Complete Analysis of Baryon Magnetic Moments in 1/N_c
We generate a complete basis of magnetic moment operators for the N_c = 3
ground-state baryons in the 1/N_c expansion, and compute and tabulate all
associated matrix elements. We then compare to previous results derived in the
literature and predict additional relations among baryon magnetic moments
holding to subleading order in 1/N_c and flavor SU(3) breaking. Finally, we
predict all unknown diagonal and transition magnetic moments to <= 0.15 mu_N
accuracy, and suggest possible experimental measurements to improve the

The effects of grain shape and frustration in a granular column near jamming
We investigate the full phase diagram of a column of grains near jamming, as
a function of varying levels of frustration. Frustration is modelled by the
effect of two opposing fields on a grain, due respectively to grains above and
below it. The resulting four dynamical regimes (ballistic, logarithmic,
activated and glassy) are characterised by means of the jamming time of
zero-temperature dynamics, and of the statistics of attractors reached by the
latter. Shape effects are most pronounced in the cases of strong and weak
frustration, and essentially disappear around a mean-field point.Comment: 17 pages, 19 figure
Exploring Hyperons and Hypernuclei with Lattice QCD
In this work we outline a program for lattice QCD that would provide a first
step toward understanding the strong and weak interactions of strange baryons.
The study of hypernuclear physics has provided a significant amount of
information regarding the structure and weak decays of light nuclei containing
one or two Lambda's, and Sigma's. From a theoretical standpoint, little is
known about the hyperon-nucleon interaction, which is required input for
systematic calculations of hypernuclear structure. Furthermore, the
long-standing discrepancies in the P-wave amplitudes for nonleptonic hyperon
decays remain to be understood, and their resolution is central to a better
understanding of the weak decays of hypernuclei. We present a framework that
utilizes Luscher's finite-volume techniques in lattice QCD to extract the
scattering length and effective range for Lambda-N scattering in both QCD and
partially-quenched QCD. The effective theory describing the nonleptonic decays
of hyperons using isospin symmetry alone, appropriate for lattice calculations,

Modular Equations and Distortion Functions
Modular equations occur in number theory, but it is less known that such
equations also occur in the study of deformation properties of quasiconformal
mappings. The authors study two important plane quasiconformal distortion
functions, obtaining monotonicity and convexity properties, and finding sharp
bounds for them. Applications are provided that relate to the quasiconformal
Schwarz Lemma and to Schottky's Theorem. These results also yield new bounds
for singular values of complete elliptic integrals.Comment: 23 page
Neutron cross-sections for advanced nuclear systems : The n-TOF project at CERN

In nuclear energy, high accuracy neutron data are needed for the development of Generation IV fast reactors and accelerator driven systems, these last aimed specifically at nuclear waste incineration, as well as for research on innovative fuel cycles. In this context, a high luminosity Neutron Time Of Flight facility, n-TOF, is operating at CERN since more than a decade, with the aim of providing new, high accuracy and high resolution neutron cross-sections. Thanks to the features of the neutron beam, a rich experimental program relevant to nuclear technology has been carried out so far. The program will be further expanded in the near future, thanks in particular to a new high-flux experimental area, now under construction.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio
238U(n, Îł) reaction cross section measurement with C 6D6 detectors at the n-TOF CERN facility

High accuracy 234U(n,f) cross section in the resonance energy region
New results are presented of the 234U neutron-induced fission cross section, obtained with high accuracy in the resonance region by means of two methods using the 235U(n,f) as reference. The recent evaluation of the 235U(n,f) obtained with SAMMY by L. C. Leal et al. (these Proceedings), based on previous n-TOF data [1], has been used to calculate the 234U(n,f) cross section through the 234U/235U ratio, being here compared with the results obtained by using the n-TOF neutron flux
The nucleosynthesis of heavy elements in Stars : The key isotope 25Mg

The measurements have been carried out at the neutron time-of-flight facilities n-TOF at CERN (Switzerland) and GELINA installed at the EC-JRC-IRMM (Belgium). The cross sections as a function of neutron energy have been measured up to approximately 300 keV, covering the energy region of interest to the s process. The data analysis is ongoing and preliminary results show the potential relevance for the s process.Peer reviewe
Modelling vehicles acceleration during overtaking manoeuvres
[EN] Abstract: Overtaking manoeuvre is a key issue for two-lane rural roads. These roads should provide sufficient overtaking sight distance (OSD) at certain locations to allow faster vehicles to pass slower ones. However, overtaking requires occupying the opposing lane, which represents a serious safety concern. Severity of overtaking related crashes is very
high, compared with other manoeuvres. The development of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) for overtaking is being a complex task. Only few systems have been developed, but are not still in use. This research incorporated accurate data of real manoeuvres to improve the knowledge of the phenomenon. The trajectory of the overtaking vehicles on the left lane was observed. An instrumented vehicle measured the overtaking time and distance, the abreast position, and the initial and final speed of 180 drivers that passed it during a field experiment. Six different kinematic models (such as uniform acceleration or linear variation of acceleration) were calibrated. Generally, drivers started to accelerate before changing to the opposing lane.
