    Relativity Theory and Time Perception: Single or Multiple Clocks?

    BACKGROUND:Current theories of interval timing assume that humans and other animals time as if using a single, absolute stopwatch that can be stopped or reset on command. Here we evaluate the alternative view that psychological time is represented by multiple clocks, and that these clocks create separate temporal contexts by which duration is judged in a relative manner. Two predictions of the multiple-clock hypothesis were tested. First, that the multiple clocks can be manipulated (stopped and/or reset) independently. Second, that an event of a given physical duration would be perceived as having different durations in different temporal contexts, i.e., would be judged differently by each clock. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS:Rats were trained to time three durations (e.g., 10, 30, and 90 s). When timing was interrupted by an unexpected gap in the signal, rats reset the clock used to time the "short" duration, stopped the "medium" duration clock, and continued to run the "long" duration clock. When the duration of the gap was manipulated, the rats reset these clocks in a hierarchical order, first the "short", then the "medium", and finally the "long" clock. Quantitative modeling assuming re-allocation of cognitive resources in proportion to the relative duration of the gap to the multiple, simultaneously timed event durations was used to account for the results. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE:These results indicate that the three event durations were effectively timed by separate clocks operated independently, and that the same gap duration was judged relative to these three temporal contexts. Results suggest that the brain processes the duration of an event in a manner similar to Einstein's special relativity theory: A given time interval is registered differently by independent clocks dependent upon the context

    Caregiver perspectives on the continued impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on children with intellectual/developmental disabilities

    The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted caregivers, especially those raising a child with an intellectual/developmental disability (IDD). While research has shown substantial disruption to the family, school, and occupational lives of the IDD community, little is known about the long-term impacts of COVID-19. To address this question, 249 caregivers were surveyed via an online questionnaire, between April and August of 2022 (more than 2 years into the pandemic) about potential impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on their child\u27s access to health- and school-based therapeutic services, caregiver mental health, and family life. The majority of caregivers reported disruptions in access to and quality of school-based therapeutic services for their child as well as a reduction in educational accommodations in the 2021-2022 academic year. Nearly half of caregivers reported feeling anxious and almost a quarter reported feeling depressed for the majority of their days. More than half of respondents reported decreased social support, and one-fifth reported employment disruptions and decreased access to food. These findings suggest that families of children with IDD are still experiencing ongoing negative impacts of the pandemic, emphasizing the critical need for continued support in the wake of the initial and more obvious disruptions caused by the COVID-19 outbreak

    Spaceflight Did Not Impair Cardiovascular Responses to Upright Posture in an Elderly Astronaut

    Some of the cardiovascular changes associated with spaceflight have similarities to those associated with aging. We studied the neuroendocrine and hemodynamic responses to upright posture in a 77 year old astronaut before and after spaceflight and compared them to those of a group of 20 younger (41 plus or minus 1 years) astronauts. While arterial pressure responses to standing were similar between the young and old astronauts, hemodynamic profiles were quite different. The elderly astronaut achieved adequate standing arterial pressure primarily by maintaining stroke volume and thus cardiac output. In spite of very high norepinephrine release, he had very little increase in heart rate or total peripheral resistance. This pattern persisted on all test occasions. These responses suggest high sympathetic responses, down-regulated adrenergic receptors and decreased venous compliance typical of aging. In contrast, younger astronauts did not maintain stroke volume or cardiac output with standing, but had significant increases in heart rate and resistance. These results suggest that this elderly subject had cardiovascular responses to standing that are expected in an aged person. These responses were not deleteriously affected by spaceflight. We suggest that healthy, fit elderly individuals are able to withstand the stresses of extreme environments and are not necessarily limited in their activities simply due to their chronological age

    A Neural Correlate of the Processing of Multi-Second Time Intervals in Primate Prefrontal Cortex

    Several areas of the brain are known to participate in temporal processing. Neurons in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) are thought to contribute to perception of time intervals. However, it remains unclear whether the PFC itself can generate time intervals independently of external stimuli. Here we describe a group of PFC neurons in area 9 that became active when monkeys recognized a particular elapsed time within the range of 1–7 seconds. Another group of area 9 neurons became active only when subjects reproduced a specific interval without external cues. Both types of neurons were individually tuned to recognize or reproduce particular intervals. Moreover, the injection of muscimol, a GABA agonist, into this area bilaterally resulted in an increase in the error rate during time interval reproduction. These results suggest that area 9 may process multi-second intervals not only in perceptual recognition, but also in internal generation of time intervals

    Systemic Optimization of Booster Stations - From Data Collection to Validation

    In the past, great efforts have been made to optimize pumps in the sense of a Product Approach: The energy efficiency at the pump's point of optimal operation was maximized by improving its design. While this has enabled considerable improvements in the optimal efficiency, in practical applications, where one finds oversizing or varying loads, 90% of the pumps are operated at partial load and thus not at their best operating point [1]. This insight has led to the Extended Product Approach [2], which considers pump and motor as part of a system with various operating points. A further step towards practically relevant energy assessment is the System Approach: here, the interactions of several components in the surrounding system are taken into account. This is of high relevance, since 85% of the energy consumption associated with pumps are actually dissipated in the system [1]. To address this, the systemic optimization of fluid systems was investigated in a joint project of TU Darmstadt, MLU Halle and KSB SE & Co. KGaA [3]. Employing the methodology Technical Operations Research (TOR), algorithms from discrete optimization were used to design optimal systems. In a current project of VDMA pumps+systems TOR is applied to a booster station for water supply in skyscrapers - a typical example of a fluid system. In this paper, we present the application of all steps of the TOR-methodology for a downscaled booster station. This includes data collection for modeling, global optimization as well as validation through simulations and experiments. First, the function of the system is described using load profiles that have to be fulfilled. Then the aim of the optimization - minimization of life cycle costs - is defined. For modeling the set of possible components, we use manufacturer's data. Based on this, a mathematical optimization model is developed. Only simplified models, e.g. without transient start-up procedures, can be considered within the optimization. For this reason, a simulation with Modelica is carried out in the next step. Afterwards, the optimal configuration is set up on a test rig and the feasibility of the configuration is checked. The fluid-system test rig is 6-meter-high and has five outlets to ambient pressure on different levels, which represents the downscaled water supply in a skyscraper. In total, 13 speed-controlled pumps are available, of which up to six can be operated and measured simultaneously as a booster station. A modular piping system allows the simple set-up of different system configurations. If shortcomings emerge either in simulation or experiment, the optimization program can be adapted

    Bestial boredom: a biological perspective on animal boredom and suggestions for its scientific investigation

    Boredom is likely to have adaptive value in motivating exploration and learning, and many animals may possess the basic neurological mechanisms to support it. Chronic inescapable boredom can be extremely aversive, and understimulation can harm neural, cognitive and behavioural flexibility. Wild and domesticated animals are at particular risk in captivity, which is often spatially and temporally monotonous. Yet biological research into boredom has barely begun, despite having important implications for animal welfare, the evolution of motivation and cognition, and for human dysfunction at individual and societal levels. Here I aim to facilitate hypotheses about how monotony affects behaviour and physiology, so that boredom can be objectively studied by ethologists and other scientists. I cover valence (pleasantness) and arousal (wakefulness) qualities of boredom, because both can be measured, and I suggest boredom includes suboptimal arousal and aversion to monotony. Because the suboptimal arousal during boredom is aversive, individuals will resist low arousal. Thus, behavioural indicators of boredom will, seemingly paradoxically, include signs of increasing drowsiness, alongside bouts of restlessness, avoidance and sensation-seeking behaviour. Valence and arousal are not, however, sufficient to fully describe boredom. For example, human boredom is further characterized by a perception that time ‘drags’, and this effect of monotony on time perception can too be behaviourally assayed in animals. Sleep disruption and some abnormal behaviour may also be caused by boredom. Ethological research into this emotional phenomenon will deepen understanding of its causes, development, function and evolution, and will enable evidence-based interventions to mitigate human and animal boredom

    Student learning dispositions: Multidimensional profiles highlight important differences among undergraduate stem honors thesis writers

    Various personal dimensions of students—particularly motivation, self-efficacy beliefs, and epistemic beliefs—can change in response to teaching, affect student learning, and be conceptualized as learning dispositions. We propose that these learning dispositions serve as learning outcomes in their own right; that patterns of interrelationships among these specific learning dispositions are likely; and that differing constellations (or learning disposition profiles) may have meaningful implications for instructional practices. In this observational study, we examine changes in these learning dispositions in the context of six courses at four institutions designed to scaffold undergraduate thesis writing and promote students’ scientific reasoning in writing in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. We explore the utility of cluster analysis for generating meaningful learning disposition profiles and building a more sophisticated understanding of students as complex, multidimensional learners. For example, while students’ self-efficacy beliefs about writing and science increased across capstone writing courses on average, there was considerable variability at the level of individual students. When responses on all of the personal dimensions were analyzed jointly using cluster analysis, several distinct and meaningful learning disposition profiles emerged. We explore these profiles in this work and discuss the implications of this framework for describing developmental trajectories of students’ scientific identities.     Choice biases in no-sample and delay testing in pigeons (Columba livia)

    In experimental tasks that involve stimuli that vary along a quantitative continuum, some choice biases are commonly found. Take, for instance, a matching-to-sample task where animals must, following the presentation of sample stimuli (that differ in duration), choose between two or more comparison stimuli. In tests where no sample is presented there is usually a bias towards the comparison that is correct following the shortest sample. To examine some aspects of these choice biases, pigeons were trained in a symbolic matching-to-sample task with two durations of keylight as samples, where key pecking had to be maintained during sample presentation. Firstly, even though animals were required to attend to the sample, a preference for the "short" comparison in no-sample testing was found. This result disproves an account where this effect was hypothesized to happen due to non-programmed learning resulting from the animals failing to attend to some trials. Secondly, even though a bias for "short" was found in both no-sample and delay testing, the extent of the biases differed between tasks, thus suggesting that forgetting the sample presented during a delay does not necessarily land the animal in a state similar to presenting no sample at all to begin with.The present study was supported by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology and the Portuguese Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education through national funds.     Thirty Years After Michael E. Porter: What Do We Know About Business Exit?

    Although a business exit is an important corporate change initiative, the buyer’s side seems to be more appealing to management researchers than the seller’s because acquisitions imply growth, i.e., success. Yet from an optimistic viewpoint, business exit can effectively create value for the selling company. In this paper we attempt to bring the relevance of the seller’s side back into our consciousness by asking: What do we know about business exit? We start our exploration with Porter (1976), focusing on literature that investigates the antecedents of, barriers to, and outcomes of business exit. We also include studies from related fields such as finance and economics.1 Through this research we determine three clusters of findings: factors promoting business exit, exit barriers, and exit outcomes. Overall, it is the intention of this paper to highlight the importance of business exit for research and practice. Knowing what we know about business exits and their high financial value we should bear in mind that exit need not mean failure but a new beginning for a corporation
