Synthesis of 13C—O-labelled tertiary alkanoic acids by the Koch-haaf-reaction

Good yields of tertiary alkanoic acids are obtained from the Koch-Haaf-synthesis even when only stoichiometric amounts of carbinol and HCOOH are used. This offers a new approach to 13CO-labelled tertiary alkanoic acids. - An excess of HCOOH is generally used in the Koch-Haaf-synthesis1) of carboxylic acids from carbinols and HCOOH in conc. H2SO4

Gezielte Synthese von Homoadamantan-1- oder -3- carbonsäure durch Koch-Haaf -Synthese

1-Adamantylmethanol (1) liefert in der Koch-Haaf-Synthese bei 25°C in 63 h Reaktionszeit reine Homoadamantan-1- carbonsäure (4), bei -15°C in kürzerer Reaktionszeit hingegen rein Homoadamantan-3-carbonsäure (3). Die beiden Säuren wurden mit Methyllithium in die 1-oder 3-Homoadamantylmethylketone (9 bzw. 7) übergeführt, die in der analytischen Gas-Chromatographie aufgetrennt werden konnten. Durch Baeyer-Villiger-Umlagerung von 9 und 7 mit Trifluorperessigsäure wurden Homoadamantan-1- und -3-ol (10 und 8) dargestellt. Die Analyse der 1H-NMR-Spektren von 7-10 mit Shift-Reagenzien sichert die Strukturzuordnungen. Es wird gefolgert, daß Homoadamantan-3-carbonsäure (3) unter den Bedingungen der Koch-Haaf-Synthese zu Homoadamantan-1- carbonsäure (4) über einen Komplexen Mechanismus isomerisiert, der der Klärung bedarf

Novel asymmetric formylation of aromatic compounds: Enantioselective synthesis of formyl 7,8- dipropyltetrathia[7]helicenes

Asymmetric formylation of aromatic compounds is virtually unexplored. We report the synthesis and evaluation of a library including 20 new chiral formamides in the kinetic resolution of 7,8-dipropyltetrathia[7]helicene, affording the corresponding formyl- or diformylhelicenes in up to 73% ee, making enantiopure compounds available by recrystallisation. With the N,N-disubstituted formamides used in this study, the best enantioselectivity has been achieved with R1=iPr, R2=Me, R3=H, R4=1-naphthyl or its 1-pyrenyl equivalent
