    Impacts of multiple stressors on bumblebee queens

    OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to assess the effect of a topical decongestant on eustachian tube function in children with ventilation tubes because of persistent otitis media with effusion. STUDY DESIGN: A randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled study. METHODS: At the outpatient departments of a secondary referral hospital and a tertiary referral hospital, eustachian tube function was measured before and after intranasal administration of five drops of 0.05% xylometazoline hydrochloride or placebo in 80 randomly selected children with ventilation tubes because of otitis media with effusion. RESULTS: Xylometazoline nose drops had no effect on the ventilatory or the protective function of the eustachian tube. CONCLUSIONS: Topical decongestants do not have a positive effect on eustachian tube function in children. Therefore, the use of topical decongestants to prevent or treat otitis media with effusion in children is not justified and should be discouraged

    Involvement of angiotensin II in the remodeling induced by a chronic decrease in blood flow in rat mesenteric resistance arteries

    Blood flow reduction induces inward remodeling of resistance arteries (RAs). This remodeling occurs in ischemic diseases, diabetes and hypertension. Nonetheless, the effect of flow reduction per se, independent of the effect of pressure or metabolic influences, is not well understood in RA. As angiotensin II is involved in the response to flow in RA, we hypothesized that angiotensin II may also be involved in the remodeling induced by a chronic flow reduction. We analyzed the effect of angiotensin I-converting enzyme inhibition (perindopril) and angiotensin II type 1 receptor blockade (candesartan) on inward remodeling induced by blood flow reduction in vivo in rat mesenteric RAs (low flow (LF) arteries). After 1 week, diameter reduction in LF arteries was associated with reduced endothelium-dependent relaxation and lower levels of eNOS expression. Superoxide production and extracellular signal-regulated kinases 1/2 (ERK1/2 phosphorylation were higher in LF than in normal flow arteries. Nevertheless, the absence of eNOS or superoxide level reduction (tempol or apocynin) did not prevent LF remodeling. Perindopril and candesartan prevented inward remodeling in LF arteries. Contractility to angiotensin II was reduced in LF vessels by perindopril, candesartan and the ERK1/2 blocker PD98059. ERK1/2 activation (ratio phospho-ERK/ERK) was higher in LF arteries, and this activation was prevented by perindopril and candesartan. ERK1/2 inhibition in vivo (U0126) prevented LF-induced diameter reduction. Thus, inward remodeling because of blood flow reduction in mesenteric RA depends on unopposed angiotensin II-induced contraction and ERK1/2 activation, independent of superoxide production. These findings might be of importance in the treatment of vascular disorders

    Physics of leptoquarks in precision experiments and at particle colliders

    We present a comprehensive review of physics effects generated by leptoquarks (LQs), i.e., hypothetical particles that can turn quarks into leptons and vice versa, of either scalar or vector nature. These considerations include discussion of possible completions of the Standard Model that contain LQ fields. The main focus of the review is on those LQ scenarios that are not problematic with regard to proton stability. We accordingly concentrate on the phenomenology of light leptoquarks that is relevant for precision experiments and particle colliders. Important constraints on LQ interactions with matter are derived from precision low-energy observables such as electric dipole moments, (g-2) of charged leptons, atomic parity violation, neutral meson mixing, Kaon, B, and D meson decays, etc. We provide a general analysis of indirect constraints on the strength of LQ interactions with the quarks and leptons to make statements that are as model independent as possible. We address complementary constraints that originate from electroweak precision measurements, top, and Higgs physics. The Higgs physics analysis we present covers not only the most recent but also expected results from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We finally discuss direct LQ searches. Current experimental situation is summarized and self-consistency of assumptions that go into existing accelerator-based searches is discussed.     Dynamics of spherically symmetric spacetimes: hydrodynamics and radiation

    Using the 3+1 formalism of general relativity we obtain the equations governing the dynamics of spherically symmetric spacetimes with arbitrary sources. We then specialize for the case of perfect fluids accompanied by a flow of interacting massless or massive particles (e.g. neutrinos) which are described in terms of relativistic transport theory. We focus in three types of coordinates: 1) isotropic gauge and maximal slicing, 2) radial gauge and polar slicing, and 3) isotropic gauge and polar slicing.Comment: submitted to Phys. Rev.     Onset of Perturbative Color Opacity at Small x and Upsilon Coherent Photoproduction off heavy nuclei at LHC

    We study photon-induced coherent production of Upsilon in ultraperipheral heavy ion collisions at LHC and demonstrate that the counting rates will be sufficient to measure nuclear shadowing of generalized gluon distributions. This will establish the transition from the regime of color transparency to the regime of perturbative color opacity in an unambiguous way. We argue that such measurements will provide the possibility to investigate the interaction of ultra-small color dipoles with nuclei in QCD at large energies, which are beyond the reach of the electron-nucleon (nucleus) colliders, and will unambiguously discriminate between the leading twist and higher twist scenarios of gluon nuclear shadowing.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figure
