Elastic Nd scattering at intermediate energies as a tool for probing the short-range deuteron structure
A calculation of the deuteron polarization observables , ,
, and the differential cross-section for elastic
nucleon-deuteron scattering at incident deuteron energies 270 and 880 MeV in
lab is presented. A comparison of the calculations with two different deuteron
wave-functions derived from the Bonn-CD -potential model and the dressed
bag quark model is carried out. A model-independent approach, based on an
optical potential framework, is used in which a nucleon-nucleon -matrix is
assumed to be local and taken on the energy shell, but still depends on the
internal nucleon momentum in a deuteron.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figure
Cross-sections of large-angle hadron production in proton- and pion-nucleus interactions VI: carbon nuclei and beam momenta from \pm 3 GeV/c to \pm 15 GeV/c
We report on double-differential inclusive cross-sections of the production
of secondary protons, charged pions, and deuterons, in the interactions with a
5% nuclear interaction length thick stationary carbon target, of proton and
pion beams with momentum from \pm 3 GeV/c to \pm 15 GeV/c. Results are given
for secondary particles with production angles between 20 and 125 degrees.
Cross-sections on carbon nuclei are compared with cross-sections on beryllium,

Evidence for muon neutrino oscillation in an accelerator-based experiment
We present results for muon neutrino oscillation in the KEK to Kamioka (K2K)
long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. K2K uses an accelerator-produced
muon neutrino beam with a mean energy of 1.3 GeV directed at the
Super-Kamiokande detector. We observed the energy dependent disappearance of
muon neutrino, which we presume have oscillated to tau neutrino. The
probability that we would observe these results if there is no neutrino
oscillation is 0.0050% (4.0 sigma).Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Multidimensional Conservation Laws: Overview, Problems, and Perspective
Some of recent important developments are overviewed, several longstanding
open problems are discussed, and a perspective is presented for the
mathematical theory of multidimensional conservation laws. Some basic features
and phenomena of multidimensional hyperbolic conservation laws are revealed,
and some samples of multidimensional systems/models and related important
problems are presented and analyzed with emphasis on the prototypes that have
been solved or may be expected to be solved rigorously at least for some cases.
In particular, multidimensional steady supersonic problems and transonic
problems, shock reflection-diffraction problems, and related effective
nonlinear approaches are analyzed. A theory of divergence-measure vector fields
and related analytical frameworks for the analysis of entropy solutions are

VERTIGO (VERtical Transport In the Global Ocean) : a study of particle sources and flux attenuation in the North Pacific

fluxes through the ocean’s “twilight zone” (defined here as depths below the euphotic zone to
1000 m). Interdisciplinary process studies were conducted at contrasting sites off Hawaii
(ALOHA) and in the NW Pacific (K2) during 3 week occupations in 2004 and 2005, respectively.
We examine in this overview paper the contrasting physical, chemical and biological settings and
how these conditions impact the source characteristics of the sinking material and the transport
efficiency through the twilight zone. A major finding in VERTIGO is the considerably lower
transfer efficiency (Teff) of particulate organic carbon (POC), POC flux 500 / 150 m, at ALOHA
(20%) vs. K2 (50%). This efficiency is higher in the diatom-dominated setting at K2 where
silica-rich particles dominate the flux at the end of a diatom bloom, and where zooplankton and
their pellets are larger. At K2, the drawdown of macronutrients is used to assess export and
suggests that shallow remineralization above our 150 m trap is significant, especially for N
relative to Si. We explore here also surface export ratios (POC flux/primary production) and
possible reasons why this ratio is higher at K2, especially during the first trap deployment. When
we compare the 500 m fluxes to deep moored traps, both sites lose about half of the sinking POC
by >4000 m, but this comparison is limited in that fluxes at depth may have both a local and
distant component. Certainly, the greatest difference in particle flux attenuation is in the
mesopelagic, and we highlight other VERTIGO papers that provide a more detailed examination
of the particle sources, flux and processes that attenuate the flux of sinking particles. Ultimately,
we contend that at least three types of processes need to be considered: heterotrophic degradation
of sinking particles, zooplankton migration and surface feeding, and lateral sources of suspended
and sinking materials. We have evidence that all of these processes impacted the net attenuation
of particle flux vs. depth measured in VERTIGO and would therefore need to be considered and
quantified in order to understand the magnitude and efficiency of the ocean’s biological pump.Funding for VERTIGO was provided primarily by research grants

Risk profiles and one-year outcomes of patients with newly diagnosed atrial fibrillation in India: Insights from the GARFIELD-AF Registry.
BACKGROUND: The Global Anticoagulant Registry in the FIELD-Atrial Fibrillation (GARFIELD-AF) is an ongoing prospective noninterventional registry, which is providing important information on the baseline characteristics, treatment patterns, and 1-year outcomes in patients with newly diagnosed non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF). This report describes data from Indian patients recruited in this registry. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 52,014 patients with newly diagnosed AF were enrolled globally; of these, 1388 patients were recruited from 26 sites within India (2012-2016). In India, the mean age was 65.8 years at diagnosis of NVAF. Hypertension was the most prevalent risk factor for AF, present in 68.5% of patients from India and in 76.3% of patients globally (P < 0.001). Diabetes and coronary artery disease (CAD) were prevalent in 36.2% and 28.1% of patients as compared with global prevalence of 22.2% and 21.6%, respectively (P < 0.001 for both). Antiplatelet therapy was the most common antithrombotic treatment in India. With increasing stroke risk, however, patients were more likely to receive oral anticoagulant therapy [mainly vitamin K antagonist (VKA)], but average international normalized ratio (INR) was lower among Indian patients [median INR value 1.6 (interquartile range {IQR}: 1.3-2.3) versus 2.3 (IQR 1.8-2.8) (P < 0.001)]. Compared with other countries, patients from India had markedly higher rates of all-cause mortality [7.68 per 100 person-years (95% confidence interval 6.32-9.35) vs 4.34 (4.16-4.53), P < 0.0001], while rates of stroke/systemic embolism and major bleeding were lower after 1 year of follow-up. CONCLUSION: Compared to previously published registries from India, the GARFIELD-AF registry describes clinical profiles and outcomes in Indian patients with AF of a different etiology. The registry data show that compared to the rest of the world, Indian AF patients are younger in age and have more diabetes and CAD. Patients with a higher stroke risk are more likely to receive anticoagulation therapy with VKA but are underdosed compared with the global average in the GARFIELD-AF. Low collectivity of the first 2⁺ states of ²¹²,²¹⁰Po
The lifetimes of the first 2⁺ excited states of ²¹²,²¹⁰Po were measured in two transfer reactions ²⁰⁸Pb(¹²C,⁸Be)²¹²Po and ²⁰⁸Pb(¹²C,¹⁰Be)²¹⁰Po by the Recoil Distance Doppler Shift (RDDS) method and by the Doppler Shift Attenuation method (DSAM), respectively. The derived absolute B(E2) values of 2.6(3) W.u. for ²¹²Po and 1.83(28) W.u. for ²¹⁰Po indicate low collectivity. It is shown that the properties of the yrast 2₁⁺, 4₁⁺, 6₁⁺ and 8₁⁺ states in both nuclei cannot be described consistently in the framework of nuclear shell models. It is also demonstrated in the case of ²¹⁰Po that Quasi-particle Phonon Model (QPM) calculations cannot overcome this problem thus indicating the existence of a peculiarity which is neglected in both theoretical approaches
