    A survey on the model-centered approaches to conceptual modeling of IoT systems

    Internet of Things (IoT) is a system of connected objects, entities, devices, and components which share and transfer data over a network. Many papers are published on the topic of conceptual models in the IoT context, but it is difficult to assess the current status of the conceptual modeling approaches and methods for IoT systems. This paper presents an overview of the state of the art as well as discusses fundamental concepts, challenges and current research gaps with potential future agenda for conceptual modeling of IoT. Search facilities in the selected online repositories were used to identify the most relevant papers. The primary results were scanned and papers were selected according to the inclusion/exclusion criteria. Selected papers were assessed to extract data for the defined attributes. This paper confirms that there is a large body of research related to modeling of IoT systems. However, the results show that there is a lack of commonly agreed approaches and supporting formal methods for conceptual modeling of IoT systems. On the other hand, recent studies that apply model-based or model-driven development principles that use ontology or metamodel based approaches are promising due to systematic use of models as the primary means of a development process enabling for the dissemination of the methods further to the emerging fields such as smart cities, factories, transportation, hospitals, healthcare, hospitality and tourism, etc

    Effect of a short-term low fermentable oligosaccharide disaccharide, monosaccharide and polyol (FODMAP) diet on exercise-related gastrointestinal symptoms

    Background: Research has demonstrated that low fermentable oligosaccharide disaccharide monosaccharide and polyol (FODMAP) diets improve gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms in irritable bowel syndrome sufferers. Exercise-related GI issues are a common cause of underperformance, with current evidence focusing on the use of FODMAP approaches with recreationally competitive or highly trained athletes. However, there is a paucity of research exploring the potential benefit of FODMAP strategies to support healthy, recreational athletes who experience GI issues during training. This study therefore aimed to assess whether a short-term LOWFODMAP diet improved exercise-related GI symptoms and the perceived ability to exercise in recreational runners. Methods: Sixteen healthy volunteers were randomly assigned in a crossover design manner to either a LOWFODMAP (16.06 ± 1.79 g·d-1) or HIGHFODMAP (38.65 ± 6.66 g·d-1) diet for 7 days, with a one week washout period followed by a further 7 days on the alternate diet. Participants rated their gastrointestinal symptoms on an adapted version of the Irritable Bowel Syndrome-Severity Scoring System (IBS-SSS) questionnaire before and at the end of each dietary period. Perceived ability to exercise (frequency, intensity and duration) in relation to each dietary period was also rated using a visual analogue scale. Resting blood samples were collected prior to and on completion of each diet to determine plasma intestinal fatty acid binding protein (I-FABP) as a marker of acute GI injury. Results: Overall IBS-SSS score significantly reduced in the LOWFODMAP condition from 81.1±16.4 to 31.3±9.2 (arbitrary units; P = 0.004). Perceived exercise frequency (z = 2.309, P = 0.02) and intensity (z = 2.687, P = 0.007) was significantly improved following a short-term LOWFODMAP approach compared to HIGHFODMAP. No significant differences were reported between dietary conditions for plasma I-FABP (P>0.05). Conclusions: A short-term LOWFODMAP diet under free-living conditions reduced exercise-related GI symptoms and improved the perceived ability to exercise in otherwise healthy, recreational runners. These findings may be explained by a reduction in indigestible carbohydrates available for fermentation in the gut. The therapeutic benefits of LOWFODMAP diets in recreational and trained athletes during sustained training periods warrants further investigation

    High-level feature extraction for crowd behaviour analysis: a computer vision approach

    The advent of deep learning has brought in disruptive techniques with unprecedented accuracy rates in so many fields and scenarios. Tasks such as the detection of regions of interest and semantic features out of images and video sequences are quite effectively tackled because of the availability of publicly available and adequately annotated datasets. This paper describes a use case scenario with a deep learning models’ stack being used for crowd behaviour analysis. It consists of two main modules preceded by a pre-processing step. The first deep learning module relies on the integration of YOLOv5 and DeepSORT to detect and track down pedestrians from CCTV cameras’ video sequences. The second module ingests each pedestrian’s spatial coordinates, velocity, and trajectories to cluster groups of people using the Coherent Neighbor Invariance technique. The method envisages the acquisition of video sequences from cameras overlooking pedestrian areas, such as public parks or squares, in order to check out any possible unusualness in crowd behaviour. Due to its design, the system first checks whether some anomalies are underway at the microscale level. Secondly, It returns clusters of people at the mesoscale level depending on velocity and trajectories.     The Wasteland of Random Supergravities

    We show that in a general \cal{N} = 1 supergravity with N \gg 1 scalar fields, an exponentially small fraction of the de Sitter critical points are metastable vacua. Taking the superpotential and Kahler potential to be random functions, we construct a random matrix model for the Hessian matrix, which is well-approximated by the sum of a Wigner matrix and two Wishart matrices. We compute the eigenvalue spectrum analytically from the free convolution of the constituent spectra and find that in typical configurations, a significant fraction of the eigenvalues are negative. Building on the Tracy-Widom law governing fluctuations of extreme eigenvalues, we determine the probability P of a large fluctuation in which all the eigenvalues become positive. Strong eigenvalue repulsion makes this extremely unlikely: we find P \propto exp(-c N^p), with c, p being constants. For generic critical points we find p \approx 1.5, while for approximately-supersymmetric critical points, p \approx 1.3. Our results have significant implications for the counting of de Sitter vacua in string theory, but the number of vacua remains vast.Comment: 39 pages, 9 figures; v2: fixed typos, added refs and clarification

    Blood Pressure and Arterial Stiffness in Kenyan Adolescents With α+Thalassemia.

    BACKGROUND: Recent studies have discovered that α-globin is expressed in blood vessel walls where it plays a role in regulating vascular tone. We tested the hypothesis that blood pressure (BP) might differ between normal individuals and those with α+thalassemia, in whom the production of α-globin is reduced. METHODS AND RESULTS: The study was conducted in Nairobi, Kenya, among 938 adolescents aged 11 to 17 years. Twenty-four-hour ambulatory BP monitoring and arterial stiffness measurements were performed using an arteriograph device. We genotyped for α+thalassemia by polymerase chain reaction. Complete data for analysis were available for 623 subjects; 223 (36%) were heterozygous (-α/αα) and 47 (8%) were homozygous (-α/-α) for α+thalassemia whereas the remaining 353 (55%) were normal (αα/αα). Mean 24-hour systolic BP ±SD was 118±12 mm Hg in αα/αα, 117±11 mm Hg in -α/αα, and 118±11 mm Hg in -α/-α subjects, respectively. Mean 24-hour diastolic BP ±SD in these groups was 64±8, 63±7, and 65±8 mm Hg, respectively. Mean pulse wave velocity (PWV)±SD was 7±0.8, 7±0.8, and 7±0.7 ms-1, respectively. No differences were observed in PWV and any of the 24-hour ambulatory BP monitoring-derived measures between those with and without α+thalassemia. CONCLUSIONS: These data suggest that the presence of α+thalassemia does not affect BP and/or arterial stiffness in Kenyan adolescents

    The effect of two β-alanine dosing strategies on 30-minute rowing performance: a randomized, controlled trial

    Background: β-alanine (βA) supplementation has been shown to increase intramuscular carnosine content and subsequent high-intensity performance in events lasting <4 minutes, which may be dependent on total, as opposed to daily, dose. The ergogenic effect of βA has also been demonstrated for 2000-m rowing performance prompting interest in whether βA may be beneficial for sustained aerobic exercise. This study therefore investigated the effect of two βA dosing strategies on 30-minute rowing and subsequent sprint performance. Methods: Following University Ethics approval, twenty-seven healthy, male rowers (age: 24±2 years; body-height: 1.81±0.02m; body-mass: 82.3±2.5kg; body-fat: 14.2±1.0%) were randomised in a double-blind manner to 4 weeks of: i) βA (2.4 g·d-1, βA1); ii) matched total βA (4.8g on alternate days, βA2); or iii) cornflour placebo (2.4 g·d-1, PL). Participants completed a laboratory 30-minute rowing time-trial, followed by 3x30s maximal sprint efforts at days 0, 14 and 28 (T1-T3). Total distance (m), average power (W), relative average power (W·kg-1), cardio-respiratory measures and perceived exertion were assessed for each 10-minute split. Blood lactate ([La-]b mmol·L-1) was monitored pre-post time-trial and following maximal sprint efforts. A 3-way repeated measures ANOVA was employed for main analyses, with Bonferonni post-hoc assessment (P≤0.05). Results: Total 30-minute time-trial distance significantly increased from T1-T3 within βA1 only (7397±195m to 7580±171m, P=0.002, ƞp2 = 0.196), including absolute average power (194.8±18.3W to 204.2±15.5W, P=0.04, ƞp2=0.115) and relative average power output (2.28±0.15W·kg-1 to 2.41±0.12W·kg-1, P=0.031, ƞp2= 0.122). These findings were potentially explained by within-group significance for the same variables for the first 10 minute split (P≤0.01), and for distance covered (P=0.01) in the second 10-minute split. However, no condition x time interactions were observed. No significant effects were found for sprint variables (P>0.05) with comparable values at T3 for mean distance (βA1: 163.9±3.8m; βA2: 161.2±3.5m; PL: 162.7±3.6m), average power (βA1: 352.7±14.5W; βA2: 342.2±13.5W; PL: 348.2±13.9W) and lactate (βA1: 10.0±0.9mmol·L-1; βA2: 9.2±1.1mmol·L-1; PL: 8.7±0.9mmol·L-1). Conclusions: Whilst daily βA may confer individual benefits, these results demonstrate limited impact of βA (irrespective of dosing strategy) on 30-minute rowing or subsequent sprint performance. Further investigation of βA dosage > 2.4 g·d-1 and/or chronic intervention periods (>4-8 weeks) may be warranted based on within-group observations

    Mortality and pulmonary complications in patients undergoing surgery with perioperative SARS-CoV-2 infection: an international cohort study

    Background: The impact of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) on postoperative recovery needs to be understood to inform clinical decision making during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. This study reports 30-day mortality and pulmonary complication rates in patients with perioperative SARS-CoV-2 infection. Methods: This international, multicentre, cohort study at 235 hospitals in 24 countries included all patients undergoing surgery who had SARS-CoV-2 infection confirmed within 7 days before or 30 days after surgery. The primary outcome measure was 30-day postoperative mortality and was assessed in all enrolled patients. The main secondary outcome measure was pulmonary complications, defined as pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome, or unexpected postoperative ventilation. Findings: This analysis includes 1128 patients who had surgery between Jan 1 and March 31, 2020, of whom 835 (74·0%) had emergency surgery and 280 (24·8%) had elective surgery. SARS-CoV-2 infection was confirmed preoperatively in 294 (26·1%) patients. 30-day mortality was 23·8% (268 of 1128). Pulmonary complications occurred in 577 (51·2%) of 1128 patients; 30-day mortality in these patients was 38·0% (219 of 577), accounting for 81·7% (219 of 268) of all deaths. In adjusted analyses, 30-day mortality was associated with male sex (odds ratio 1·75 [95% CI 1·28–2·40], p\textless0·0001), age 70 years or older versus younger than 70 years (2·30 [1·65–3·22], p\textless0·0001), American Society of Anesthesiologists grades 3–5 versus grades 1–2 (2·35 [1·57–3·53], p\textless0·0001), malignant versus benign or obstetric diagnosis (1·55 [1·01–2·39], p=0·046), emergency versus elective surgery (1·67 [1·06–2·63], p=0·026), and major versus minor surgery (1·52 [1·01–2·31], p=0·047). Interpretation: Postoperative pulmonary complications occur in half of patients with perioperative SARS-CoV-2 infection and are associated with high mortality. Thresholds for surgery during the COVID-19 pandemic should be higher than during normal practice, particularly in men aged 70 years and older. Consideration should be given for postponing non-urgent procedures and promoting non-operative treatment to delay or avoid the need for surgery.     PANC Study (Pancreatitis: A National Cohort Study): national cohort study examining the first 30 days from presentation of acute pancreatitis in the UK

    Abstract Background Acute pancreatitis is a common, yet complex, emergency surgical presentation. Multiple guidelines exist and management can vary significantly. The aim of this first UK, multicentre, prospective cohort study was to assess the variation in management of acute pancreatitis to guide resource planning and optimize treatment. Methods All patients aged greater than or equal to 18 years presenting with acute pancreatitis, as per the Atlanta criteria, from March to April 2021 were eligible for inclusion and followed up for 30 days. Anonymized data were uploaded to a secure electronic database in line with local governance approvals. Results A total of 113 hospitals contributed data on 2580 patients, with an equal sex distribution and a mean age of 57 years. The aetiology was gallstones in 50.6 per cent, with idiopathic the next most common (22.4 per cent). In addition to the 7.6 per cent with a diagnosis of chronic pancreatitis, 20.1 per cent of patients had a previous episode of acute pancreatitis. One in 20 patients were classed as having severe pancreatitis, as per the Atlanta criteria. The overall mortality rate was 2.3 per cent at 30 days, but rose to one in three in the severe group. Predictors of death included male sex, increased age, and frailty; previous acute pancreatitis and gallstones as aetiologies were protective. Smoking status and body mass index did not affect death. Conclusion Most patients presenting with acute pancreatitis have a mild, self-limiting disease. Rates of patients with idiopathic pancreatitis are high. Recurrent attacks of pancreatitis are common, but are likely to have reduced risk of death on subsequent admissions. </jats:sec
