    Top squark and neutralino decays in a R-parity violating model constrained by neutrino oscillation data

    In a R-parity violating (RPV) model of neutrino mass with three bilinear couplings μi\mu_i and three trilinear couplings λi33′\lambda'_{i33}, where ii is the lepton index, we find six generic scenarios each with a distinctive pattern of the trilinear couplings consistent with the oscillation data. These patterns may be reflected in direct RPV decays of the lighter top squark or in the RPV decays of the lightest superparticle, assumed to be the lightest neutralino.     Background: Breast cancer is one of the most frequent occurring cancers in women and burgeoning worldwide. It is the second most common malignancy in India after carcinoma of the uterine cervix. In clinical trials, quality of life (QOL) outcome measurements is an important as endpoints with improving subjects physical, emotional, and social well-being.Methods: In this study, we were evaluated the comparison of the QOL in breast cancer patients on anthracycline-based regimen (six cycles of 5-fluorouracil, adriamycin, and cyclophosphamide [FAC] for a period of 18 weeks) and taxane-containing regimen (four cycles of adriamycin and cyclophosphamide [AC] followed by four cycles of paclitaxel [PTX] for a period of 24 weeks) using European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Questionnaire-Core 30.Results: During first 3 months of therapy, both treatment groups exhibited a reduction in health-related QOL (HRQOL) with no clinically significant difference between them. The effect on HRQOL was less evident 3 weeks after completing chemotherapy with HRQOL of both groups returning to near baseline scores.Conclusions: Both treatment regimens (FAC and AC → PTX [AC followed by PTX]) were equally tolerated in patients

    Selection of chromosomal DNA libraries using a multiplex CRISPR system.

    The directed evolution of biomolecules to improve or change their activity is central to many engineering and synthetic biology efforts. However, selecting improved variants from gene libraries in living cells requires plasmid expression systems that suffer from variable copy number effects, or the use of complex marker-dependent chromosomal integration strategies. We developed quantitative gene assembly and DNA library insertion into the Saccharomyces cerevisiae genome by optimizing an efficient single-step and marker-free genome editing system using CRISPR-Cas9. With this Multiplex CRISPR (CRISPRm) system, we selected an improved cellobiose utilization pathway in diploid yeast in a single round of mutagenesis and selection, which increased cellobiose fermentation rates by over 10-fold. Mutations recovered in the best cellodextrin transporters reveal synergy between substrate binding and transporter dynamics, and demonstrate the power of CRISPRm to accelerate selection experiments and discoveries of the molecular determinants that enhance biomolecule function

    Quantitative evaluation of chromosomal rearrangements in gene-edited human stem cells by CAST-Seq

    Genome editing has shown great promise for clinical translation but also revealed the risk of genotoxicity caused by off-target effects of programmable nucleases. Here we describe chromosomal aberrations analysis by single targeted linker-mediated PCR sequencing (CAST-Seq), a preclinical assay to identify and quantify chromosomal aberrations derived from on-target and off-target activities of CRISPR-Cas nucleases or transcriptional activator-like effector nucleases (TALENs), respectively, in human hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs). Depending on the employed designer nuclease, CAST-Seq detected translocations in 0%–0.5% of gene-edited human CD34+ HSCs, and up to 20% of on-target loci harbored gross rearrangements. Moreover, CAST-Seq detected distinct types of chromosomal aberrations, such as homology-mediated translocations, that are mediated by homologous recombination and not off-target activity. CAST-Seq is a sensitive assay able to identify and quantify unintended chromosomal rearrangements in addition to the more typical mutations at off-target sites. CAST-Seq analyses may be particularly relevant for therapeutic genome editing to enable thorough risk assessment before clinical application of gene-edited products

    Effect of size reduction on the ferromagnetism of the manganite La1-xCaxMnO3 (x = 0.33)

    In this paper we report an investigation on the ferromagnetic state and the nature of ferromagnetic transition of nanoparticles of La0.67Ca0.33MnO3\mathrm{La_{0.67}Ca_{0.33}MnO_3} using magnetic measurements and neutron diffraction. The investigation was made on nanoparticles with crystal size down to 1515 nm. The neutron data show that even down to a size of 1515 nm the nanoparticles show finite spontaneous magnetization (MSM_S) although the value is much reduced compared to the bulk sample. We observed a non-monotonic variation of the ferromagnetic to paramagnetic transition temperature TCT_C with size dd and found that TCT_C initially enhances on size reduction, but for d<50d < 50 nm it decreases again. The initial enhancement in TCT_C was related to an increase in the bandwidth that occured due to a compaction of the Mn-O bond length and a straightening of the Mn-O-Mn bond angle, as determined form the neutron data. The size reduction also changes the nature of the ferromagnetic to paramagnetic transition from first order to second order with critical exponents approaching mean field values. This was explained as arising from a truncation of the coherence length by the finite sample size.Comment: 12 figure

    Scaling of the Equilibrium Magnetization in the Mixed State of Type-II Superconductors

    We discuss the analysis of mixed-state magnetization data of type-II superconductors using a recently developed scaling procedure. It is based on the fact that, if the Ginzburg-Landau parameter kappa does not depend on temperature, the magnetic susceptibility is a universal function of H/H_c2(T), leading to a simple relation between magnetizations at different temperatures. Although this scaling procedure does not provide absolute values of the upper critical fieldH_c2(T), its temperature variation can be established rather accurately. This provides an opportunity to validate theoretical models that are usually employed for the evaluation of H_c2(T) from equilibrium magnetization data. In the second part of the paper we apply this scaling procedure for a discussion of the notorious first order phase transition in the mixed state of high temperature superconductors. Our analysis, based on experimental magnetization data available in the literature, shows that the shift of the magnetization accross the transition may adopt either sign, depending on the particular chosen sample. We argue that this observation is inconsistent with the interpretation that this transition always represents the melting transition of the vortex lattice.Comment: 18 pages, 12 figure

    Single hadron response measurement and calorimeter jet energy scale uncertainty with the ATLAS detector at the LHC

    The uncertainty on the calorimeter energy response to jets of particles is derived for the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). First, the calorimeter response to single isolated charged hadrons is measured and compared to the Monte Carlo simulation using proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of sqrt(s) = 900 GeV and 7 TeV collected during 2009 and 2010. Then, using the decay of K_s and Lambda particles, the calorimeter response to specific types of particles (positively and negatively charged pions, protons, and anti-protons) is measured and compared to the Monte Carlo predictions. Finally, the jet energy scale uncertainty is determined by propagating the response uncertainty for single charged and neutral particles to jets. The response uncertainty is 2-5% for central isolated hadrons and 1-3% for the final calorimeter jet energy scale.Comment: 24 pages plus author list (36 pages total), 23 figures, 1 table, submitted to European Physical Journal

    Standalone vertex nding in the ATLAS muon spectrometer

    A dedicated reconstruction algorithm to find decay vertices in the ATLAS muon spectrometer is presented. The algorithm searches the region just upstream of or inside the muon spectrometer volume for multi-particle vertices that originate from the decay of particles with long decay paths. The performance of the algorithm is evaluated using both a sample of simulated Higgs boson events, in which the Higgs boson decays to long-lived neutral particles that in turn decay to bbar b final states, and pp collision data at √s = 7 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC during 2011
