Yang-Mills Theory In Axial Gauge
The Yang-Mills functional integral is studied in an axial variant of 't
Hooft's maximal Abelian gauge. In this gauge Gau\ss ' law can be completely
resolved resulting in a description in terms of unconstrained variables.
Compared to previous work along this line starting with work of Goldstone and
Jackiw one ends up here with half as many integration variables, besides a
field living in the Cartan subgroup of the gauge group and in D-1 dimension.
The latter is of particular relevance for the infrared behaviour of the theory.
Keeping only this variable we calculate the Wilson loop and find an area law.Comment: 43 pages REVTeX, 6 figure
Photometric transit search for planets around cool stars from the western Italian Alps: A pilot study
[ABRIDGED] In this study, we set out to a) demonstrate the sensitivity to <4
R_E transiting planets with periods of a few days around our program stars, and
b) improve our knowledge of some astrophysical properties(e.g., activity,
rotation) of our targets by combining spectroscopic information and our
differential photometric measurements. We achieve a typical nightly RMS
photometric precision of ~5 mmag, with little or no dependence on the
instrumentation used or on the details of the adopted methods for differential
photometry. The presence of correlated (red) noise in our data degrades the
precision by a factor ~1.3 with respect to a pure white noise regime. Based on
a detailed stellar variability analysis, a) we detected no transit-like events;
b) we determined photometric rotation periods of ~0.47 days and ~0.22 days for
LHS 3445 and GJ 1167A, respectively; c) these values agree with the large
projected rotational velocities (~25 km/s and ~33 km/s, respectively) inferred
for both stars based on the analysis of archival spectra; d) the estimated
inclinations of the stellar rotation axes for LHS 3445 and GJ 1167A are
consistent with those derived using a simple spot model; e) short-term,
low-amplitude flaring events were recorded for LHS 3445 and LHS 2686. Finally,
based on simulations of transit signals of given period and amplitude injected
in the actual (nightly reduced) photometric data for our sample, we derive a
relationship between transit detection probability and phase coverage. We find
that, using the BLS search algorithm, even when phase coverage approaches 100%,
there is a limit to the detection probability of ~90%. Around program stars
with phase coverage >50% we would have had >80% chances of detecting planets
with P0.5%, corresponding to minimum

Generic flow profiles induced by a beating cilium
We describe a multipole expansion for the low Reynolds number fluid flows
generated by a localized source embedded in a plane with a no-slip boundary
condition. It contains 3 independent terms that fall quadratically with the
distance and 6 terms that fall with the third power. Within this framework we
discuss the flows induced by a beating cilium described in different ways: a
small particle circling on an elliptical trajectory, a thin rod and a general
ciliary beating pattern. We identify the flow modes present based on the

Confining Properties of the Homogeneous Self-Dual Field and the Effective Potential in SU(2) Yang-Mills Theory
We examine in non-Abelian gauge theory the heavy quark limit in the presence
of the (anti-)self-dual homogeneous background field and see that a confining
potential emerges, consistent with the Wilson criterion, although the potential
is quadratic and not linear in the quark separation. This builds upon the
well-known feature that propagators in such a background field are entire
functions. The way in which deconfinement can occur at finite temperature is
then studied in the static temporal gauge by calculation of the effective
potential at high temperature. Finally we discuss the problems to be surmounted
in setting up the calculation of the effective potential nonperturbatively on

Oxaliplatin induces drug resistance more rapidly than cisplatin in H69 small cell lung cancer cells
Cisplatin produces good responses in solid tumours including small cell lung cancer (SCLC) but this is limited by the development of resistance. Oxaliplatin is reported to show activity against some cisplatin-resistant cancers but there is little known about oxaliplatin in SCLC and there are no reports of oxaliplatin resistant SCLC cell lines. Studies of drug resistance mainly focus on the cellular resistance mechanisms rather than how the cells develop resistance. This study examines the development of cisplatin and oxaliplatin resistance in H69 human SCLC cells in response to repeated treatment with clinically relevant doses of cisplatin or oxaliplatin for either 4 days or 2h. Treatments with 200ng/ml cisplatin or 400ng/ml oxaliplatin for 4 days produced sublines (H69CIS200 and H69OX400 respectively) that showed low level (approximately 2-fold) resistance after 8 treatments. Treatments with 1000ng/ml cisplatin or 2000ng/ml oxaliplatin for 2h also produced sublines, however these were not stably resistant suggesting shorter treatment pulses of drug may be more effective. Cells survived the first five treatments without any increase in resistance, by arresting their growth for a period and then regrowing. The period of growth arrest was reduced after the sixth treatment and the H69CIS200 and H69OX400 sublines showed a reduced growth arrest in response to cisplatin and oxaliplatin treatment suggesting that "regrowth resistance" initially protected against drug treatment and this was further upregulated and became part of the resistance phenotype of these sublines. Oxaliplatin dose escalation produced more surviving sublines than cisplatin dose escalation but neither set of sublines were associated with increased resistance as determined by 5-day cytotoxicity assays, also suggesting the involvement of regrowth resistance. The resistant sublines showed no change in platinum accumulation or glutathione levels even though the H69OX400 subline was more sensitive to buthionine sulfoximine treatment. The H69CIS200 cells were cross-resistant to oxaliplatin demonstrating that oxaliplatin does not have activity against low level cisplatin resistance. Relative to the H69 cells, the H69CIS200 and H69OX400 sublines were more sensitive to paclitaxel and taxotere suggests the taxanes may be useful in the treatment of platinum resistant SCLC. These novel cellular models of cisplatin and oxaliplatin resistant SCLC will be useful in developing strategies to treat platinum-resistant SCLC
Dietary availability patterns of the brazilian macro-regions
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Epidemiological studies have raised concerns about the role of dietary patterns on the risk of chronic diseases and also in the formulation of better informed nutrition policies.</p> <p>Objective</p> <p>The development of a dietary availability patterns according to geographic regions in Brazil.</p> <p>Methodology</p> <p>The 2002-2003 Brazilian Household Budget Survey was conducted in 48,470 households. Dietary availability patterns were identified by Principal Component Analysis using as a unit of analysis the survey's Primary Sampling Units (PSUs) and purchased amounts for 21 food groups. Each of the extracted dietary availability patterns was regressed on socioeconomics categories.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>There were no differences in dietary availability patterns between urban and rural areas. In all regions, a rice and beans pattern was identified. This pattern explained 15% to 28% of the variance dependent on the region of the country. In South, Southeast and Midwest regions, a mixed pattern including at least 10 food groups explaining 8% to 16% of the variance. In the North region (Amazon forest included) the first pattern was based on fish and nuts and then it was designed as regional pattern. In multiple linear regression the rice and beans pattern was associated with the presence of adolescents in the households, except for North region, whereas the presence of adolescents was associated with the Regional pattern. A mixed patterns were associated with a higher income and education (p < 0.05), except in the South region.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The rice and beans and regional dietary availability patterns, both considered healthy eating patterns are still important in the country. Brazil has taken many actions to improve nutrition as part of their public health policies, the data of the Household Budget Survey could help to recognize the different food choices in the large regions of the country.</p
Cloning and Characterization of Genes Involved in Nostoxanthin Biosynthesis of Sphingomonas elodea ATCC 31461
Most Sphingomonas species synthesize the yellow carotenoid nostoxanthin. However, the carotenoid biosynthetic pathway of these species remains unclear. In this study, we cloned and characterized a carotenoid biosynthesis gene cluster containing four carotenogenic genes (crtG, crtY, crtI and crtB) and a β-carotene hydroxylase gene (crtZ) located outside the cluster, from the gellan-gum producing bacterium Sphingomonas elodea ATCC 31461. Each of these genes was inactivated, and the biochemical function of each gene was confirmed based on chromatographic and spectroscopic analysis of the intermediates accumulated in the knockout mutants. Moreover, the crtG gene encoding the 2,2′-β-hydroxylase and the crtZ gene encoding the β-carotene hydroxylase, both responsible for hydroxylation of β-carotene, were confirmed by complementation studies using Escherichia coli producing different carotenoids. Expression of crtG in zeaxanthin and β-carotene accumulating E. coli cells resulted in the formation of nostoxanthin and 2,2′-dihydroxy-β-carotene, respectively. Based on these results, a biochemical pathway for synthesis of nostoxanthin in S. elodea ATCC 31461 is proposed
Measurement of the production cross section for W-bosons in association with jets in pp collisions at s=7 TeV with the ATLAS detector
This Letter reports on a first measurement of the inclusive W + jets cross section in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV at the LHC, with the ATLAS detector. Cross sections, in both the electron and muon decay modes of the W-boson, are presented as a function of jet multiplicity and of the transverse momentum of the leading and next-to-leading jets in the event. Measurements are also presented of the ratio of cross sections sigma (W + >= n)/sigma(W + >= n - 1) for inclusive jet multiplicities n = 1-4. The results, based on an integrated luminosity of 1.3 pb(-1), have been corrected for all known detector effects and are quoted in a limited and well-defined range of jet and lepton kinematics. The measured cross sections are compared to particle-level predictions based on perturbative QCD. Next-to-leading order calculations, studied here for n <= 2, are found in good agreement with the data. Leading-order multiparton event generators, normalized to the NNLO total cross section, describe the data well for all measured jet multiplicitie
Measurement of the cross-section and charge asymmetry of bosons produced in proton-proton collisions at TeV with the ATLAS detector
This paper presents measurements of the and cross-sections and the associated charge asymmetry as a
function of the absolute pseudorapidity of the decay muon. The data were
collected in proton--proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV with
the ATLAS experiment at the LHC and correspond to a total integrated luminosity
of 20.2~\mbox{fb^{-1}}. The precision of the cross-section measurements
varies between 0.8% to 1.5% as a function of the pseudorapidity, excluding the
1.9% uncertainty on the integrated luminosity. The charge asymmetry is measured
with an uncertainty between 0.002 and 0.003. The results are compared with
predictions based on next-to-next-to-leading-order calculations with various
parton distribution functions and have the sensitivity to discriminate between
