Observation of a new Xi(b) baryon
The first observation of a new b baryon via its strong decay into Xi(b)^-
pi^+ (plus charge conjugates) is reported. The measurement uses a data sample
of pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC,
corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.3 inverse femtobarns. The known
Xi(b)^- baryon is reconstructed via the decay chain Xi(b)^- to J/psi Xi^- to
mu^+ mu^- Lambda^0 pi^-, with Lambda^0 to p pi^-. A peak is observed in the
distribution of the difference between the mass of the Xi(b)^- pi^+ system and
the sum of the masses of the Xi(b)^- and pi^+, with a significance exceeding
five standard deviations. The mass difference of the peak is 14.84 +/- 0.74
(stat.) +/- 0.28 (syst.) MeV. The new state most likely corresponds to the
J^P=3/2^+ companion of the Xi(b).Comment: Submitted to Physical Review Letter
Measurements of inclusive W and Z cross sections in pp collisions at root s=7 TeV
This is the pre-print version of the Published Article, which can be accessed from the link below - Copyright @ 2011 Springer VerlagMeasurements of inclusive W and Z boson production cross sections in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV are presented, based on 2.9 inverse picobarns of data recorded by the CMS detector at the LHC. The measurements, performed in the electron and muon decay channels, are combined to give sigma(pp to WX) times B(W to muon or electron + neutrino) = 9.95 \pm 0.07(stat.) \pm 0.28(syst.) \pm 1.09(lumi.) nb and sigma(pp to ZX) times B(Z to oppositely charged muon or electron pairs) = 0.931 \pm 0.026(stat.) \pm 0.023(syst.) \pm 0.102(lumi.) nb. Theoretical predictions, calculated at the next-to-next-to-leading order in QCD using recent parton distribution functions, are in agreement with the measured cross sections. Ratios of cross sections, which incur an experimental systematic uncertainty of less than 4%, are also reported
Measurement of dijet angular distributions and search for quark compositeness in pp collisions at âs=7TeV
Dijet angular distributions are measured over a wide range of dijet invariant masses in pp collisions at root s = 7 TeV, at the CERN LHC. The event sample, recorded with the CMS detector, corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 36 pb(-1). The data are found to be in good agreement with the predictions of perturbative QCD, and yield no evidence of quark compositeness. With a modified frequentist approach, a lower limit on the contact interaction scale for left-handed quarks of Lambda(+) = 5.6 TeV (Lambda(-) = 6.7 TeV) for destructive (constructive) interference is obtained at the 95% confidence level
Transventricular cannulation of the aorta: a useful technique in acute aortic dissection
A 39-year-old morbidly obese man suffered type-A acute aortic dissection. At operation, both external iliac and common femoral arteries were thrombosed. Transventricular cannulation of the ascending aorta provided the only means of maintaining adequate flow on cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) to support an unusually high body mass index. This method of arterial cannulation for CPB was initially described in paediatric patients. We review the application of this technique in the adult population
Lung cancer masquerading as prosthetic valve endocarditis
Although marantic endocarditis secondary to pulmonary adenocarcinoma is well described, it is very unusual for this symptom to be the initial presenting feature of lung cancer. Here we describe such a case in which marantic endocarditis affected not only the patient's native mitral valve, but also his newly implanted bioprosthetic valve--a phenomenon that has not been previously reporte
Impact of surgeon-specific data reporting on surgical training
INTRODUCTION: Since April 2002, collection and publication of surgeon-specific data in adult cardiac surgery has become mandatory in the UK. It has been suggested that this may discourage consultants from allowing trainees to perform cases. The aim of this study was to attempt to analyse the effect of the introduction of surgeon-specific data (SSD) on surgical training in a large cardiac surgical centre. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on 2111 consecutive patients undergoing elective coronary artery bypass surgery, aortic and mitral valve surgery at Southampton General Hospital between April 2000 and April 2004. Results were analysed and compared over a 2-year period prior to and a 2-year period following the introduction of SSD. RESULTS: There were no changes in the overall mortality rate following the introduction of SSD. SSD was associated with a reduction in the overall proportion of cases performed by trainees (49% versus 42.8%; P = 0.004) and, in particular, a reduction in the proportion of aortic and mitral valve procedures performed by trainees. In addition, the proportion of cases performed by the trainees without consultant supervision declined significantly following SSD (18.7% versus 10.4%; P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Publication of surgeon-specific data has coincided with a decrease in both the proportion and variety of cases performed by trainee
Elevated BNP expression in mouse offspring left ventricles after protein restriction in utero
Objectives: We have previously shown that cyclin G1expression is reduced in fetal hearts after in utero protein restriction (PR) suggesting reduced cardiac cell cycle. However no difference in cyclin G1 expression was seen in adult offspring hearts. We hypothesised that the hearts of adult PR group should be under greater stress to maintain cardiac output. We therefore measured brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) expression in fetal hearts and left ventricles of adult offspring in the control (C) and PR groups because BNP is a marker of left ventricular dysfunction during volume overload or cardiac fibrosis (Nishikimi et al. Cardiovasc Res. 2006).Methods and results: Pregnant CD1 mice were placed on C (18% casein) or PR (9% casein) diet. Fetal hearts were collected on day 12 of gestation (C, n =11, PR, n =10) and the left ventricles (LV) of adult offspring at 6 months (C,n =17, PR, n =17). Fetal heart BNP mRNA expression relative to unit total RNA as measured by real-time PCR was similar in C and PR (C, 0.858F0.104 vs. PR, 0.761F0.096, p =NS). However, BNP expression in adult LV was greater in the PR than C (C, 7.043F0.68 vs. PR, 11.012F1.54, p =0.04).Conclusion: These results indicate that protein restriction in pregnancy induces cellular changes (indicated by cyclin G1 changes) in the fetal heart which places it under stress in adulthood (elevated BNP production). Because BNP can suppress ventricular remodelling, we are presently investigating cardiac structural changes to assess whether these alterations are adaptive or maladaptive
