    Remote Predictive Mapping 1. Remote Predictive Mapping (RPM): A Strategy for Geological Mapping of Canada’s North

    Remote Predictive Mapping (RPM) techniques are being developed and refined by the Geological Survey of Canada for mapping Canada’s North. Remote Predictive Mapping should be considered an integral part of the geological mapping process designed to involve compilation, and re-compilation of data derived from existing geological maps, aerial photographs, satellite imagery, and airborne geophysical data. Predictive geological maps may be iteratively revised and upgraded to publishable geological maps by integrating remotely sensed data with newly acquired field and laboratory data, as RPM techniques are progressively tested and insight evolves. A predictive map, produced without collection of new, field-based data, may also serve as a first-order geologic map in areas where field-based studies cannot be accomplished due to expense of field access or remoteness. As a welcome consequence of adopting RPM into the normal work flow of any mapping or exploration project, there will, by necessity, be greater participation and integration of expertise of field geologists, geophysicists, Geographic Information System (GIS) and remote sensing specialists. Significantly, RPM also encourages geoscience organizations to make full use of all available geoscience data. This paper outlines a strategy for RPM and provides processing and interpretation examples based on a variety of geoscience data and interpretation techniques to be employed for geologic mapping. La tĂ©lĂ©cartographie prĂ©dictive doit ĂȘtre perçue comme une composante intĂ©grĂ©e d’un processus de cartographie gĂ©ologique de compilation et de recompilation de donnĂ©es extraites de cartes gĂ©ologiques, de photographies aĂ©riennes, d’imageries satellitaires, et de gĂ©ophysiques aĂ©roportĂ©es existantes.     The Implementation of Families First in the Netherlands: A One Year Follow-up [IF: 0.725]

Data were collected on 250 children of 177 families who received Families First. At the start of treatment 78% of the children appeared to have serious behavioral problems, 67% of the parents experienced a high level of parental stress, and 63% of the children went through a substantial number of life events during the year preceding the treatment. On average the treatments had the intended duration (about 4 weeks), intensity (about 10 hours a week) and availability (during working hours as well as in evenings and in weekends), and family workers did adhere to important guidelines of treatment delivery. One year after treatment 76% of the children were still living at home. Moreover, children's behavioral problems, parental stress and the number of life events turned out to be significantly decreased. It was concluded that Families First had reached its intended target group, delivered the treatment as intended, and achieved its intended outcomes, suggesting a successful implementation in the Netherlands

    Calcium-sensing receptor autoantibody-mediated hypoparathyroidism associated with immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy : diagnosis and long-term follow-up

    Background Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have produced significant survival benefit across many tumor types. However, immune-related adverse events are common including autoimmune responses against different endocrine organs. Here, a case of ICI-mediated hypoparathyroidism focusing on long-term follow-up and insights into its etiology is presented. Case and methods A 73-year-old man developed severe symptomatic hypocalcemia after the initiation of ipilimumab and nivolumab for the treatment of metastatic melanoma. Hypoparathyroidism was diagnosed with undetectable intact parathyroid hormone (PTH). Immunoprecipitation assays, ELISAs, and cell-based functional assays were used to test the patient for antibodies against the calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR). NACHT leucine-rich repeat protein 5 (NALP5) and cytokine antibodies were measured in radioligand binding assays and ELISAs, respectively. Results The patient’s symptoms improved with aggressive calcium and vitamin D supplementation. At 3 years and 3 months since the diagnosis of hypoparathyroidism, PTH was still inappropriately low at 7.6 pg/mL, and attempted discontinuation of calcium and calcitriol resulted in recurrent symptomatic hypocalcemia. Analysis for an autoimmune etiology of the patient’s hypoparathyroidism indicated that CaSR antibodies were negative before treatment and detected at multiple time points afterwards, and corresponded to the patient’s clinical course of hypoparathyroidism. CaSR antibodies purified from the patient’s serum activated the human CaSR. The patient was seronegative for NALP5 and cytokine antibodies, indicating that their hypoparathyroidism was not a manifestation of autoimmune polyendocrine syndrome type 1. Conclusion The etiology of hypocalcemia is likely autoimmune hypoparathyroidism caused by the development of CaSR-activating antibodies that might prevent PTH release from the parathyroid

    Humoral Autoimmune Responses to the Squamous Cell Carcinoma Antigen Protein Family in Psoriasis

    Substantial evidence indicates that psoriasis is a T-lymphocyte-mediated autoimmune disease. However, longstanding data also indicate IgG and complement deposition in upper epidermis of psoriasis plaques. This led us to propose that autoantigen–autoantibody interactions in the skin may also be of pathogenic importance. Here, we have confirmed the presence of IgG in upper lesional epidermis and used high-resolution two-dimensional immunoblotting of extracts from this tissue, and laser desorption mass spectrometry of tryptic peptides, to define a series of epidermal proteins that bind IgG from psoriatic serum. The most prominent of these autoantigens are homologues of the serpin, squamous cell carcinoma antigen (SCCA), the other autoantigens identified including arginase 1, enolase 1, and keratin 10. Blood levels of IgG autoantibodies that bind to SCCA proteins were significantly higher in psoriasis than healthy controls (P=0.005), but were not detectable in sera from patients with active atopic dermatitis. To our knowledge, SCCA proteins have not previously been described as autoantigenic in animals or humans and form complexes with IgG that are associated with complement deposition. These findings expose potentially pathogenic humoral immunologic events and thus possible therapeutic targets in psoriasis

    An Integrated TCGA Pan-Cancer Clinical Data Resource to Drive High-Quality Survival Outcome Analytics

    For a decade, The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) program collected clinicopathologic annotation data along with multi-platform molecular profiles of more than 11,000 human tumors across 33 different cancer types. TCGA clinical data contain key features representing the democratized nature of the data collection process. To ensure proper use of this large clinical dataset associated with genomic features, we developed a standardized dataset named the TCGA Pan-Cancer Clinical Data Resource (TCGA-CDR), which includes four major clinical outcome endpoints. In addition to detailing major challenges and statistical limitations encountered during the effort of integrating the acquired clinical data, we present a summary that includes endpoint usage recommendations for each cancer type. These TCGA-CDR findings appear to be consistent with cancer genomics studies independent of the TCGA effort and provide opportunities for investigating cancer biology using clinical correlates at an unprecedented scale. Analysis of clinicopathologic annotations for over 11,000 cancer patients in the TCGA program leads to the generation of TCGA Clinical Data Resource, which provides recommendations of clinical outcome endpoint usage for 33 cancer types

    Anisotropy studies around the galactic centre at EeV energies with the Auger Observatory

    Data from the Pierre Auger Observatory are analyzed to search for anisotropies near the direction of the Galactic Centre at EeV energies. The exposure of the surface array in this part of the sky is already significantly larger than that of the fore-runner experiments. Our results do not support previous findings of localized excesses in the AGASA and SUGAR data. We set an upper bound on a point-like flux of cosmic rays arriving from the Galactic Centre which excludes several scenarios predicting sources of EeV neutrons from Sagittarius AA. Also the events detected simultaneously by the surface and fluorescence detectors (the `hybrid' data set), which have better pointing accuracy but are less numerous than those of the surface array alone, do not show any significant localized excess from this direction.Comment: Matches published versio

    Atmospheric effects on extensive air showers observed with the Surface Detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory

    Atmospheric parameters, such as pressure (P), temperature (T) and density, affect the development of extensive air showers initiated by energetic cosmic rays. We have studied the impact of atmospheric variations on extensive air showers by means of the surface detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory. The rate of events shows a ~10% seasonal modulation and ~2% diurnal one. We find that the observed behaviour is explained by a model including the effects associated with the variations of pressure and density. The former affects the longitudinal development of air showers while the latter influences the Moliere radius and hence the lateral distribution of the shower particles. The model is validated with full simulations of extensive air showers using atmospheric profiles measured at the site of the Pierre Auger Observatory.Comment: 24 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in Astroparticle Physic

    The exposure of the hybrid detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory

    The Pierre Auger Observatory is a detector for ultra-high energy cosmic rays. It consists of a surface array to measure secondary particles at ground level and a fluorescence detector to measure the development of air showers in the atmosphere above the array. The "hybrid" detection mode combines the information from the two subsystems. We describe the determination of the hybrid exposure for events observed by the fluorescence telescopes in coincidence with at least one water-Cherenkov detector of the surface array. A detailed knowledge of the time dependence of the detection operations is crucial for an accurate evaluation of the exposure. We discuss the relevance of monitoring data collected during operations, such as the status of the fluorescence detector, background light and atmospheric conditions, that are used in both simulation and reconstruction.Comment: Paper accepted by Astroparticle Physic
