    A study on correlation between depression, fear of fall and quality of life in elderly individuals

    Background: Fear of falling in elderly is a major cause of loss of independence, which has an effect on the physical function in elderly individuals. Depression is another important public health problem for older adults, because late life depression might have devastating consequences, such as an increase in mortality. QOL of older adults has become an important issue, because of demographic changes resulting from the ageing of the population. The goal of the study was to assess the depression and fear of fall which will provide further insights into the relationship between QOL, depression and fear of fall among elderly individuals in India.Methods: The sample consisted of 62 elderly people of age between 65 years to 75 years (mean=71.96, SD±5.92) were taken in the study. Depression was assessed using the 30-item geriatric depression scale (GDS), fear of falling was measured using falls efficacy scale (FES), QOL was assessed using the 26-item, World Health Organization Quality of Life, brief version (WHOQOL-BREF).Results: The data was analysed using Pearson co-efficient of correlation to examine the relationship between GDS, FES, and WHOQOL-BREF. The correlation co-efficient between GDS and FES was 0.5257 (p<0.05) and correlation coefficient between GDS and WHOQOL was 0.4372 (p<0.05).Conclusions: This study concluded that there was a significant association between the depression, fall efficacy, and QOL in the elderly people. This relationship has an important implication for the development of the rehabilitation programs that aim to improve the balance confidence and motivation will diminish its impact on QOL in elderly people

    Financial burden of stroke on family and caregiver in India: a literature review

    As life expectancy increases, India will face enormous socioeconomic burden to meet the costs of integrated rehabilitation of subjects with stroke. Caring for stroke patients leads to caregiver (CG) strain and financial burden. The CG burden is perceived differently in the Indian background depending on the society and culture. Caregiving stress has the potential to hamper rehabilitation of the patients and is of vital importance both as a research topic and the focus of clinical care. Cost and burden of informal care giving are high rural Indian community. Financial stress was prominent and common among the socioeconomically weaker division. The financial costs associated with family caregiving were a significant factor in caregiving burden, both for the male and female caregivers. Despite the high financial burden, limited recent studies have focused on costs associated with stroke in the India. Establishing total stroke-related costs is essential to evaluate and support the health economic research on stroke systems of care. Stroke care giving studies may help to better understand care giving impact, and also to find the most effective interventions to improve the quality of life of stroke patients and their caregivers, reduce the burden and depression of caregivers. Policies and programs to alleviate the financial burden and to provide social and financial support for these family caregivers are equally important for both family caregivers and their care receivers.

    A peep into the Plant miRNA world

    microRNAs constitute a major class of the small regulatory molecules that are involved in regulating the intrinsic normal growth of cells and development of organisms as well as in maintaining the integrity of genomes. The plant miRNA research gained momentum, 2002 onwards with identification of new miRNA molecules and their targets. This was accompanied by the discovery of plant homologs of proteins involved in miRNA biogenesis, including a new member SERRATE. The identification of several diverging and converging functions of miRNAs indicate that they play versatile roles in regulating cell differentiation and tissue development. This article provides an update on the conservation and identification of plant miRNAs. The classical miRNA biogenesis pathway and the associated proteins are discussed along with the emerging concept on the processing of miRNA-encoding introns (mirtrons). It also contains a concise account of plant miRNA targets and functions with focus on the recent successful attempt on engineering synthetic miRNAs to study gene function as well as to impart virus resistance in plants

    Pharmacogenetics is the study of genetic basis in the individual response to drugs. A thorough knowledge of this will lead to a future where tailor-made drugs, suiting an individual, can be used. Scandinavian countries have been known for wide usage of pharmacogenetics and the most widely used application is for genotyping CYP2D6 in treating psychiatric illness. The CYP-450 enzyme, a super family of microsomal drug-metabolizing enzymes, is the most important of enzymes that catalyzes phase-I drug metabolism reaction. CYP2D6 is a member of this family and it has been most intensively studied and the best example of pharmacogenetics variation in drug metabolism. Neuro-transmitter and drug acting CNS viz. codeine, dextromethorphan, metoprolol and tryptyline etc. are well metabolized by this enzyme. Thus, CYP2D6 is one of the most important and responsible enzymes which regulates bioavailability and metabolism of drug. Presently 75 alleles of CYP2D6 have been described which are responsible for variance of metabolism and toxicity of drugs.     Identification of mirtrons in rice using MirtronPred: a tool for predicting plant mirtrons.

    article i nfo Studies from flies and insects have reported the existence of a special class of miRNA, called mirtrons that are produced from spliced-out introns in a DROSHA-independent manner. The spliced-out lariat is debranched and refolded into a stem-loop structure resembling the pre-miRNA, which can then be processed by DICER into mature ~21 nt species. The mirtrons have not been reported from plants. In this study, we present Mir- tronPred, a web based server to predict mirtrons from intronic sequences. We have used the server to predict 70 mirtrons in rice introns that were put through a stringent selection filter to shortlist 16 best sequences. The prediction accuracy was subsequently validated by northern analysis and RT-PCR of a predicted Os- mirtron-109. The target sequences for this mirtron were also found in the rice degradome database. The pos- sible role of the mirtron in rice regulon is discussed.     Recent Trends in In-silico Drug Discovery

    A Drug designing is a process in which new leads (potential drugs) are discovered which have therapeutic benefits in diseased condition. With development of various computational tools and availability of databases (having information about 3D structure of various molecules) discovery of drugs became comparatively, a faster process. The two major drug development methods are structure based drug designing and ligand based drug designing. Structure based methods try to make predictions based on three dimensional structure of the target molecules. The major approach of structure based drug designing is Molecular docking, a method based on several sampling algorithms and scoring functions. Docking can be performed in several ways depending upon whether ligand and receptors are rigid or flexible. Hotspot grafting, is another method of drug designing. It is preferred when the structure of a native binding protein and target protein complex is available and the hotspots on the interface are known. In absence of information of three Dimensional structure of target molecule, Ligand based methods are used. Two common methods used in ligand based drug designing are Pharmacophore modelling and QSAR. Pharmacophore modelling explains only essential features of an active ligand whereas QSAR model determines effect of certain property on activity of ligand. Fragment based drug designing is a de novo approach of building new lead compounds using fragments within the active site of the protein. All the candidate leads obtained by various drug designing method need to satisfy ADMET properties for its development as a drug. In-silico ADMET prediction tools have made ADMET profiling an easier and faster process. In this review, various softwares available for drug designing and ADMET property predictions have also been listed

    Identification of genes differentially expressed in onion infected with Iris yellow spot virus

    Iris yellow spot virus (IYSV) causes severe damage and economic losses in onion production. Differential display-PCR was used to study changes in the gene expression of IYSV-infected onion plants. Representative up-regulated and down-regulated genes were selected for further study. Based on sequence analysis, the up-regulated genes were identified as retrotransposon protein, disease resistance-like proteins, chitinase, pathogenesis-related protein, cytochrome oxidase, cytochrome c, pentatricopeptide repeat-containing protein and pectin methylesterase. A DNA-binding transcriptional repressor protein gene was greatly down-regulated. . Most of the identified genes are known to play essential roles in plant defence systems, and are newly identified in onion sequences

    Enhancing Home Security with IoT Devices: A Vulnerability Analysis Using the IoT Security Test

    In order to carefully evaluate the susceptibility of common IoT devices found in smart homes, this research made use of the IoT Security Test framework. The findings showed a significant average drop in vulnerability ratings of 45% after evaluation, clearly indicating that improving IoT device security is feasible. The research classifies vulnerabilities found, highlighting the prevalence of Firmware Problems, Weak Passwords, and Network Vulnerabilities. Moreover, it examines the efficacy of remedial initiatives. These discoveries play a crucial role in enhancing the security of Internet of Things devices, providing a strong barrier for the protection of homeowners and the privacy of their data, especially in the constantly linked world of smart homes

    Differential cross section measurements for the production of a W boson in association with jets in proton–proton collisions at √s = 7 TeV

    Measurements are reported of differential cross sections for the production of a W boson, which decays into a muon and a neutrino, in association with jets, as a function of several variables, including the transverse momenta (pT) and pseudorapidities of the four leading jets, the scalar sum of jet transverse momenta (HT), and the difference in azimuthal angle between the directions of each jet and the muon. The data sample of pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV was collected with the CMS detector at the LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 fb[superscript −1]. The measured cross sections are compared to predictions from Monte Carlo generators, MadGraph + pythia and sherpa, and to next-to-leading-order calculations from BlackHat + sherpa. The differential cross sections are found to be in agreement with the predictions, apart from the pT distributions of the leading jets at high pT values, the distributions of the HT at high-HT and low jet multiplicity, and the distribution of the difference in azimuthal angle between the leading jet and the muon at low values.United States.
