A review on electrospun bio-based polymers for water treatment
Over the past decades, electrospinning of biopolymers down to nanoscale garnered much interest to address most of the millennia issues related to water treatment. The fabrication of these nanostructured membranes added a new dimension to the current nanotechnologies where a wide range of materials can be processed to their nanosize. Electrospinning is a simple and versatile technique to fabricate unique nanostructured membranes with fascinating properties for a wide spectrum of applications such as filtration and others. These nanostructured membranes, fabricated by electrospinning, were found to be of a paramount importance because of their advanced inherited properties such as large surface-to-volume ratio, as well as tuneable porosity, stability, and high permeability. The extensive research conducted on these materials extended the success of electrospinning not only to bio-based polymer nanofibres, but to their hybrids and their derivatives. The technique also created avenues for advanced and massive production of nanofibres. This paper reviews the recent developments in the electrospinning technique. Electrospinning of biopolymers, their blends and functionalization using metals/metal oxides, and the potential applications of electrospun nanofibrous membranes in water filtration are discussed.National Research Foundation of South Africa (NRF), Professional Development Programme (PDP: UID-86101
Theory of Chiral Modulations and Fluctuations in Smectic-A Liquid Crystals Under an Electric Field
Chiral liquid crystals often exhibit periodic modulations in the molecular
director; in particular, thin films of the smectic-C* phase show a chiral
striped texture. Here, we investigate whether similar chiral modulations can
occur in the induced molecular tilt of the smectic-A phase under an applied
electric field. Using both continuum elastic theory and lattice simulations, we
find that the state of uniform induced tilt can become unstable when the system
approaches the smectic-A--smectic-C* transition, or when a high electric field
is applied. Beyond that instability point, the system develops chiral stripes
in the tilt, which induce corresponding ripples in the smectic layers. The
modulation persists up to an upper critical electric field and then disappears.
Furthermore, even in the uniform state, the system shows chiral fluctuations,
including both incipient chiral stripes and localized chiral vortices. We
compare these predictions with observed chiral modulations and fluctuations in

Experimental Controlled-NOT Logic Gate for Single Photons in the Coincidence Basis
We report a proof-of-principle demonstration of a probabilistic
controlled-NOT gate for single photons. Single-photon control and target qubits
were mixed with a single ancilla photon in a device constructed using only
linear optical elements. The successful operation of the controlled-NOT gate
relied on post-selected three-photon interference effects which required the

Demonstration of Feed-Forward Control for Linear Optics Quantum Computation
One of the main requirements in linear optics quantum computing is the
ability to perform single-qubit operations that are controlled by classical
information fed forward from the output of single photon detectors. These
operations correspond to pre-determined combinations of phase corrections and
bit-flips that are applied to the post-selected output modes of
non-deterministic quantum logic devices. Corrections of this kind are required
in order to obtain the correct logical output for certain detection events, and
their use can increase the overall success probability of the devices. In this
paper, we report on the experimental demonstration of the use of this type of
feed-forward system to increase the probability of success of a simple
non-deterministic quantum logic operation from approximately 1/4 to 1/2. This
logic operation involves the use of one target qubit and one ancilla qubit
which, in this experiment, are derived from a parametric down-conversion photon
pair. Classical information describing the detection of the ancilla photon is
fed-forward in real-time and used to alter the quantum state of the output
photon. A fiber optic delay line is used to store the output photon until a
polarization-dependent phase shift can be applied using a high speed Pockels
cell

Azimuthal Correlations in the Target Fragmentation Region of High Energy Nuclear Collisions
Results on the target mass dependence of proton and pion pseudorapidity
distributions and of their azimuthal correlations in the target rapidity range
are presented. The data have been taken with the
Plastic-Ball detector set-up for 4.9 GeV p + Au collisions at the Berkeley
BEVALAC and for 200 GeV/ p-, O-, and S-induced reactions on
different nuclei at the CERN-SPS. The yield of protons at backward rapidities
is found to be proportional to the target mass. Although protons show a typical
``back-to-back'' correlations, a ``side-by-side'' correlation is observed for
positive pions, which increases both with target mass and with impact parameter
of a collision. The data can consistently be described by assuming strong
rescattering phenomena including pion absorption effects in the entire excited

Ownership and control in a competitive industry
We study a differentiated product market in which an investor initially owns a controlling stake in one of two competing firms and may acquire a non-controlling or a controlling stake in a competitor, either directly using her own assets, or indirectly via the controlled firm. While industry profits are maximized within a symmetric two product monopoly, the investor attains this only in exceptional cases. Instead, she sometimes acquires a noncontrolling stake. Or she invests asymmetrically rather than pursuing a full takeover if she acquires a controlling one. The physics emphases of the PHENIX collaboration and the design and current
status of the PHENIX detector are discussed. The plan of the collaboration for
making the most effective use of the available luminosity in the first years of

Anisotropic flow of charged hadrons, pions and (anti-)protons measured at high transverse momentum in Pb-Pb collisions at TeV
The elliptic, , triangular, , and quadrangular, , azimuthal
anisotropic flow coefficients are measured for unidentified charged particles,
pions and (anti-)protons in Pb-Pb collisions at TeV
with the ALICE detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Results obtained with the
event plane and four-particle cumulant methods are reported for the
pseudo-rapidity range at different collision centralities and as a
function of transverse momentum, , out to GeV/.
The observed non-zero elliptic and triangular flow depends only weakly on
transverse momentum for GeV/. The small dependence
of the difference between elliptic flow results obtained from the event plane
and four-particle cumulant methods suggests a common origin of flow
fluctuations up to GeV/. The magnitude of the (anti-)proton
elliptic and triangular flow is larger than that of pions out to at least
GeV/ indicating that the particle type dependence persists out
