A rule based expert system to advise on air-filtering plants for indoor spaces in UAE

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was the development of an expert system that is able to recommend types of plants for the removal of toxic substances in a given artificial ecosystem. The domain was restricted to office environments within the United Arab Emirates (UAE). A literature review revealed a significant gap in research related to systems that help select plants based on a given environment. This eventually led to the creation of the Plant Recommender Expert System (PRES). PRES utilizes a set of inputs (for example expected humidity, average temperature, light quality, etc.). The system will then recommend the type(s) of plants that should be purchased to suit the given environment conditions. Horticultural experts usually give recommendations for these types of problem domains but such an expert may not always be available, and so the concept here is to encode the expertise knowledge in an intelligent system to ensure uninterrupted availability of the expert knowledge. The system was evaluated using several case studies with known outcomes. The PRES suggested plants for environments that were described via a set of inputs in these trials. The initial phase, being a prototype of PRES was created with the aim of helping non-expert users leverage the natural air-detoxification properties of plants. While in its current configuration the system is not capable of learning, it can at a later stage be integrated with other AI methods such as the use of decision trees to create further rules or data driven approaches such as the use of Neural Networks for the classification of plants relevant to a given domain. However, the latter approach will first necessitate the creation of a relevant data set

Pulsar timing arrays and the challenge of massive black hole binary astrophysics

Pulsar timing arrays (PTAs) are designed to detect gravitational waves (GWs) at nHz frequencies. The expected dominant signal is given by the superposition of all waves emitted by the cosmological population of supermassive black hole (SMBH) binaries. Such superposition creates an incoherent stochastic background, on top of which particularly bright or nearby sources might be individually resolved. In this contribution I describe the properties of the expected GW signal, highlighting its dependence on the overall binary population, the relation between SMBHs and their hosts, and their coupling with the stellar and gaseous environment. I describe the status of current PTA efforts, and prospect of future detection and SMBH binary astrophysics.Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures. We show that the relatively large best fit value of sin^22\u3b813=0.14(0.17) measured in the T2K experiment for fixed values of i) the Dirac CP violation phase \u3b4=0, and ii) the atmospheric neutrino mixing parameters \u3b8(23)=\u3c0/4, |\u394m^2(32)|=2.4 710^{ 123} eV^2, can be reconciled with the Daya Bay result sin^22\u3b8(13)=0.090\ub10.009 if the effects of non-standard neutrino interactions (NSI) in the relevant \u3bd\uafe\u2192\u3bd\uafe and \u3bd\u3bc\u2192\u3bde oscillation probabilities are taken into account. \ua9 2014 The Authors

Large-scale Bright Fronts in the Solar Corona: A Review of "EIT waves"

``EIT waves" are large-scale coronal bright fronts (CBFs) that were first observed in 195 \AA\ images obtained using the Extreme-ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (EIT) onboard the \emph{Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO)}. Commonly called ``EIT waves", CBFs typically appear as diffuse fronts that propagate pseudo-radially across the solar disk at velocities of 100--700 km s1^{-1} with front widths of 50-100 Mm. As their speed is greater than the quiet coronal sound speed (csc_s\leq200 km s1^{-1}) and comparable to the local Alfv\'{e}n speed (vAv_A\leq1000 km s1^{-1}), they were initially interpreted as fast-mode magnetoacoustic waves (vf=(cs2+vA2)1/2v_{f}=(c_s^2 + v_A^2)^{1/2}). Their propagation is now known to be modified by regions where the magnetosonic sound speed varies, such as active regions and coronal holes, but there is also evidence for stationary CBFs at coronal hole boundaries. The latter has led to the suggestion that they may be a manifestation of a processes such as Joule heating or magnetic reconnection, rather than a wave-related phenomena. While the general morphological and kinematic properties of CBFs and their association with coronal mass ejections have now been well described, there are many questions regarding their excitation and propagation. In particular, the theoretical interpretation of these enigmatic events as magnetohydrodynamic waves or due to changes in magnetic topology remains the topic of much debate.Comment: 34 pages, 19 figure

On the Nature and Genesis of EUV Waves: A Synthesis of Observations from SOHO, STEREO, SDO, and Hinode

A major, albeit serendipitous, discovery of the SOlar and Heliospheric Observatory mission was the observation by the Extreme Ultraviolet Telescope (EIT) of large-scale Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) intensity fronts propagating over a significant fraction of the Sun's surface. These so-called EIT or EUV waves are associated with eruptive phenomena and have been studied intensely. However, their wave nature has been challenged by non-wave (or pseudo-wave) interpretations and the subject remains under debate. A string of recent solar missions has provided a wealth of detailed EUV observations of these waves bringing us closer to resolving their nature. With this review, we gather the current state-of-art knowledge in the field and synthesize it into a picture of an EUV wave driven by the lateral expansion of the CME. This picture can account for both wave and pseudo-wave interpretations of the observations, thus resolving the controversy over the nature of EUV waves to a large degree but not completely. We close with a discussion of several remaining open questions in the field of EUV waves research.Comment: Solar Physics, Special Issue "The Sun in 360",2012, accepted for publicatio

Development of corn seedlings after a period of exposition to various water potential

    Get PDF
Fungicide treated and untreated corn seeds were sets to germinate under varying water availability conditions (0 to -12atm water potential). The seedlings obtained on each individual treatment were subsequently grown under ideal available water conditions. The results permitted to conclude that the occurrence of a water deficit during the on set of the germination process results in reductions on the length of the embryonic structures, particularly the epicotil. This effect attenuates with times due to the increase in growth velocity in environments where water potential is lower. Fungicid treated seeds, did not appear to be consistently vantageous in environments with water stress.

The present paper considers the possible effects of physiological pre-treatment during the beginning of corn seeds germination in environments variable as to water availability (0 to -12 atm ). Periods of defficiency followed by 5 days without hydric limitations were compared with a control that remained equally, without reservations as to the disposability of water during 5 days. Results indicated that hydric pre-treatment of seeds can, if property adapted in its details, provide some advantages in the development of the seedlings derived from them. Chemical fungicide treatment of the seeds, submmited to the hydric pre-treatment may not be beneficial to the seedlings; as indicated by, in some isolated cases, the production of abnormalities in the embryonic structures.O presente trabalho buscou estimar os eventuais efeitos de pré-condicionamento fisiológico promovidos, durante o início da germinação das sementes de milho, por ambientes variáveis quanto à disponibilidade de água (0 a -12 atm).

Anisotropic flow of charged hadrons, pions and (anti-)protons measured at high transverse momentum in Pb-Pb collisions at sNN=2.76\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=2.76 TeV

The elliptic, v2v_2, triangular, v3v_3, and quadrangular, v4v_4, azimuthal anisotropic flow coefficients are measured for unidentified charged particles, pions and (anti-)protons in Pb-Pb collisions at sNN=2.76\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 2.76 TeV with the ALICE detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Results obtained with the event plane and four-particle cumulant methods are reported for the pseudo-rapidity range η<0.8|\eta|<0.8 at different collision centralities and as a function of transverse momentum, pTp_{\rm T}, out to pT=20p_{\rm T}=20 GeV/cc. The observed non-zero elliptic and triangular flow depends only weakly on transverse momentum for pT>8p_{\rm T}>8 GeV/cc. The small pTp_{\rm T} dependence of the difference between elliptic flow results obtained from the event plane and four-particle cumulant methods suggests a common origin of flow fluctuations up to pT=8p_{\rm T}=8 GeV/cc. The magnitude of the (anti-)proton elliptic and triangular flow is larger than that of pions out to at least pT=8p_{\rm T}=8 GeV/cc indicating that the particle type dependence persists out to high pTp_{\rm T}.Comment: 16 pages, 5 captioned figures, authors from page 11, published version, figures at http://aliceinfo.cern.ch/ArtSubmission/node/186
