    2s1/2 occupancies in 30Si, 31P, and 32S

    Elastic electron scattering off Si-30 and P-31 was studied in an effective momentum-transfer range of 1.8-3.0 fm(-1). The form-factor data were analyzed together with existing data sets for these nuclei and for S-32 in a model-independent Fourier-Bessel expansion. For P-31 the M1 contribution was subtracted following an established parametrization. Results of Hartree-Fock (HF) calculations, performed for these three nuclei in a spherical basis and in an axially deformed basis, are compared to experiment. Occupancies have been determined which, when used in the spherical-basis HF calculations, lead to a good description of the elastic form-factor data. The deformed-basis calculations have been used to study the influence of the deformation on the calculated binding energies and ground-state charge densities. In all calculations the influence of using different effective nucleon-nucleon interactions was investigated. The resulting differences in 2s(1/2) in occupancy are combined with results from previous existing (e,e'p) experiments to yield ''absolute occupancies'' for the 2s(1/2) orbital. The deduced 2s(1/2) occupancies for Si-30 and S-32 are 0.24(4) and 1.35(19), respectively.Peer reviewe

    Synchrotron Radiation X-Ray Microfluorescence Reveals Polarized Distribution of Atomic Elements during Differentiation of Pluripotent Stem Cells

    The mechanisms underlying pluripotency and differentiation in embryonic and reprogrammed stem cells are unclear. In this work, we characterized the pluripotent state towards neural differentiated state through analysis of trace elements distribution using the Synchrotron Radiation X-ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy. Naive and neural-stimulated embryoid bodies (EB) derived from embryonic and induced pluripotent stem (ES and iPS) cells were irradiated with a spatial resolution of 20 ”m to make elemental maps and qualitative chemical analyses. Results show that these embryo-like aggregates exhibit self-organization at the atomic level. Metallic elements content rises and consistent elemental polarization pattern of P and S in both mouse and human pluripotent stem cells were observed, indicating that neural differentiation and elemental polarization are strongly correlated

    UCP1 Induction during Recruitment of Brown Adipocytes in White Adipose Tissue Is Dependent on Cyclooxygenase Activity

    Background The uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) is a hallmark of brown adipocytes and pivotal for cold- and diet-induced thermogenesis. Methodology/Principal Findings Here we report that cyclooxygenase (COX) activity and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) are crucially involved in induction of UCP1 expression in inguinal white adipocytes, but not in classic interscapular brown adipocytes. Cold-induced expression of UCP1 in inguinal white adipocytes was repressed in COX2 knockout (KO) mice and by administration of the COX inhibitor indomethacin in wild-type mice. Indomethacin repressed ÎČ-adrenergic induction of UCP1 expression in primary inguinal adipocytes. The use of PGE2 receptor antagonists implicated EP4 as a main PGE2 receptor, and injection of the stable PGE2 analog (EP3/4 agonist) 16,16 dm PGE2 induced UCP1 expression in inguinal white adipose tissue. Inhibition of COX activity attenuated diet-induced UCP1 expression and increased energy efficiency and adipose tissue mass in obesity-resistant mice kept at thermoneutrality. Conclusions/Significance Our findings provide evidence that induction of UCP1 expression in white adipose tissue, but not in classic interscapular brown adipose tissue is dependent on cyclooxygenase activity. Our results indicate that cyclooxygenase-dependent induction of UCP1 expression in white adipose tissues is important for diet-induced thermogenesis providing support for a surprising role of COX activity in the control of energy balance and obesity development

    Viewing Loved Faces Inhibits Defense Reactions: A Health-Promotion Mechanism?

    We have known for decades that social support is associated with positive health outcomes. And yet, the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying this association remain poorly understood. The link between social support and positive health outcomes is likely to depend on the neurophysiological regulatory mechanisms underlying reward and defensive reactions. The present study examines the hypothesis that emotional social support (love) provides safety cues that activate the appetitive reward system and simultaneously inhibit defense reactions. Using the startle probe paradigm, 54 undergraduate students (24 men) viewed black and white photographs of loved (romantic partner, father, mother, and best friend), neutral (unknown), and unpleasant (mutilated) faces. Eye–blink startle, zygomatic major activity, heart rate, and skin conductance responses to the faces, together with subjective ratings of valence, arousal, and dominance, were obtained. Viewing loved faces induced a marked inhibition of the eye-blink startle response accompanied by a pattern of zygomatic, heart rate, skin conductance, and subjective changes indicative of an intense positive emotional response. Effects were similar for men and women, but the startle inhibition and the zygomatic response were larger in female participants. A comparison between the faces of the romantic partner and the parent who shares the partner’s gender further suggests that this effect is not attributable to familiarity or arousal. We conclude that this inhibitory capacity may contribute to the health benefits associated with social support.This research was funded by grant P07-SEJ-02964 from Junta de Andalucía (Spain)

    Performance and Operation of the CMS Electromagnetic Calorimeter

    The operation and general performance of the CMS electromagnetic calorimeter using cosmic-ray muons are described. These muons were recorded after the closure of the CMS detector in late 2008. The calorimeter is made of lead tungstate crystals and the overall status of the 75848 channels corresponding to the barrel and endcap detectors is reported. The stability of crucial operational parameters, such as high voltage, temperature and electronic noise, is summarised and the performance of the light monitoring system is presented

    Failure to detect Plasmodium vivax in West and Central Africa by PCR species typing

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p><it>Plasmodium vivax </it>is estimated to affect 75 million people annually. It is reportedly absent, however, from west and central Africa due to the high prevalence of the Duffy negative phenotype in the indigenous populations. Despite this, non-African travellers consistently return to their own countries with <it>P. vivax </it>malaria after visiting this region. An attempt was made, therefore, to detect the presence of <it>P. vivax </it>parasites in blood samples collected from the indigenous populations of west and central Africa.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Parasite species typing (for all four human malaria parasites) was carried out by PCR on 2,588 blood samples collected from individuals from nine African malaria-endemic countries.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Most infections (98.5%) were <it>Plasmodium falciparum</it>, <it>Plasmodium malariae </it>was identified in 8.5% of all infections, and <it>Plasmodium ovale </it>in 3.9%. The prevalence of both parasites varied greatly by country. Only one case of <it>P. vivax </it>was detected from Sao Tome, an island off the west coast of Africa, confirming the scarcity of this parasite in Africa.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The prevalence of <it>P. vivax </it>in local populations in sub-Saharan Africa is very low, despite the frequent identification of this parasite in non-African travellers.</p

    Inside and out: the activities of senescence in cancer.

    The core aspect of the senescent phenotype is a stable state of cell cycle arrest. However, this is a disguise that conceals a highly active metabolic cell state with diverse functionality. Both the cell-autonomous and the non-cell-autonomous activities of senescent cells create spatiotemporally dynamic and context-dependent tissue reactions. For example, the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP) provokes not only tumour-suppressive but also tumour-promoting responses. Senescence is now increasingly considered to be an integrated and widespread component that is potentially important for tumour development, tumour suppression and the response to therapy.This is the author accepted manuscript.
