Integrative neurobiology of metabolic diseases, neuroinflammation, and neurodegeneration

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a complex, multifactorial disease with a number of leading mechanisms, including neuroinflammation, processing of amyloid precursor protein (APP) to amyloid β peptide, tau protein hyperphosphorylation, relocalization and deposition. These mechanisms are propagated by obesity, the metabolic syndrome and type-2 diabetes mellitus. Stress, sedentariness, dietary overconsumption of saturated fat and refined sugars, and circadian derangements/disturbed sleep contribute to obesity and related metabolic diseases, but also accelerate age-related damage and senescence that all feed the risk of developing AD too. The complex and interacting mechanisms are not yet completely understood and will require further analysis. Instead of investigating AD as a mono- or oligocausal disease we should address the disease by understanding the multiple underlying mechanisms and how these interact. Future research therefore might concentrate on integrating these by systems biology approaches, but also to regard them from an evolutionary medicine point of view. The current review addresses several of these interacting mechanisms in animal models and compares them with clinical data giving an overview about our current knowledge and puts them into an integrated framework

Evaluación del aprendizaje en la Universidad en el contexto de los ECAES

El presente proyecto de investigación,“La evaluación del aprendizaje en la Universidad en el contexto de los ECAES”, además de los típicos apartados en esta clase de trabajos, como son: la introducción, justificación, el problema de investigación, objetivos, antecedentes, marcos teórico-conceptual y legal; está estructurado mediante dos enfoques: uno, documental; en el cual se trata con relativa extensión sobre los elementos principales constituyentes de la evaluación en el contexto de la aplicación de los ECAES: el ICFES, la UNESCO, la institución universitaria, la estructuración de la prueba ECAES, las competencias, la calidad, el concepto y el hecho de la evaluación, la Universidad Libre (foco del proyecto), etc.; y otro, participativo, en el cual con la aplicación de cuestionarios a los diversos estamentos de la Universidad Libre, se aprecia la percepción y reacción del contexto académico-laboral ante el examen ECAES. La parte conceptual y documental se apoya en la perspectiva del cambio de la educación y la evaluación en el siglo XX, la cual iría desde un conductismo externo y formalista, a una evaluación cognitivo-constructivista, más flexible, de acuerdo a las necesidades sociales actuales. Imbricada, en este cambio en la perspectiva de la educación y la evaluación, estaría la problemática suscitada por la aplicación de los “exámenes de calidad de la educación superior”, en la cual confluyen elementos externos, estandarizados y descontextulizados (evaluación externa), con el contexto de la evaluación interna en la Universidad, personalizada y contextualizada en el medio socio-cultural. Como final, en el enfoque participativo, se hace una propuesta que muestra como se resuelve o se está resolviendo el problema ECAES, desde el punto de vista del modelo pedagógico problémico de la Facultad de Ciencias de la Educación de la Universidad Libr

Identificación de características para la clasificación del estado de salud de rodamientos de bolas con termografía

La metodología de mantenimiento basado en la condición consiste en el monitoreo de los componentes críticos de un equipo con el fin de implementar intervenciones solamente si necesarias. En máquinas rotativas, los elementos más críticos son los rodamientos. Por lo tanto, resulta fundamental poder clasificar diferentes estados de salud de este componente para poder monitorear su desgaste. Este artículo estudia las diferentes características que se pueden extraer de la técnica de termografía con el objetivo de evaluar cuales podrían cumplir con la tarea de clasificar el estado de desgaste. Este trabajo trata solamente la falla en la pista exterior del rodamiento en una sola condición operativa del sistema; es decir, una sola velocidad angular y carga. Dicha falla es simulada mediante el electro-maquinado del componente con tres muescas de diferente diámetro para generar tres diferentes estados de salud. In rotating machines, the most critical element are the bearings. Therefore, it is essential to be able to classify different health states of this component in order to monitor its wear. This article studies the different features that can be extracted from thermal imaging with the objective of evaluating which ones could fulfill the task of classifying the state of health. This work deals only with failure in outer race of bearings in a single operating condition, that is, a single angular velocity and load. This fault is simulated by electro-machining the component with three notches of different diameter to generate three different health states. Transactive control of electric railway networks

The operation of each individual train is posed as an energy cost minimization problem that is constrained by both the dynamics of the train and the specific schedule it must meet. The solution of this problem yields an optimal power profile for the train to follow. For each of the railway's segments, the proposed transactive controller determines the minimum average cost of electricity and the dispatch of the DERs based on the energy usage of the trains across space and time. By iterating between the transactive controller and the cost minimization scheme of the individual trains, the proposed methodology yields optimal power profiles of all the trains in the system and the dispatch of the generation assets. This methodology is tested through numerical simulation of the Amtrak Northeast Corridor service between University Park Station in the outskirts of Boston, Massachusetts and New Haven Station in Connecticut. Simulations of the southbound service over the course of a year demonstrate that the minimum cost operation reduces retail energy supply and delivery charges by 10% when compared to minimum work operation. We test the addition of solar generation across the system as an example of DER integration.
