Lagrangian Statistics and Temporal Intermittency in a Shell Model of Turbulence
We study the statistics of single particle Lagrangian velocity in a shell
model of turbulence. We show that the small scale velocity fluctuations are
intermittent, with scaling exponents connected to the Eulerian structure
function scaling exponents. The observed reduced scaling range is interpreted
as a manifestation of the intermediate dissipative range, as it disappears in a
Gaussian model of turbulence.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

OBJECTIVEâTo investigate the relationships of serum adipocyte fatty acidâbinding protein (A-FABP) and epidermal fatty acidâbinding protein (E-FABP) with renal dysfunction and macrovascular complications in type 2 diabetic patients
Density mismatch in thin diblock copolymer films
Thin films of diblock copolymer subject to gravitational field are simulated
by means of a cell dynamical system model. The difference in density of the two
sides of the molecule and the presence of the field causes the formation of
lamellar patterns with orientation parallel to the confining walls even when
they are neutral. The concentration profile of those films is analyzed in the
weak segregation regime and a functional form for the profile is proposed.Comment: 9 pages and 8 figures. Needs EPSF macros. Submitted to PR
On the equivalence of the Langevin and auxiliary field quantization methods for absorbing dielectrics
Recently two methods have been developed for the quantization of the
electromagnetic field in general dispersing and absorbing linear dielectrics.
The first is based upon the introduction of a quantum Langevin current in
Maxwell's equations [T. Gruner and D.-G. Welsch, Phys. Rev. A 53, 1818 (1996);
Ho Trung Dung, L. Kn\"{o}ll, and D.-G. Welsch, Phys. Rev. A 57, 3931 (1998); S.
Scheel, L. Kn\"{o}ll, and D.-G. Welsch, Phys. Rev. A 58, 700 (1998)], whereas
the second makes use of a set of auxiliary fields, followed by a canonical
quantization procedure [A. Tip, Phys. Rev. A 57, 4818 (1998)]. We show that
both approaches are equivalent.Comment: 7 pages, RevTeX, no figure
Fully developed turbulence and the multifractal conjecture
We review the Parisi-Frisch MultiFractal formalism for
Navier--Stokes turbulence with particular emphasis on the issue of
statistical fluctuations of the dissipative scale. We do it for both Eulerian
and Lagrangian Turbulence. We also show new results concerning the application
of the formalism to the case of Shell Models for turbulence. The latter case
will allow us to discuss the issue of Reynolds number dependence and the role
played by vorticity and vortex filaments in real turbulent flows.Comment: Special Issue dedicated to E. Brezin and G. Paris

Hybrid Genetic Bees Algorithm applied to Single Machine Scheduling with Earliness and Tardiness Penalties
This paper presents a hybrid Genetic-Bees Algorithm based optimised solution for the single machine scheduling problem. The enhancement of the Bees Algorithm (BA) is conducted using the Genetic Algorithm's (GA's) operators during the global search stage. The proposed enhancement aims to increase the global search capability of the BA gradually with new additions. Although the BA has very successful implementations on various type of optimisation problems, it has found that the algorithm suffers from weak global search ability which increases the computational complexities on NP-hard type optimisation problems e.g. combinatorial/permutational type optimisation problems. This weakness occurs due to using a simple global random search operation during the search process. To reinforce the global search process in the BA, the proposed enhancement is utilised to increase exploration capability by expanding the number of fittest solutions through the genetical variations of promising solutions. The hybridisation process is realised by including two strategies into the basic BA, named as Ăą\u80\u9creinforced global searchĂą\u80\u9d and Ăą\u80\u9cjumping functionĂą\u80\u9d strategies. The reinforced global search strategy is the first stage of the hybridisation process and contains the mutation operator of the GA. The second strategy, jumping function strategy, consists of four GA operators as single point crossover, multipoint crossover, mutation and randomisation. To demonstrate the strength of the proposed solution, several experiments were carried out on 280 well-known single machine benchmark instances, and the results are presented by comparing to other well-known heuristic algorithms. According to the experiments, the proposed enhancements provides better capability to basic BA to jump from local minima, and GBA performed better compared to BA in terms of convergence and the quality of results. The convergence time reduced about 60% with about 30% better results for highly constrained jobs
Body appreciation around the world: Measurement invariance of the Body Appreciation Scale-2 (BAS-2) across 65 nations, 40 languages, gender identities, and age.
The Body Appreciation Scale-2 (BAS-2) is a widely used measure of a core facet of the positive body image construct. However, extant research concerning measurement invariance of the BAS-2 across a large number of nations remains limited. Here, we utilised the Body Image in Nature (BINS) dataset - with data collected between 2020 and 2022 - to assess measurement invariance of the BAS-2 across 65 nations, 40 languages, gender identities, and age groups. Multi-group confirmatory factor analysis indicated that full scalar invariance was upheld across all nations, languages, gender identities, and age groups, suggesting that the unidimensional BAS-2 model has widespread applicability. There were large differences across nations and languages in latent body appreciation, while differences across gender identities and age groups were negligible-to-small. Additionally, greater body appreciation was significantly associated with higher life satisfaction, being single (versus being married or in a committed relationship), and greater rurality (versus urbanicity). Across a subset of nations where nation-level data were available, greater body appreciation was also significantly associated with greater cultural distance from the United States and greater relative income inequality. These findings suggest that the BAS-2 likely captures a near-universal conceptualisation of the body appreciation construct, which should facilitate further cross-cultural research. Scholarly publishing depends on peer reviewers
The peer-review crisis is posing a risk to the scholarly peer-reviewed journal system. Journals have to ask many potential peer reviewers to obtain a minimum acceptable number of peers accepting reviewing a manuscript. Several solutions have been suggested to overcome this shortage. From reimbursing for the job, to eliminating pre-publication reviews, one cannot predict which is more dangerous for the future of scholarly publishing. And, why not acknowledging their contribution to the final version of the article published? PubMed created two categories of contributors: authors [AU] and collaborators [IR]. Why not a third category for the peer-reviewer?Scopu
Measurement of CP asymmetries and branching fraction ratios of Bâ decays to two charm mesons
The asymmetries of seven decays to two charm mesons are measured using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of of proton-proton collisions collected by the LHCb experiment. Decays involving a or meson are analysed by reconstructing only the or decay products. This paper presents the first measurement of and , and the most precise measurement of the other five asymmetries. There is no evidence of violation in any of the analysed decays. Additionally, two ratios between branching fractions of selected decays are measured. The CP asymmetries of seven B decays to two charm mesons are measured using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb of proton-proton collisions collected by the LHCb experiment.
