A high salivary calcium concentration is a protective factor for caries development during orthodontic treatment

Get PDF
This research aimed to evaluate the salivary concentrations of fluoride (F-), calcium (Ca2+), and phosphate (Pi) after brackets bonding, and to identify the role of [F-], [Ca2+], and [Pi] on the development of active caries lesion (ACL) in individuals under fixed orthodontic treatment. A longitudinal investigation with twenty-two individuals from 11 to 22 years of age was performed in four phases (baseline and after 1, 3, and 6 months). Analyses were carried out considering the salivary concentration of [F-], [Ca2+], and [Pi], as well as the caries index. Data were analyzed using the Friedman test, followed by the Wilcoxon test and the multivariate Cox model (p?0.05). 1 and 3 months after appliance bonding, the [Ca2+] was statistically lower than after 6 months (p<0.0083). On the other hand, salivary [F-] and [Pi] did not show any significant difference during the follow-up. The Cox model demonstrated that the increase of 1 µg/mL in Ca2+ decreased the risk of ACL development by 27%. In conclusion, the levels of Ca2+ changed during orthodontic treatment. A high Ca2+ level in the saliva is a protective factor for ACL development over time

Is there a relationship between hippocampus-dependent memory and 5-ht2a receptors? Insights from a systematic review / Há uma relação entre a memória hipocampo-dependente e receptores 5-HT2a? Insights de uma revisão sistemática

This is a systematic review with the aim of analyzing the role of 5-HT2A receptors in hippocampal-dependent memory. In order to do this, we searched the PubMed, Science Direct, and Neuron databases between October 23 and 29, 2018, using the following descriptor combinations: memory, 5-HT2A, and hippocampus, present in the title, abstract, or keywords, with no restrictions on study date or language. Following search and selection, we analyzed risk of bias, and the results were subsequently synthesized according to the experimental model. Out of 40 articles, four were included in qualitative analysis. The data indicate that the 5-HT2A receptors in the hippocampus play an important role in the memory consolidation process, although they do not interfere in the encoding or retrieval processes of these memories. Additionally, chronic use of receptor agonists in models of Alzheimer’s disease also demonstrates better performance in the object recognition tests. The action of 5-HT2A receptors has also been shown to be important to aversive memory formation, thus attributing a prominent role to these receptors in hippocampal-dependent memory processes

This article discusses and reflects on the creation and consolidation of the International Week of Archeology Students MAE/USP (SIA), which began in 2007 and happened every two years. Organized in an open and collaborative way by Museum students, SIA has become a space for articulation, exchange of knowledge and experiences, which plays a fundamental role in the education of future professionals engaged in science and the management of archaeological heritage in the national Archaeology context. Over the various editions, the event has professionalized and gained the international mark, with the creation of a dynamic and democratic protocol for students to work together and with greater institutional insertion. An organization made by students and aimed at interested people in general, SIA has enhanced its open spirit and the growing dialogue with the different human collectives that have been demanding new practices and attitudes of archaeological practice. Through interviews, questionnaires, documentation reviews and our personal experience, we bring here a look at the history of SIA and its role in the academic trajectory of students and the Museum as a whole. We hope that this reflection can contribute to stimulating the continuity and emergence of other similar events across the country. Este artigo discute e reflete sobre a criação e consolidação da Semana Internacional de Arqueologia Discentes MAE/USP (SIA), que surgiu em 2007 e passou a ocorrer com frequência bianual. Elective cancer surgery in COVID-19-free surgical pathways during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic: An international, multicenter, comparative cohort study

Get PDF
PURPOSE As cancer surgery restarts after the first COVID-19 wave, health care providers urgently require data to determine where elective surgery is best performed. This study aimed to determine whether COVID-19–free surgical pathways were associated with lower postoperative pulmonary complication rates compared with hospitals with no defined pathway. PATIENTS AND METHODS This international, multicenter cohort study included patients who underwent elective surgery for 10 solid cancer types without preoperative suspicion of SARS-CoV-2. Participating hospitals included patients from local emergence of SARS-CoV-2 until April 19, 2020. At the time of surgery, hospitals were defined as having a COVID-19–free surgical pathway (complete segregation of the operating theater, critical care, and inpatient ward areas) or no defined pathway (incomplete or no segregation, areas shared with patients with COVID-19). The primary outcome was 30-day postoperative pulmonary complications (pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome, unexpected ventilation). RESULTS Of 9,171 patients from 447 hospitals in 55 countries, 2,481 were operated on in COVID-19–free surgical pathways. Patients who underwent surgery within COVID-19–free surgical pathways were younger with fewer comorbidities than those in hospitals with no defined pathway but with similar proportions of major surgery. After adjustment, pulmonary complication rates were lower with COVID-19–free surgical pathways (2.2% v 4.9%; adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 0.62; 95% CI, 0.44 to 0.86). This was consistent in sensitivity analyses for low-risk patients (American Society of Anesthesiologists grade 1/2), propensity score–matched models, and patients with negative SARS-CoV-2 preoperative tests. The postoperative SARS-CoV-2 infection rate was also lower in COVID-19–free surgical pathways (2.1% v 3.6%; aOR, 0.53; 95% CI, 0.36 to 0.76). CONCLUSION Within available resources, dedicated COVID-19–free surgical pathways should be established to provide safe elective cancer surgery during current and before future SARS-CoV-2 outbreaks
