    Impact of Level of Participation on Anxiety and Performance among Basketball Players

    The objective of the study was to investigate the impact of level of participation on anxiety and performance among basketball players. Sixty male basketball players representing three different levels that is inter-university, inter-district, inter-club, constituted the sample of the study. Anxiety and performance of the basketball players were selected as the variables of the study. Anxiety was measured by SCAT questionnaire and Performance was measured by rating scale. Descriptive statistics, One-way analysis of variance, LSD Post-hoq test and Pearson product moment Correlation analysis were employed to analyze the data. Significant differences were found among three levels of participation with regard to performance only and anxiety is found to have negative impact on the performance

    Multivalency in lectins-a crystallographic,modelling and light-scattering study involving peanut lectin and a bivalent ligand

    Multivalency is believed to be important in the activity of lectins, although definitive structural studies on it have been few and far between. We have now studied the complexation of tetravalent peanut lectin with a synthetic compound containing two terminal lactose moieties, using a combination of crystallography, dynamic light scattering and modelling. Light scattering indicates the formation of an apparent dimeric species and also larger aggregates of the tetrameric lectin in the presence of the bivalent ligand. Crystals of presumably crosslinked lectin molecules could be obtained. They diffract poorly, but X-ray data from them are good enough to define the positions of the lectin molecules. Extensive modelling on possible crosslinking modes of protein molecules by the ligand indicated that systematic crosslinking could lead to crystalline arrays. The studies also provided a rationale for crosslinking in the observed crystal structure. The results obtained provide further insights into the general problem of multivalency in lectins. They indicate that crosslinking involving multivalent lectins and multivalent carbohydrates could lead to an ensemble of a finite number of distinct periodic arrays rather than a unique array

    Production of He-4 and (4) in Pb-Pb collisions at root(NN)-N-S=2.76 TeV at the LHC

    Results on the production of He-4 and (4) nuclei in Pb-Pb collisions at root(NN)-N-S = 2.76 TeV in the rapidity range vertical bar y vertical bar <1, using the ALICE detector, are presented in this paper. The rapidity densities corresponding to 0-10% central events are found to be dN/dy4(He) = (0.8 +/- 0.4 (stat) +/- 0.3 (syst)) x 10(-6) and dN/dy4 = (1.1 +/- 0.4 (stat) +/- 0.2 (syst)) x 10(-6), respectively. This is in agreement with the statistical thermal model expectation assuming the same chemical freeze-out temperature (T-chem = 156 MeV) as for light hadrons. The measured ratio of (4)/He-4 is 1.4 +/- 0.8 (stat) +/- 0.5 (syst). (C) 2018 Published by Elsevier B.V.Peer reviewe

    Benzaldehyde-induced developmental genotoxicity triggers both neural and non-neuronal cells including the cells of immunity in Drosophila melanogaster

    Although benzaldehyde, an aromatic aldehyde, has been declared safe for uses in food, conflicting reports exist regarding its genotoxic and cytotoxic potentials in organisms. Our present study is the first attempt to evaluate the effects of exposure of benzaldehyde on the entire course of development of a eukaryote model organism, Drosophila melanogaster. Total time required for the initial appearance of the third instar larvae, pupae and adults increased dose dependently with the increasing dietary concentration of benzaldehyde. Exposure of flies to each concentration of benzaldehyde caused dose-dependent and significant reductions in the population of pupae and young adults of the fly. Developmental inhibition was associated with dose dependent and significant structural aberrations of larval polytene chromosomes like ectopic pairing, inversion, fusion, etc., and deformities of hemocytes and neuroblasts and death of hemocytes. As much as 34% (SD ± 1.76)-52% (SD ± 1.7) and 18% (SD ± 2.5)-40% (SD ± 3.38) hemocytes and neuroblasts, respectively, underwent nuclear deformations in response to dietary exposures of flies to BA 100–1000 mg/l. Moreover, 16% (SD ± 0.52)-31% (SD ± 1.97) and 19% (SD ± 0.3)-33% (SD ± 1.78) hemocyte mortalities in response to BA 100–1000 mg/l were determined by two cell viability assays. Thus our study revealed that benzaldehyde was genotoxic to Drosophila melanogaster larvae that might be responsible for larval cell death and their subsequent developmental retardation. As this fly possesses substantial genetic homology with human, possibility of developmental inhibition of the later due to exposure of this chemical during pregnancy may not be ruled out

    Not AvailableThis study addresses the plant beneficial enterobacteria present in rice rhizosphere and their efficiency for en- hancing nitrogen uptake in rice plant. Using culturable approaches, the population of total diazotrophs present in rhizosphere samples collected from different organic rice fields of Sikkim were studied and recorded in the range between 4.62 to 4.97 log 10 CFU/g soil. All the isolated commonly occurred diazotrophic bacterial isolates were screened based on their ability to fix nitrogen in milligram per gram of sugar consumed under in-vitro condi- tion with the reference check. In addition to nitrogen fixation, plant growth promoting traits such as production of indole-3-acetic acid and gibberellic acid were estimated using spectrophotometric approaches and compared against Bacillus subtilis as reference multi-potent plant growth promoting strain . In-vivo evaluation of these dia- zotrophic species in rice found improvement in both above and below ground responses in rice plant evaluated by estimating changes in chlorophyll concentration, plant biomass, root architecture, nitrogen uptake, microbial biomass and associated biochemical activity of soil. Further, the selected isolates were identified through DNA targeted analysis of 16S rRNA gene present in diazotrophs and which identified that the isolates belonged to the Enterobacter genus. Statistical models were prepared for deciphering the dynamics of plant growth improvement due to selective enrichment of rhizosphere bacteria and found significant ( p < 0.05) correlation between soil and plant parameters. This study concludes that Enterobacter spp. present in organic paddy soils of Sikkim having good nitrogen fixing abilities and whose selective enrichment in rhizosphere improved nitrogen uptake and plant growth promotion in rice plantNot Availabl
