Charge and Isospin Fluctuations in High Energy pp-Collisions
Charge and isospin event-by-event fluctuations in high-energy pp-collisions
are predicted within the Unitary Eikonal Model, in particular the fluctuation
patterns of the ratios of charged-to-charged and neutral-to-charged pions.
These fluctuations are found to be sensitive to the presence of unstable
resonances, such as and mesons. We predict that the
charge-fluctuation observable should be restricted to the interval
depending on the production ratio. Also, the
isospin fluctuations of the DCC-type of the ratio of neutral-to-charged pions

Natural Orbitals and BEC in traps, a diffusion Monte Carlo analysis
We investigate the properties of hard core Bosons in harmonic traps over a
wide range of densities. Bose-Einstein condensation is formulated using the
one-body Density Matrix (OBDM) which is equally valid at low and high
densities. The OBDM is calculated using diffusion Monte Carlo methods and it is
diagonalized to obtain the "natural" single particle orbitals and their
occupation, including the condensate fraction. At low Boson density, , where and is the hard core diameter, the condensate is
localized at the center of the trap. As increases, the condensate moves
to the edges of the trap. At high density it is localized at the edges of the
trap. At the Gross-Pitaevskii theory of the condensate
describes the whole system within 1%. At corrections are
3% to the GP energy but 30% to the Bogoliubov prediction of the condensate
depletion. At , mean field theory fails. At , the Bosons behave more like a liquid He droplet than a trapped Boson

Magnetic structure of CeRhIn_5 as a function of pressure and temperature
We report magnetic neutron-diffraction and electrical resistivity studies on
single crystals of the heavy-fermion antiferromagnet CeRhIn at pressures
up to 2.3 GPa. These experiments show that the staggered moment of Ce and the
incommensurate magnetic structure change weakly with applied pressure up to
1.63 GPa, where resistivity, specific heat and NQR measurements confirm the
presence of bulk superconductivity. This work places new constraints on an
interpretation of the relationship between antiferromagnetism and

Magnetic Ordering, Orbital Ordering and Resonant X-ray Scattering in Perovskite Titanates
The effective Hamiltonian for perovskite titanates is derived by taking into
account the three-fold degeneracy of orbitals and the strong
electron-electron interactions. The magnetic and orbital ordered phases are
studied in the mean-field approximation applied to the effective Hamiltonian. A
large degeneracy of the orbital states in the ferromagnetic phase is found in
contrast to the case of the doubly degenerate orbitals. Lifting of this
orbital degeneracy due to lattice distortions and spin-orbit coupling is
examined. A general form for the scattering cross section of the resonant x-ray
scattering is derived and is applied to the recent experimental results in
YTiO. The spin wave dispersion relation in the orbital ordered YTiO is

Comparison of space-time evolutions of hot/dense matter in =17 and 130 GeV relativistic heavy ion collisions based on a hydrodynamical model
Based on a hydrodynamical model, we compare 130 GeV/ Au+Au collisions at
RHIC and 17 GeV/ Pb+Pb collisions at SPS. The model well reproduces the
single-particle distributions of both RHIC and SPS.
The numerical solution indicates that huge amount of collision energy in RHIC
is mainly used to produce a large extent of hot fluid rather than to make a
high temperature matter; longitudinal extent of the hot fluid in RHIC is much
larger than that of SPS and initial energy density of the fluid is only 5%
higher than the one in SPS. The solution well describes the HBT radii at SPS

Event-by-Event Fluctuations in Particle Multiplicities and Transverse Energy Produced in 158.A GeV Pb+Pb collisions
Event-by-event fluctuations in the multiplicities of charged particles and
photons, and the total transverse energy in 158 GeV Pb+Pb collisions
are studied for a wide range of centralities. For narrow centrality bins the
multiplicity and transverse energy distributions are found to be near perfect
Gaussians. The effect of detector acceptance on the multiplicity fluctuations
has been studied and demonstrated to follow statistical considerations. The
centrality dependence of the charged particle multiplicity fluctuations in the
measured data has been found to agree reasonably well with those obtained from
a participant model. However for photons the multiplicity fluctuations has been
found to be lower compared to those obtained from a participant model. The
multiplicity and transverse energy fluctuations have also been compared to

Parton coalescence at RHIC
Using a covariant coalescence model, we study hadron production in
relativistic heavy ion collisions from both soft partons in the quark-gluon
plasma and hard partons in minijets. Including transverse flow of soft partons
and independent fragmentation of minijet partons, the model is able to describe
available experimental data on pion, kaon, and antiproton spectra. The
resulting antiproton to pion ratio is seen to increase at low transverse
momenta and reaches a value of about one at intermediate transverse momenta, as
observed in experimental data at RHIC. A similar dependence of the antikaon to
pion ratio on transverse momentum is obtained, but it reaches a smaller value
at intermediate transverse momenta. At high transverse momenta, the model
predicts that both the antiproton to pion and the antikaon to pion ratio
decrease and approach those given by the perturbative QCD. Both collective flow
effect and coalescence of minijet partons with partons in the quark-gluon
plasma affect significantly the spectra of hadrons with intermediate transverse
momenta. Elliptic flows of protons, Lambdas, and Omegas have also been
evaluated from partons with elliptic flows extracted from fitting measured pion
and kaon elliptic flows, and they are found to be consistent with available

Negotiating Value: Comparing Human and Animal Fracture Care in Industrial Societies
At the beginning of the twentieth-century, human and veterinary surgeons faced the challenge of a medical marketplace transformed by technology. The socio-economic value ascribed to their patients – people and domestic animals – was changing, reflecting the increasing mechanisation of industry and the decreasing dependence of society upon non-human animals for labour. In human medicine, concern for the economic consequences of fractures “pathologised” any significant level of post-therapeutic disability, a productivist perspective contrary to the traditional corpus of medical values. In contrast, veterinarians adapted to the mechanisation of horse-power by shifting their primary professional interest to companion animals; a type of veterinary patient generally valued for the unique emotional attachment of the owner, and not the productive capacity of the animal. The economic rationalisation of human fracture care and the “sentimental” transformation of veterinary orthopaedic expertise indicates how these specialists utilised increasingly convergent rhetorical arguments to justify the application of innovative fracture care technologies to their humans and animal patients. Anisotropic flow of charged hadrons, pions and (anti-)protons measured at high transverse momentum in Pb-Pb collisions at TeV
The elliptic, , triangular, , and quadrangular, , azimuthal
anisotropic flow coefficients are measured for unidentified charged particles,
pions and (anti-)protons in Pb-Pb collisions at TeV
with the ALICE detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Results obtained with the
event plane and four-particle cumulant methods are reported for the
pseudo-rapidity range at different collision centralities and as a
function of transverse momentum, , out to GeV/.
The observed non-zero elliptic and triangular flow depends only weakly on
transverse momentum for GeV/. The small dependence
of the difference between elliptic flow results obtained from the event plane
and four-particle cumulant methods suggests a common origin of flow
fluctuations up to GeV/. The magnitude of the (anti-)proton
elliptic and triangular flow is larger than that of pions out to at least
GeV/ indicating that the particle type dependence persists out

Centrality dependence of charged particle production at large transverse momentum in Pb-Pb collisions at TeV
The inclusive transverse momentum () distributions of primary
charged particles are measured in the pseudo-rapidity range as a
function of event centrality in Pb-Pb collisions at
TeV with ALICE at the LHC. The data are presented in the range
GeV/ for nine centrality intervals from 70-80% to 0-5%.
The Pb-Pb spectra are presented in terms of the nuclear modification factor
using a pp reference spectrum measured at the same collision
energy. We observe that the suppression of high- particles strongly
depends on event centrality. In central collisions (0-5%) the yield is most
suppressed with at -7 GeV/. Above
GeV/, there is a significant rise in the nuclear modification
factor, which reaches for GeV/. In
peripheral collisions (70-80%), the suppression is weaker with almost independently of . The measured nuclear
