    Discursive Psychology for Applied Qualitative Research

    In this paper, we offer discursive psychology (DP) as a particularly useful analytic approach for engaging in applied research. We begin by overviewing the broad area of discourse analysis and then more specifically describe the contours of discursive psychology. Drawing upon a secondary, shared dataset, we provide a general discussion of the analytic process for conducting a DP informed analysis and offer some example findings. Notably, we highlight the limitations of doing DP work when working with a secondary data set and point also toward the possibilities and opportunities

    We’ve Been Here Before: An Open Letter to Defy, Resist, and Build

    We write this open letter in a historical moment in which President Trump has at once been described as “making America great” and “making America weak.” In this letter, we take up the position that Trump’s rise to power offers visible evidence of settler colonialism, white supremacy, and the permanence of racism. Drawing upon critical race theory and postcritical ethnography, we highlight how this radical new ‘normal’ is one that requires us, as qualitative researchers, to think carefully about our work, our practices, and the ways we navigate and come to know in the world. Specifically, we discuss how we might represent in our work structural violence that defies explanation. We thus invite readers to engage in the production of narratives that disrupt and resist seducing readers into substituting participation with consumption

    Construcción de Identidades de Investigador de Estudiantes Postgrado Explorado a través de Análisis del Discurso

    While many research methods courses challenge students to make sense of their own researcher identities as they relate to research paradigms and perspectives, there is a lack of research that examines how students actually go about constructing theses identities, particularly at the level of discourse. In this study, we attended to graduate students’ talk in an introductory research methods course, taking note of how students used particular discursive resources to construct a research identity in online classroom discussions. We analyzed 93 discussion posts students were asked to make in response to a discussion board prompt after completing assigned readings related to research paradigms and researcher identity. We identified two discursive patterns through our analysis: 1) minimizing knowledge, and 2) justifying paradigmatic orientations. Our findings highlight how being asked to talk about one’s research identity is a potentially fragile task, as evidenced by disclaimers of ‘knowing’, and one that evokes justifications and connections to students’ everyday lives. We highlight implications for the teaching of research methodology, particularly qualitative methods courses.Aunque muchos cursos de métodos de investigación retan a los estudiantes a dar sentido a sus propias identidades como investigadores con respecto a paradigmas y perpectivas de investigación, hay una falta de investigaciónes que examinan cómo los estudiantes actualmente construyen esas identidades, en particular a nivel del discurso. En este estudio atendimos a las conversaciónes de los estudiantes de postgrado en cursos de la introducción a métodos de investigación, tomando nota de como los estudiantes utilizan recursos discursivos para construir una identidad de investigador en los debates de clases en línea. Analizamos 93 mensajes que estudiantes completaron en respuesta a un aviso despues de terminar lecturas asignadas relacionadas a paradigmas de investigación y la identidad de investigador. Se identificaron dos modelos discursivos a través del análisis: 1) minimizar el conocimiento, y 2) justificando conclusiones paradigmicas. Nuestros resultados destacan como preguntarle a uno de hablar de su propia identidad de investigador es una tarea potencialmente frágil, como lo demuestran las renuncias de ‘conocimiento’, y que evoca las justificanciones y las conexiones a la vida cotidiana de los estudiantes. Destacamos implicaciones para la enseñanza de metodología de investigación, en particular cursos de métodos cualitativos

    Teacher Reading as Professional Development: Insights from a National Survey

    Over the past four decades, a number of researchers have attempted to describe the reading habits of teachers. Some have investigated the impact of reading habits generally, while most have focused on some kind of loosely defined “professional reading.” In relationship to this body of literature, the purpose of our descriptive survey study, which invited teachers from randomly selected schools in both large and small districts across the United States, was to both add to and update the available literature regarding teachers’ professional reading habits. We found that reading for professional development appears to be a common activity for the classroom teachers who participated in our survey. We also found that that the bulk of the teachers’ professional reading time was completed in the evenings and on weekends. We did not find statistically significant differences in reading preferences and behaviors when differences in degree were considered. Further, we did not find statistically significant differences in reading preferences when we compared the teachers’ responses by years of experience. Teachers noted that limited time and lack of relevancy were two primary reasons for why they did not read. We discuss implications for professional development

    Implementation and evaluation of a harm-reduction model for clinical care of substance using pregnant women

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Methamphetamine (MA) use during pregnancy is associated with many pregnancy complications, including preterm birth, small for gestational age, preeclampsia, and abruption. Hawaii has lead the nation in MA use for many years, yet prior to 2007, did not have a comprehensive plan to care for pregnant substance-using women. In 2006, the Hawaii State Legislature funded a pilot perinatal addiction clinic. The Perinatal Addiction Treatment Clinic of Hawaii was built on a harm-reduction model, encompassing perinatal care, transportation, child-care, social services, family planning, motivational incentives, and addiction medicine. We present the implementation model and results from our first one hundred three infants (103) seen over 3 years of operation of the program.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Referrals came from community health centers, hospitals, addiction treatment facilities, private physician offices, homeless outreach services and self-referral through word-of-mouth and bus ads. Data to describe sample characteristics and outcome was obtained prospectively and retrospectively from chart abstraction and delivery data. Drug use data was obtained from the women's self-report and random urine toxicology during the pregnancy, as well as urine toxicology at the time of birth on mothers, and urine and meconium toxicology on the infants. Post-partum depression was measured in mothers with the Edinburgh Post-Partum depression scale. Data from Path clinic patients were compared with a representative cohort of women delivering at Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children during the same time frame, who were enrolled in another study of pregnancy outcomes. Ethical approval for this study was obtained through the University of Hawaii Committee for Human Studies.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Between April 2007 and August 2010, 213 women with a past or present history of addiction were seen, 132 were pregnant and 97 delivered during that time. 103 live-born infants were delivered. There were 3 first-trimester Spontaneous Abortions, two 28-week intrauterine fetal deaths, and two sets of twins and 4 repeat pregnancies. Over 50% of the women had lost custody of previous children due to substance use. The majority of women who delivered used methamphetamine (86%), either in the year before pregnancy or during pregnancy. Other drugs include marijuana (59.8%), cocaine (33%), opiates (9.6%), and alcohol (15.2%). Of the women served, 85% smoked cigarettes upon enrollment. Of the 97 women delivered during this period, all but 4 (96%) had negative urine toxicology at the time of delivery. Of the 103 infants, 13 (12.6%) were born preterm, equal to the state and national average, despite having many risk factors for prematurity, including poverty, poor diet, smoking and polysubstance use. Overwhelmingly, the women are parenting their children, > 90% retained custody at 8 weeks. Long-term follow-up showed that women who maintained custody chose long-acting contraceptive methods; while those who lost custody had a very high (> 50%) repeat pregnancy rate at 9 months post delivery.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Methamphetamine use during pregnancy doesn't exist is isolation. It is often combined with a multitude of other adverse circumstances, including poverty, interpersonal violence, psychiatric comorbidity, polysubstance use, nutritional deficiencies, inadequate health care and stressful life experiences. A comprehensive harm reduction model of perinatal care, which aims to ameliorate some of these difficulties for substance-using women without mandating abstinence, provides exceptional birth outcomes and can be implemented with limited resources.</p

    Short Message Service (SMS)-Based Intervention to Improve Treatment Adherence among HIV-Positive Youth in Uganda: Focus Group Findings

    This paper presents one of the first qualitative studies to discuss programmatic barriers to SMS-based interventions for HIV-positive youth and discusses pathways through which youth perceive them to work. We conducted six focus groups with 20 male and 19 female HIV-positive youths in two clinics in Kampala, Uganda. We find that youth commonly use SMS as over 90% of this study’s youths knew how to read, write and send messages and almost three-fourths of them had phones. Youth strongly felt that the success of this intervention hinged on ensuring confidentiality about their HIV-positive status. Key programmatic challenges discussed where restrictions on phone use and phone sharing that could exclude some youth. Participants felt that the intervention would improve their adherence by providing them with needed reminders and social support. Youths’ suggestions about intervention logistics related to content, frequency, timing and two-way messages will be helpful to practitioners in the field

    Influence of shape and surface charge on the sedimentation of spheroidal, cubic and rectangular cuboid particles

    This study investigated the complex settling behaviour of colloidal particles with varied surface charge and shape factors, of specific relevance to nuclear waste processing. Caesium phosphomolybdate (CPM), zirconium molybdate (ZM) and zirconium citromolybdate (ZMCA) were firstly synthesised, producing spheroidal, cubic and rectangular cuboidal morphologies respectively, and compared to agglomerated titania. While zeta-potential measurements indicated all simulant particles attained low isoelectric points, surface group leaching rendered suspensions very acidic, with CPM around its IEP, and ZM/ZMCA stable and positively charged. In sedimentation tests at various concentrations in water and 2 M HNO₃, CPM and titania were found to settle with extremely high hindered settling exponents, consistent with aggregated structures. Exponents for ZM and ZMCA in water were both also well above values for spherical particles; however, this was assumed to be due to heightened drag effects from relative shape factors, rather than aggregation. ZMCA in particular showed a very high exponent of ~ 11.4, due to the propensity for the rod-like particles to settle in a flat conformation. For ZM in acid, double layer compression from the high electrolyte aggregated the dispersions, correlating to a significant increase in the settling exponent. An extended Stokes relationship was additionally used to understand theoretical limits of shape and aggregation on particle size prediction from hindered settling curves. Importantly, calculated sizes were consistent for the stable ZM and ZMCA in water, despite their non-sphericity and enhanced drag. The relationship failed however with agglomerated suspensions, highlighting its application as a general stability test for sedimenting dispersions

    Identification of 12 new susceptibility loci for different histotypes of epithelial ovarian cancer.

    To identify common alleles associated with different histotypes of epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC), we pooled data from multiple genome-wide genotyping projects totaling 25,509 EOC cases and 40,941 controls. We identified nine new susceptibility loci for different EOC histotypes: six for serous EOC histotypes (3q28, 4q32.3, 8q21.11, 10q24.33, 18q11.2 and 22q12.1), two for mucinous EOC (3q22.3 and 9q31.1) and one for endometrioid EOC (5q12.3). We then performed meta-analysis on the results for high-grade serous ovarian cancer with the results from analysis of 31,448 BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation carriers, including 3,887 mutation carriers with EOC. This identified three additional susceptibility loci at 2q13, 8q24.1 and 12q24.31. Integrated analyses of genes and regulatory biofeatures at each locus predicted candidate susceptibility genes, including OBFC1, a new candidate susceptibility gene for low-grade and borderline serous EOC

    The FANCM:p.Arg658* truncating variant is associated with risk of triple-negative breast cancer

    Abstract: Breast cancer is a common disease partially caused by genetic risk factors. Germline pathogenic variants in DNA repair genes BRCA1, BRCA2, PALB2, ATM, and CHEK2 are associated with breast cancer risk. FANCM, which encodes for a DNA translocase, has been proposed as a breast cancer predisposition gene, with greater effects for the ER-negative and triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) subtypes. We tested the three recurrent protein-truncating variants FANCM:p.Arg658*, p.Gln1701*, and p.Arg1931* for association with breast cancer risk in 67,112 cases, 53,766 controls, and 26,662 carriers of pathogenic variants of BRCA1 or BRCA2. These three variants were also studied functionally by measuring survival and chromosome fragility in FANCM−/− patient-derived immortalized fibroblasts treated with diepoxybutane or olaparib. We observed that FANCM:p.Arg658* was associated with increased risk of ER-negative disease and TNBC (OR = 2.44, P = 0.034 and OR = 3.79; P = 0.009, respectively). In a country-restricted analysis, we confirmed the associations detected for FANCM:p.Arg658* and found that also FANCM:p.Arg1931* was associated with ER-negative breast cancer risk (OR = 1.96; P = 0.006). The functional results indicated that all three variants were deleterious affecting cell survival and chromosome stability with FANCM:p.Arg658* causing more severe phenotypes. In conclusion, we confirmed that the two rare FANCM deleterious variants p.Arg658* and p.Arg1931* are risk factors for ER-negative and TNBC subtypes. Overall our data suggest that the effect of truncating variants on breast cancer risk may depend on their position in the gene.
