewater treatment plant
The aim of this study was to quantify the amount of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) released into the environment (biosolids, effluent) from a conventional Australian activated sludge treatment wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). The concentration of PBDE congeners was measured at various treatment stages and included four aqueous samples (raw, primary, secondary and tertiary effluents) and three sludges (primary, secondary and lime stabilized biosolids), collected at three sampling events over the course of the experiment (29 days). Semi-permeable membrane devices (SPMDs) were also installed for the duration of the experiment, the first time that SPMDs have been used to measure PBDEs in a WWTP. Over 99% of the PBDEs entering the WWTP were removed through the treatment processes, principally by sedimentation. The main congeners detected were BDE 47, 99 and 209, which are characteristic of the two major commercial formulations viz penta-BDE and deca-BDE. All the PBDE congeners measured were highly correlated with each other, suggesting a similar origin. In this case, the PBDEs are thought to be from domestic sources since domestic wastewater is the main contribution to the in-flow (approximately 95%). The mean concentration of SigmaPBDEs in chemically stabilized sewage sludge (biosolids) was 300microg kg(-1) dry weight. It is calculated that 2.3+/-0.3kg of PBDEs are disposed of each year with biosolids generated from the WWTP. If all Australian sewage sludge is contaminated to at least this concentration then at least 110kg of PBDEs are associated with Australian sewage sludge annually. Less than 10g are released annually into the environment via ocean outfall and field irrigation; this level of contamination is unlikely to pose risk to humans or the environment. The environmental release of treated effluent and biosolids is not considered a large source of PBDE environmental emissions compared to the quantities used annually in Australia
Polybrominated diphenyl ethers and polybrominated biphenyls in Australian sewage sludge
This paper presents a brief review of the international scientific literature of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs) in sewage sludge and a survey of these compounds in sewage sludge from 16 Australian wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). The ?PBDE mean concentration in the Australian study was 1137 ?g kg-1 dry weight (d.w.) (s.d. 1116) and ranged between 5 and 4 230 ?g kg-1 d.w. The urban mean of 1308 ?g kg-1 (s.d. 1320) and the rural mean of 911 ?g kg-1 (s.d. 831) are not statistically different and are similar to levels in European sludges. Principal components analysis was performed on the data set and revealed that 76% of the data variation could be explained by two components that corresponded to overall concentration of the pentaBDE and the decaBDE commercial formulations. An analysis of variance was performed comparing PBDEs levels at three WWTPs over the years 2005 and 2006, finding differences between treatment plants (BDE-47) but no significant difference in PBDE levels in the years 2005 and 2006. Low levels of BB-153 were detected in all samples of this survey (n = 16); mean 0.6 ?g kg-1 d.w. (s.d. 0.5). This compound has rarely been reported in any other study of sewage sludges undertaken outside Australia. This work highlights the need for a risk assessment of PBDEs in sewage sludge when used for land application, taking into account typical levels found in Australian sludges and soils
Local festivals, social capital and sustainable destination development: experiences in East London
This paper explores the nature of social capital arising from engagement in local festivals and the implications of this for the social sustainability of an emerging destination. Two case studies are developed from a longitudinal research project which investigates local festivals staged in the Hackney Wick and Fish Island area adjacent to Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in East London, UK between 2008 and 2014. This area has been directly affected by extensive development and regeneration efforts associated with the staging of the London 2012 Olympic Games. The two festivals considered here respond to the challenges and opportunities arising for local people as the area changes. One festival aims to foster a sense of community by creating shared experiences and improving communication across diverse groups. The other draws together the cultural community, links them to the opportunities arising as the area emerges as a destination, and attracts visitors. These festivals increase social capital in the area, but its distribution is very uneven. The accrual of social capital exacerbates existing inequalities within the host community, favouring the âhavesâ at the expense of the âhave notsâ. There are tensions between the development of social capital and social sustainability in this emerging destination

Shifting markers of identity in East London's diasporic religious spaces
This article discusses the historical and geographical contexts of diasporic religious buildings in East London, revealing â contrary both to conventional narratives of immigrant integration, mobility, and succession and to identitarian understandings of belonging â that in such spaces and in the concrete devotional practices enacted in them, markers and boundaries of identity (ritual, spatial, and political) are contested, renegotiated, erased, and rewritten. It draws on a series of case-studies: Fieldgate Street Synagogue in its interrelationship with the East London Mosque; St Antony's Catholic Church in Forest Gate where Hindus and Christians worship together; and the intertwined histories of Methodism and Anglicanism in Bow Road. Exploration of the intersections between ethnicity, religiosity, and class illuminates the ambiguity and instability of identity-formation and expression within East London's diasporic faith spaces
A 'Different Class'? Homophily and Heterophily in the Social Class Networks of Britpop
Social network analysis is increasingly recognised as a useful way to explore music scenes. In this article we examine the individuals who were the cultural workforce that comprised the 'Britpop' music scene of the 1990s. The focus of our analysis is homophily and heterophily to determine whether the clusters of friendships and working relationships of those who were âbest connectedâ in the scene were patterned by original social class position. We find that Britpop's 'whole network' is heterophilic but its 'sub-networks' are more likely to be social class homophilic. The sub-networks that remain heterophilic are likely to be united by other common experiences that brought individuals in the network to the same social spaces. We suggest that our findings on Britpop might be generalised to the composition of other music scenes, cultural workforces and aggregations of young people. Our study differs from research on, first, British âindie musicâ and social class which focusses upon the construction, representation and performance of social location rather than the relationships it might shape (such as Wiseman-Trowse, 2008) and second, the pioneering social network analyses of music scenes (such as Crossley 2008; 2009; 2015; Crossley et. al 2014) which currently lacks the explicit emphasis on social class
Fermi/LAT discovery of gamma-ray emission from a relativistic jet in the narrow-line quasar PMN J0948+0022
We report the discovery by the Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboard the Fermi
Gamma-ray Space Telescope of high-energy gamma-ray emission from the peculiar
quasar PMN J0948+0022 (z=0.5846). The optical spectrum of this object exhibits
rather narrow Hbeta (FWHM(Hbeta) ~ 1500 km s^-1), weak forbidden lines and is
therefore classified as a narrow-line type I quasar. This class of objects is
thought to have relatively small black hole mass and to accrete at high
Eddington ratio. The radio loudness and variability of the compact radio core
indicates the presence of a relativistic jet. Quasi simultaneous
radio-optical-X-ray and gamma-ray observations are presented. Both radio and
gamma-ray emission (observed over 5-months) are strongly variable. The
simultaneous optical and X-ray data from Swift show a blue continuum attributed
to the accretion disk and a hard X-ray spectrum attributed to the jet. The
resulting broad band spectral energy distribution (SED) and, in particular, the
gamma-ray spectrum measured by Fermi are similar to those of more powerful
FSRQ. A comparison of the radio and gamma-ray characteristics of PMN J0948+0022
with the other blazars detected by LAT shows that this source has a relatively
low radio and gamma-ray power, with respect to other FSRQ. The physical
parameters obtained from modelling the SED also fall at the low power end of
the FSRQ parameter region discussed in Celotti & Ghisellini (2008). We suggest
that the similarity of the SED of PMN J0948+0022 to that of more massive and
more powerful quasars can be understood in a scenario in which the SED

The Spectral Energy Distribution of Fermi bright blazars
(Abridged) We have conducted a detailed investigation of the broad-band
spectral properties of the \gamma-ray selected blazars of the Fermi LAT Bright
AGN Sample (LBAS). By combining our accurately estimated Fermi gamma-ray
spectra with Swift, radio, infra-red, optical and other hard X-ray/gamma-ray
data, collected within three months of the LBAS data taking period, we were
able to assemble high-quality and quasi-simultaneous Spectral Energy
Distributions (SED) for 48 LBAS blazars.The SED of these gamma-ray sources is
similar to that of blazars discovered at other wavelengths, clearly showing, in
the usual Log - Log F representation, the typical broad-band
spectral signatures normally attributed to a combination of low-energy
synchrotron radiation followed by inverse Compton emission of one or more
components. We have used these SEDs to characterize the peak intensity of both
the low and the high-energy components. The results have been used to derive
empirical relationships that estimate the position of the two peaks from the
broad-band colors (i.e. the radio to optical and optical to X-ray spectral
slopes) and from the gamma-ray spectral index. Our data show that the
synchrotron peak frequency is positioned between 10 and
10 Hz in broad-lined FSRQs and between and Hz in
featureless BL Lacertae objects.We find that the gamma-ray spectral slope is
strongly correlated with the synchrotron peak energy and with the X-ray
spectral index, as expected at first order in synchrotron - inverse Compton
scenarios. However, simple homogeneous, one-zone, Synchrotron Self Compton
(SSC) models cannot explain most of our SEDs, especially in the case of FSRQs

PKS 1502+106: a new and distant gamma-ray blazar in outburst discovered by the Fermi Large Area Telescope
The Large Area Telescope (LAT) on board the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope
discovered a rapid (about 5 days duration), high-energy (E >100 MeV) gamma-ray
outburst from a source identified with the blazar PKS 1502+106 (OR 103, S3
1502+10, z=1.839) starting on August 05, 2008 and followed by bright and
variable flux over the next few months. Results on the gamma-ray localization
and identification, as well as spectral and temporal behavior during the first
months of the Fermi all-sky survey are reported here in conjunction with a
multi-waveband characterization as a result of one of the first Fermi
multi-frequency campaigns. The campaign included a Swift ToO (followed up by
16-day observations on August 07-22, MJD 54685-54700), VLBA (within the MOJAVE
program), Owens Valley (OVRO) 40m, Effelsberg-100m, Metsahovi-14m, RATAN-600
and Kanata-Hiroshima radio/optical observations. Results from the analysis of
archival observations by INTEGRAL, XMM-Newton and Spitzer space telescopes are

A change in the optical polarization associated with a gamma-ray flare in the blazar 3C 279
It is widely accepted that strong and variable radiation detected over all
accessible energy bands in a number of active galaxies arises from a
relativistic, Doppler-boosted jet pointing close to our line of sight. The size
of the emitting zone and the location of this region relative to the central
supermassive black hole are, however, poorly known, with estimates ranging from
light-hours to a light-year or more. Here we report the coincidence of a
gamma-ray flare with a dramatic change of optical polarization angle. This
provides evidence for co-spatiality of optical and gamma-ray emission regions
and indicates a highly ordered jet magnetic field. The results also require a
non-axisymmetric structure of the emission zone, implying a curved trajectory
for the emitting material within the jet, with the dissipation region located
at a considerable distance from the black hole, at about 10^5 gravitational
