Hydrodynamics and two-dimensional dark lump solitons for polariton superfluids
We study a two-dimensional incoherently pumped exciton-polariton condensate described by an open-dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii equation for the polariton dynamics coupled to a rate equation for the exciton density. Adopting a hydrodynamic approach, we use multiscale expansion methods to derive several models appearing in the context of shallow water waves with viscosity. In particular, we derive a Boussinesq/Benney-Luke–type equation and its far-field expansion in terms of Kadomtsev-Petviashvili-I (KP-I) equations for right- and left-going waves. From the KP-I model, we predict the existence of vorticity-free, weakly (algebraically) localized two-dimensional dark-lump solitons. We find that, in the presence of dissipation, dark lumps exhibit a lifetime three times larger than that of planar dark solitons. Direct numerical simulations show that dark lumps do exist, and their dissipative dynamics is well captured by our analytical approximation. It is also shown that lumplike and vortexlike structures can spontaneously be formed as a result of the transverse “snaking” instability of dark soliton stripes.Europe Union project AEI/FEDER: MAT2016-79866-
Interactions and scattering of quantum vortices in a polariton fluid
Quantum vortices, the quantized version of classical vortices, play a
prominent role in superfluid and superconductor phase transitions. However,
their exploration at a particle level in open quantum systems has gained
considerable attention only recently. Here we study vortex pair interactions in
a resonant polariton fluid created in a solid-state microcavity. By tracking
the vortices on picosecond time scales, we reveal the role of nonlinearity, as
well as of density and phase gradients, in driving their rotational dynamics.
Such effects are also responsible for the split of composite spin-vortex
molecules into elementary half-vortices, when seeding opposite vorticity
between the two spinorial components. Remarkably, we also observe that vortices
placed in close proximity experience a pull-push scenario leading to unusual
scattering-like events that can be described by a tunable effective potential.
Understanding vortex interactions can be useful in quantum hydrodynamics and in

Effects of a resistance-training programme on endoplasmic reticulum unfolded protein response and mitochondrial functions in PBMCs from elderly subjects
10 p.Aging has been related with a decline in the ability to handle protein folding, which leads to endoplasmic reticulum stress and alterations in unfolded protein response (UPR). Importantly, physical activity could activate the UPR and attenuate or prevent age-induced endoplasmic reticulum (ER) dysfunction. The current study evaluated the effects of a resistance exercise on UPR and mitochondrial functions in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from elderly subjects. Thirty healthy women and men (age, 72.8, sx− = 2.2 years) were randomized to a training group, which performed an 8-week resistance training programme, or a control group, which followed their daily routines. The phosphorylation of PERK and IRE1, as well as ATF4, and XBP1 protein expression, significantly increased following the training, while expression of BiP, AFT6 and CHOP remain without changes. Additionally, the intervention also induced an increase in PGC-1α and Mfn1 protein levels, while no changes were found in Drp1 expression. Finally, the resistance protocol was not able to activate PINK1/Parkin and Bnip3/Nix pathways. The results obtained seem to indicate that 8-week resistance exercise activates the UPR, stimulates mitochondrial biogenesis, maintains mitochondrial dynamics and prevents mitophagy activation by unfolded proteins in PBMCs from elderly subjects.S
Carbon-fiber tips for scanning probe microscopes and molecular electronics experiments
We fabricate and characterize carbon-fiber tips for their use in combined
scanning tunneling and force microscopy based on piezoelectric quartz tuning
fork force sensors. An electrochemical fabrication procedure to etch the tips
is used to yield reproducible sub-100-nm apex. We also study electron transport
through single-molecule junctions formed by a single octanethiol molecule
bonded by the thiol anchoring group to a gold electrode and linked to a carbon
tip by the methyl group. We observe the presence of conductance plateaus during
the stretching of the molecular bridge, which is the signature of the formation

Taxonomic variations in the gut microbiome of gout patients with and without tophi might have a functional impact on urate metabolism
Objective: To evaluate the taxonomic composition of the gut microbiome in gout patients with and without tophi
formation, and predict bacterial functions that might have an impact on urate metabolism.
Methods: Hypervariable V3–V4 regions of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene from fecal samples of gout patients with
and without tophi (n=33 and n=25, respectively) were sequenced and compared to fecal samples from 53 healthy
controls. We explored predictive functional profles using bioinformatics in order to identify diferences in taxonomy
and metabolic pathways.
Results: We identifed a microbiome characterized by the lowest richness and a higher abundance of Phascolarctobacterium, Bacteroides, Akkermansia, and Ruminococcus_gnavus_group genera in patients with gout without tophi
when compared to controls. The Proteobacteria phylum and the Escherichia-Shigella genus were more abundant
in patients with tophaceous gout than in controls. Fold change analysis detected nine genera enriched in healthy
controls compared to gout groups (Bifdobacterium, Butyricicoccus, Oscillobacter, Ruminococcaceae_UCG_010, Lachnospiraceae_ND2007_group, Haemophilus, Ruminococcus_1, Clostridium_sensu_stricto_1, and Ruminococcaceae_
UGC_013). We found that the core microbiota of both gout groups shared Bacteroides caccae, Bacteroides stercoris ATCC
43183, and Bacteroides coprocola DSM 17136. These bacteria might perform functions linked to one-carbon metabo‑
lism, nucleotide binding, amino acid biosynthesis, and purine biosynthesis. Finally, we observed diferences in key
bacterial enzymes involved in urate synthesis, degradation, and elimination.
Conclusion: Our fndings revealed that taxonomic variations in the gut microbiome of gout patients with and with‑
out tophi might have a functional impact on urate metabolism.

Planck pre-launch status: Low Frequency Instrument calibration and expected scientific performance
We give the calibration and scientific performance parameters of the Planck
Low Frequency Instrument (LFI) measured during the ground cryogenic test
campaign. These parameters characterise the instrument response and constitute
our best pre-launch knowledge of the LFI scientific performance. The LFI shows
excellent stability and rejection of instrumental systematic effects;
measured noise performance shows that LFI is the most sensitive instrument of
its kind. The set of measured calibration parameters will be updated during

Precision Top-Quark Mass Measurements at CDF
We present a precision measurement of the top-quark mass using the full
sample of Tevatron TeV proton-antiproton collisions collected
by the CDF II detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 8.7
. Using a sample of candidate events decaying into the
lepton+jets channel, we obtain distributions of the top-quark masses and the
invariant mass of two jets from the boson decays from data. We then compare
these distributions to templates derived from signal and background samples to
extract the top-quark mass and the energy scale of the calorimeter jets with
{\it in situ} calibration. The likelihood fit of the templates from signal and
background events to the data yields the single most-precise measurement of the
top-quark mass, \mtop = 172.85 \pm\pmComment: submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
A search for resonant production of pairs in $4.8\ \rm{fb}^{-1}p\bar{p}\sqrt{s}=1.96\ \rm{TeV}$
We search for resonant production of tt pairs in 4.8 fb^{-1} integrated
luminosity of ppbar collision data at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV in the lepton+jets decay
channel, where one top quark decays leptonically and the other hadronically. A
matrix element reconstruction technique is used; for each event a probability
density function (pdf) of the ttbar candidate invariant mass is sampled. These
pdfs are used to construct a likelihood function, whereby the cross section for
resonant ttbar production is estimated, given a hypothetical resonance mass and
width. The data indicate no evidence of resonant production of ttbar pairs. A
benchmark model of leptophobic Z \rightarrow ttbar is excluded with m_{Z'} <

Combined search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying to a bb pair using the full CDF data set
We combine the results of searches for the standard model Higgs boson based
on the full CDF Run II data set obtained from sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV p-pbar
collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron corresponding to an integrated luminosity
of 9.45/fb. The searches are conducted for Higgs bosons that are produced in
association with a W or Z boson, have masses in the range 90-150 GeV/c^2, and
decay into bb pairs. An excess of data is present that is inconsistent with the
background prediction at the level of 2.5 standard deviations (the most
significant local excess is 2.7 standard deviations).Comment: To be published in Phys. Rev. Lett (v2 contains minor updates based

Measurement of branching ratio and Bs0 lifetime in the decay Bs0 -> J/psi f0(980) at CDF
We present a study of Bs0 decays to the CP-odd final state J/psi f0(980) with
J/psi -> mu+ mu- and f0(980) -> pi+ pi-. Using ppbar collision data with an
integrated luminosity of 3.8/fb collected by the CDF II detector at the
Tevatron we measure a Bs0 lifetime of tau(Bs0 -> J/psi f0(980)) = 1.70
-0.11+0.12(stat) +-0.03(syst) ps. This is the first measurement of the Bs0
lifetime in a decay to a CP eigenstate and corresponds in the standard model to
the lifetime of the heavy Bs0 eigenstate. We also measure the product of
branching fractions of Bs0 -> J/psi f0(980) and f0(980) -> pi+ pi- relative to
the product of branching fractions of Bs0 -> J/psi phi and phi -> K+ K- to be
R_f0/phi = 0.257 +_0.020(stat) +-0.014(syst), which is the most precise
