    Gaia-ESO Survey: Role of magnetic activity and starspots on pre-main-sequence lithium evolution

    Context. It is now well-known that pre-main-sequence models with inflated radii should be taken into account to simultaneously reproduce the colour-magnitude diagram and the lithium depletion pattern observed in young open star clusters. Aims. We tested a new set of pre-main-sequence models that include radius inflation due to the presence of starspots or to magnetic inhibition of convection. We used five clusters observed by the Gaia-ESO Survey that span the age range similar to 10-100 Myr, in which these effects could be important. Methods. The Gaia-ESO Survey radial velocities were combined with astrometry from Gaia EDR3 to obtain clean lists of high-probability members for the five clusters. A Bayesian maximum likelihood method was adopted to fit the observed cluster sequences to theoretical predictions to derive the best model parameters and the cluster reddening and age. Models were calculated with different values of the mixing length parameter (alpha(ML) = 2.0, 1.5 and 1.0) for the cases without spots or with effective spot coverage beta(spot) = 0.2 and 0.4. The models were also compared with the observed lithium depletion patterns. Results. To reproduce the colour-magnitude diagram and the observed lithium depletion pattern in Gamma Vel A and B and in 25 Ori, both a reduced convection efficiency, with alpha(ML) = 1.0, and an effective surface spot coverage of about 20% are required. We obtained ages of 18(-4.0)(+1.5) - Myr and 21(-3.0)(+3.5)Myr for Gamma Vel A and B, respectively, and 19(-7.0)(+1.5) 19(-7.0+)(1.5) Myr for 25 Ori. However, a single isochrone is not sufficient to account for the lithium dispersion, and an increasing level of spot coverage as mass decreases seems to be required. On the other hand, the older clusters (NGC 2451 B at 30(-5.0)(3.0) Myr, NGC 2547 at 35(-4.0)(+4.0) Myr, and NGC 2516 at 138(-42)(+48) Myr) are consistent with standard models (i.e. alpha(ML) = 2.0 and no spots) except at low masses: a 20% spot coverage appears to reproduce the sequence of M-type stars better and might explain the observed spread in lithium abundances. Conclusions. The quality of Gaia-ESO data combined with Gaia allows us to gain important insights on pre-main-sequence evolution. Models including starspots can provide a consistent explanation of the cluster sequences and lithium abundances observed in young clusters, although a range of starspot coverage is required to fully reproduce the data

    Differential effects of 2C9*3 and 2C9*2 variants of cytochrome P-450 CYP2C9 on sensitivity to acenocoumarol

    The 2C9*3 and 2C9*2 polymorphisms of cytochrome P-450 CYP2C9 are associated with hypersensitivity to warfarin and bleeding. The effect of these polymorphisms on sensitivity to acenocoumarol is unknown. Three groups of patients, with low, medium, or high acenocoumarol-dose requirements, were studied. Age influenced the acenocoumarol sensitivity. Bearing the 2C9*3 allele was associated with the need for a lower acenocoumarol dose (odds ratio [OR], 6.02; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.50-24.18); 80% of carriers of the 2C9*3 allele required a low dose. The 2C9*2 allele was associated with a lower acenocoumarol-dose requirement (OR, 2.70; 95% CI, 1.11-6.58) because of a reduced risk of the need for a high acenocoumarol dose (4.8% of the patients in the high-dose group carried the 2C9*2 allele versus 34.1% and 30.2%, respectively, in the medium-dose and low-dose groups). Therefore, carriers of 2C9*3 may need a low initial loading dose of acenocoumarol. Because acenocoumarol sensitivity with the 2C9*2 variant does not seem to be clinically relevant, the drug could be an alternative to warfarin in 2C9*2 carrier

    La calidad de las aguas del canal de desagüe de «El Reguerón» (Río Guadalentín: Cuenca del Segura)

    In this paper, the present quality state of the water from the last reache of Rio Guadalentín, one of the most important secundary river of the Rio Segura, has been studied. This reache is known as «El Reguerón». Several physico-chemical and biological parameters have been measured from eleven sampling-station, and their stational distribution and, in some cases, their diurnal curves has been stablished. We have studied the longitudinal distribution of the most relevant populations of macroinvertebrates with indicator valué of the water biological quality. We also reported on the load of poUutants in the reache through the caracterization, inventory and distribution of its most important sewages. The global analysis of the physico-chemical and biological parameters, using structural and pollution indexes, allows the Identification of three different sectors each one characterized by a particular level of contamination. Finally, a system for poUution diagnosis is stablished and a management plan for «El Reguerón» is proposed.Se ha estudiado el estado físico-químico y biológico actual de la calidad de las aguas del tramo final, canalizado, de uno de los afluentes más importantes del río Segura, el río Guadalentín. A partir de 11 estaciones de muestreo, se han medido una serie de parámetros físico-químicos y biológicos del agua, analizándose su distribución estacional y, de algunos de ellos, sus curvas de variación diaria. Se ha examinado la distribución longitudinal de las poblaciones más importantes de macroinver;tebrados con valor indicador de la calidad biológica de sus aguas. Se ha descrito la carga contaminante del canal, mediante la caracterización, inventario y distribución de los efluentes más importantes que vierten en él. El análisis global de los parámetros físico-químicos y el análisis biológico mediante la utilización de índices estructurales y de polución, ha permitido caracterizar tres tramos o sectores del cauce según su grado de alteración. Finalmente, se ha establecido un sistema de diagnosis de la contaminación y se ha propuesto un plan sostenido anticontaminación y de gestión para este tramo del cauce del río Guadalentín

    The Gaia-ESO public spectroscopic survey: implementation, data products, open cluster survey, science, and legacy

    Context. In the last 15 years different ground-based spectroscopic surveys have been started (and completed) with the general aim of delivering stellar parameters and elemental abundances for large samples of Galactic stars, complementing Gaia astrometry. Among those surveys, the Gaia-ESO Public Spectroscopic Survey, the only one performed on a 8m class telescope, was designed to target 100 000 stars using FLAMES on the ESO VLT (both Giraffe and UVES spectrographs), covering all the Milky Way populations, with a special focus on open star clusters. Aims. This article provides an overview of the survey implementation (observations, data quality, analysis and its success, data products, and releases), of the open cluster survey, of the science results and potential, and of the survey legacy. A companion article reviews the overall survey motivation, strategy, Giraffe pipeline data reduction, organisation, and workflow. Methods. We made use of the information recorded and archived in the observing blocks; during the observing runs; in a number of relevant documents; in the spectra and master catalogue of spectra; in the parameters delivered by the analysis nodes and the working groups; in the final catalogue; and in the science papers. Based on these sources, we critically analyse and discuss the output and products of the Survey, including science highlights. We also determined the average metallicities of the open clusters observed as science targets and of a sample of clusters whose spectra were retrieved from the ESO archive. Results. The Gaia-ESO Survey has determined homogeneous good-quality radial velocities and stellar parameters for a large fraction of its more than 110 000 unique target stars. Elemental abundances were derived for up to 31 elements for targets observed with UVES. Lithium abundances are delivered for about 1/3 of the sample. The analysis and homogenisation strategies have proven to be successful; several science topics have been addressed by the Gaia-ESO consortium and the community, with many highlight results achieved. Conclusions. The final catalogue will be released through the ESO archive in the first half of 2022, including the complete set of advanced data products. In addition to these results, the Gaia-ESO Survey will leave a very important legacy, for several aspects and for many years to come

    Autoantibodies against EPCR are found in antiphospholipid syndrome and are a risk factor for fetal death

    The antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is associated with thrombosis and fetal death but the pathologic mechanisms are poorly understood. Since endothelial protein C receptor (EPCR) plays a role in the anticoagulant system and in placental development, we hypothesized that anti-EPCR autoantibodies may be involved in clinical manifestations of APS and in fetal loss. The levels of immunoglobulin M (IgM) and IgG anti-EPCR autoantibodies were analyzed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in 43 patients with APS and 43 controls. Anti-EPCR levels were higher in APS patients than in controls. Interestingly, one of the IgM anti-EPCR autoantibodies inhibited the generation of activated protein C on endothelium. Since markedly high anti-EPCR levels were found in women with fetal death, 87 patients with a first episode of unexplained fetal death were subsequently analyzed and their anti-EPCR levels were compared with 87 matched controls. We found that anti-EPCR autoantibodies constitute an independent risk factor for a first fetal death episode: the adjusted odds ratios (ORs) for anti-EPCR autoantibodies above the 95th percentile were 23.0 (95% confidence interval [CI], 2.0-266.3) for IgM and 6.8 (95% CI, 1.2-38.4) for IgG. Anti-EPCR autoantibodies can be detected in APS patients and are independent risk factors for fetal death

    Holocene history of the 79°N ice shelf reconstructed from epishelf lake and uplifted glaciomarine sediments

    Nioghalvfjerdsbrae, or 79∘ N Glacier, is the largest marine-terminating glacier draining the Northeast Greenland Ice Stream (NEGIS). In recent years, its ∼ 70 km long fringing ice shelf (hereafter referred to as the 79∘ N ice shelf) has thinned, and a number of small calving events highlight its sensitivity to climate warming. With the continued retreat of the 79∘ N ice shelf and the potential for accelerated discharge from NEGIS, which drains 16 % of the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS), it has become increasingly important to understand the long-term history of the ice shelf in order to put the recent changes into perspective and to judge their long-term significance. Here, we reconstruct the Holocene dynamics of the 79∘ N ice shelf by combining radiocarbon dating of marine molluscs from isostatically uplifted glaciomarine sediments with a multi-proxy investigation of two sediment cores recovered from Blåsø, a large epishelf lake 2–13 km from the current grounding line of 79∘ N Glacier. Our reconstructions suggest that the ice shelf retreated between 8.5 and 4.4 ka cal BP, which is consistent with previous work charting grounding line and ice shelf retreat to the coast as well as open marine conditions in Nioghalvfjerdsbrae. Ice shelf retreat followed a period of enhanced atmospheric and ocean warming in the Early Holocene. Based on our detailed sedimentological, microfaunal, and biomarker evidence, the ice shelf reformed at Blåsø after 4.4 ka cal BP, reaching a thickness similar to present by 4.0 ka cal BP. Reformation of the ice shelf coincides with decreasing atmospheric temperatures, the increased dominance of Polar Water, a reduction in Atlantic Water, and (near-)perennial sea-ice cover on the adjacent continental shelf. Along with available climate archives, our data indicate that the 79∘ N ice shelf is susceptible to collapse at mean atmospheric and ocean temperatures ∼ 2 ∘C warmer than present, which could be achieved by the middle of this century under some emission scenarios. Finally, the presence of “marine” markers in the uppermost part of the Blåsø sediment cores could record modern ice shelf thinning, although the significance and precise timing of these changes requires further work

    Anisotropic flow of charged hadrons, pions and (anti-)protons measured at high transverse momentum in Pb-Pb collisions at sNN=2.76\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=2.76 TeV

    The elliptic, v2v_2, triangular, v3v_3, and quadrangular, v4v_4, azimuthal anisotropic flow coefficients are measured for unidentified charged particles, pions and (anti-)protons in Pb-Pb collisions at sNN=2.76\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 2.76 TeV with the ALICE detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Results obtained with the event plane and four-particle cumulant methods are reported for the pseudo-rapidity range η<0.8|\eta|<0.8 at different collision centralities and as a function of transverse momentum, pTp_{\rm T}, out to pT=20p_{\rm T}=20 GeV/cc. The observed non-zero elliptic and triangular flow depends only weakly on transverse momentum for pT>8p_{\rm T}>8 GeV/cc. The small pTp_{\rm T} dependence of the difference between elliptic flow results obtained from the event plane and four-particle cumulant methods suggests a common origin of flow fluctuations up to pT=8p_{\rm T}=8 GeV/cc. The magnitude of the (anti-)proton elliptic and triangular flow is larger than that of pions out to at least pT=8p_{\rm T}=8 GeV/cc indicating that the particle type dependence persists out to high pTp_{\rm T}.Comment: 16 pages, 5 captioned figures, authors from page 11, published version, figures at http://aliceinfo.cern.ch/ArtSubmission/node/186

    Centrality dependence of charged particle production at large transverse momentum in Pb-Pb collisions at sNN=2.76\sqrt{s_{\rm{NN}}} = 2.76 TeV

    The inclusive transverse momentum (pTp_{\rm T}) distributions of primary charged particles are measured in the pseudo-rapidity range η<0.8|\eta|<0.8 as a function of event centrality in Pb-Pb collisions at sNN=2.76\sqrt{s_{\rm{NN}}}=2.76 TeV with ALICE at the LHC. The data are presented in the pTp_{\rm T} range 0.15<pT<500.15<p_{\rm T}<50 GeV/cc for nine centrality intervals from 70-80% to 0-5%. The Pb-Pb spectra are presented in terms of the nuclear modification factor RAAR_{\rm{AA}} using a pp reference spectrum measured at the same collision energy. We observe that the suppression of high-pTp_{\rm T} particles strongly depends on event centrality. In central collisions (0-5%) the yield is most suppressed with RAA0.13R_{\rm{AA}}\approx0.13 at pT=6p_{\rm T}=6-7 GeV/cc. Above pT=7p_{\rm T}=7 GeV/cc, there is a significant rise in the nuclear modification factor, which reaches RAA0.4R_{\rm{AA}} \approx0.4 for pT>30p_{\rm T}>30 GeV/cc. In peripheral collisions (70-80%), the suppression is weaker with RAA0.7R_{\rm{AA}} \approx 0.7 almost independently of pTp_{\rm T}.
