Noise Control Capability of Structurally Integrated Resonator Arrays in a Foam-Treated Cylinder
Corrugated-core sandwich structures with integrated acoustic resonator arrays have been of recent interest for launch vehicle noise control applications. Previous tests and analyses have demonstrated the ability of this concept to increase sound absorption and reduce sound transmission at low frequencies. However, commercial aircraft manufacturers often require fibrous or foam blanket treatments for broadband noise control and thermal insulation. Consequently, it is of interest to further explore the noise control benefit and trade-offs of structurally integrated resonators when combined with various degrees of blanket noise treatment in an aircraft-representative cylindrical fuselage system. In this study, numerical models were developed to predict the effect of broadband and multi-tone structurally integrated resonator arrays on the interior noise level of cylindrical vibroacoustic systems. Foam layers with a range of thicknesses were applied near the inside surface of the cylinder to represent different degrees of conventional blanket treatments. Excitations including point force as well as harmonic and random fluctuating pressure fields were considered. The results suggest that structurally integrated resonators can be tuned to address a variety of noise control requirements and effectively used in conjunction with foam blanket noise treatments, but their relative benefit is reduced when thicker foam treatments are used

Genomic variants affecting homoeologous gene expression dosage contribute to agronomic trait variation in allopolyploid wheat.
Allopolyploidy greatly expands the range of possible regulatory interactions among functionally redundant homoeologous genes. However, connection between the emerging regulatory complexity and expression and phenotypic diversity in polyploid crops remains elusive. Here, we use diverse wheat accessions to map expression quantitative trait loci (eQTL) and evaluate their effects on the population-scale variation in homoeolog expression dosage. The relative contribution of cis- and trans-eQTL to homoeolog expression variation is strongly affected by both selection and demographic events. Though trans-acting effects play major role in expression regulation, the expression dosage of homoeologs is largely influenced by cis-acting variants, which appear to be subjected to selection. The frequency and expression of homoeologous gene alleles showing strong expression dosage bias are predictive of variation in yield-related traits, and have likely been impacted by breeding for increased productivity. Our study highlights the importance of genomic variants affecting homoeolog expression dosage in shaping agronomic phenotypes and points at their potential utility for improving yield in polyploid crops
Water-Ions Induced Nanostructuration of Hydrophobic Polymer Surfaces
When hydrophobic surfaces are in contact with water in ambient conditions a layer of reduced density is present at the interface, preventing the intimate contact between the two phases. Reducing the extent of this layer by degassing the water can have remarkable implications for the interaction between the two phases. The enhanced proximity between a hydrophobic polymer film and an aqueous solution can induce a self-assembled nanostructure on the solid surface through the development of an electro-hydrodynamic instability, due to the adsorption of the water-ions (hydronium and hydroxyl) at the interface. The self-assembled structure spontaneously relaxes back to the original flat morphology after few weeks at room temperature. This instability and the self-assembled structure are controlled by the hydrophobic surface charge, which is determined by the pH of the aqueous phase, and by the amount of gas dissolved. This effect can be easily adjusted to modify different hydrophobic polymeric substrates at the submicrometer level, opening pathways for producing controlled patterns at the nanoscale in a single simple waterborne step
Establishing a Core Outcome Measure for Fatigue in Patients on Hemodialysis: A Standardized Outcomes in Nephrology–Hemodialysis (SONG-HD) Consensus Workshop Report
Fatigue is one of the most highly prioritized outcomes for patients and clinicians, but remains infrequently and inconsistently reported across trials in hemodialysis. We convened an international Standardized Outcomes in Nephrology–Hemodialysis (SONG-HD) consensus workshop with stakeholders to discuss the development and implementation of a core outcome measure for fatigue. 15 patients/caregivers and 42 health professionals (clinicians, researchers, policy makers, and industry representatives) from 9 countries participated in breakout discussions. Transcripts were analyzed thematically. 4 themes for a core outcome measure emerged. Drawing attention to a distinct and all-encompassing symptom was explicitly recognizing fatigue as a multifaceted symptom unique to hemodialysis. Emphasizing the pervasive impact of fatigue on life participation justified the focus on how fatigue severely impaired the patient’s ability to do usual activities. Ensuring relevance and accuracy in measuring fatigue would facilitate shared decision making about treatment. Minimizing burden of administration meant avoiding the cognitive burden, additional time, and resources required to use the measure. A core outcome measure that is simple, is short, and includes a focus on the severity of the impact of fatigue on life participation may facilitate consistent and meaningful measurement of fatigue in all trials to inform decision making and care of patients receiving hemodialysis
