Parental attitudes and the way to the young students' independence.
Typ ojców wspierających autonomię współwystępuje z zaspokojeniem potrzeby autonomii, a matki dodatkowo z zaspokojeniem potrzeb kompetencji, relacji oraz satysfakcji z życia.Parental involvement is associated with many positive child outcomes, but it has to be adequate to the level of the child’s development. Some studies have examined the existence of the phenomenon of overcontrolling parents called helicopter parents (Cline, Fay, 1990). The aim of my study was to increase knowledge about the way to the young students' independence and discover the role of helicopter parents and autonomy supportive parents in this process. Cracovian students (N=116) completed measures of helicopter parents, autonomy supportive parents, parental attitudes, basic psychological need satisfaction and satisfaction with life. The result of the research proved that daughters more often that sons claimed to have helicopter mothers and autonomy supportive parents. Helicopter parents weren’t linked with positive effect on psychological needs of autonomy, competence, relatedness and satisfaction with life. Autonomy supportive mothers were associated with basic psychological need satisfaction and satisfaction with life
Integration of Biological Dynamic and 'Phylogenetic Trees' of Living Beeings
Since Darwin, a genetic continuity of morphological and behavioral traits between all living beings has been taken for granted. This paper describes eight irreducible classes of descriptive traits on the basis of the presence or absence of (a) repetitivity, (b) correlation with natural environment properties and (c) inner integration. It is argued that some of these classes should neither be used in taxonomy nor in phylogenetic reconstructions. The remaining classes imply an inner dynamic indivisibility on the one hand, and an evident relation to the concept of the reaction norm on the other. These implications, in turn, may lead to the recognition of much broader „natural species” units which embrace forms usually grouped within a genus or family. Morphological and behavioral gaps between such „natural species” have to be considered in relation to the rather mysterious developmental, integrative and adaptive potential of a particular natural species. Paleontological data seem to confirm the existence of such gaps. This introduces a serious objection to the theory of common descent and to the cognitive utility of the macro- and megaevolutionary „phylogenetic trees.

High Latitude Changes in Ice Dynamics and Their Impact on Polar Marine Ecosystems
Polar regions have experienced significant warming in recent decades. Warming has been most pronounced across the Arctic Ocean Basin and along the Antarctic Peninsula, with significant decreases in the extent and seasonal duration of sea ice. Rapid retreat of glaciers and disintegration of ice sheets have also been documented. The rate of warming is increasing and is predicted to continue well into the current century, with continued impacts on ice dynamics. Climate-mediated changes in ice dynamics are a concern as ice serves as primary habitat for marine organisms central to the food webs of these regions. Changes in the timing and extent of sea ice impose temporal asynchronies and spatial separations between energy requirements and food availability for many higher trophic levels. These mismatches lead to decreased reproductive success, lower abundances, and changes in distribution. In addition to these direct impacts of ice loss, climate-induced changes also facilitate indirect effects through changes in hydrography, which include introduction of species from lower latitudes and altered assemblages of primary producers. Here, we review recent changes and trends in ice dynamics and the responses of marine ecosystems. Specifically, we provide examples of ice-dependent organisms and associated species from the Arctic and Antarctic to illustrate the impacts of the temporal and spatial changes in ice dynamics
Feeding in Arctic darkness: mid-winter diet of the pelagic amphipods Themisto abyssorum and T. libellula
The pelagic amphipods Themisto abyssorum
and Themisto libellula represent important links between the
herbivore zooplankton community and higher trophic levels
of the Arctic marine food webs. Large double structured
eyes of both of these hyperiid species are assumed to be used
for visual prey detection. However, no information is
available on the feeding strategies of these visually searching
predators for the period of the polar night, a time of year
with no or very low levels of daylight. Here, we report on the
stomach and gut content of both Themisto species collected
during a January expedition around Svalbard (78° to 81°N).
Results indicate that T. abyssorum and T. libellula feed
actively during the Arctic winter. The major food source of
both amphipods consisted of calanoid copepods, most frequently
Calanus finmarchicus
