    Thermal tolerance, climatic variability and latitude

    The greater latitudinal extents of occurrence of species towards higher latitudes has been attributed to the broadening of physiological tolerances with latitude as a result of increases in climatic variation. While there is some support for such patterns in climate, the physiological tolerances of species across large latitudinal gradients have seldom been assessed. Here we report findings for insects based on published upper and lower lethal temperature data. The upper thermal limits show little geographical variation. In contrast, the lower bounds of supercooling points and lower lethal temperatures do indeed decline with latitude. However, this is not the case for the upper bounds, leading to an increase in the variation in lower lethal limits with latitude. These results provide some support for the physiological tolerance assumption associated with Rapoport's rule, but highlight the need for coupled data on species tolerances and range size

    Comparaison des qualités sensorielles de la viande et de la carcasse d’agneaux élevés au pâturage en production biologique ou conventionnelle à deux niveaux de disponibilités en herbe

    Nous avons comparé les qualités sensorielles des carcasses et des viandes d’agneaux engraissés au pâturage en élevage biologique ou conventionnel (O vs. C) à deux niveaux de disponibilités en herbe (Haut H vs. Bas L). Le profil de croissance a été maintenu similaire entre les deux systèmes de production. L’expérimentation a été conduite pendant deux années avec 12 agneaux mâles castrés de race Limousine dans chaque groupe OH, OL, CH et CL chaque année. Les traitements O et C différaient par le niveau de fertilisation azotée minérale épandu sur les parcelles. Les parcelles expérimentales étaient des repousses après fauche et elles étaient conduites en pâturage tournant pour conduire à un âge moyen des agneaux à l’abattage de 5 et 6 mois dans les lots H et L respectivement. Les côtelettes O ont été moins appréciées que les côtelettes C. L’indice de rouge du muscle longissimus thoracis et lumborum après 2h d’exposition à l’air a été plus élevé chez les agneaux L que chez les agneaux H, indiquant les effets possibles d’une intensification de l’élevage biologique à travers une augmentation du chargement

    Hypoxia promotes chemoresistance in acute lymphoblastic leukemia cell lines by modulating death signaling pathways

    International audienceBackground: Several studies show that bone marrow (BM) microenvironment and hypoxia condition can promote the survival of leukemic cells and induce resistance to anti-leukemic drugs. However, the molecular mechanism for chemoresistance by hypoxia is not fully understood.Methods: In the present study, we investigated the effect of hypoxia on resistance to two therapies, methotrexate (MTX) and prednisolone (PRD), in two cell models for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). To look for an implication of hypoxia in chemoresistance, cell viability, total cell density and cell proliferation were analyzed. Survival and death signaling pathways were also screened by "reverse phase protein array" (RPPA) and western blotting experiments conducted on selected proteins to confirm the results.Results: We found that hypoxia promotes chemoresistance in both ALL cell lines. The induction of drug-resistance by hypoxia was not associated with an increase in total cell density nor an increase in cell proliferation. Using RPPA, we show that chemoresistance induced by hypoxia was mediated through an alteration of cell death signaling pathways. This protective effect of hypoxia seems to occur via a decrease in pro-apoptotic proteins and an increase in anti-apoptotic proteins. The results were confirmed by immunoblotting. Indeed, hypoxia is able to modulate the expression of anti-apoptotic proteins independently of chemotherapy while a pro-apoptotic signal induced by a chemotherapy is not modulated by hypoxia.Conclusions: Hypoxia is a factor in leukemia cell resistance and for two conventional chemotherapies modulates cell death signaling pathways without affecting total cell density or cell proliferation

    User-friendly imaging algorithms for interferometry

    OPTICON currently supports a Joint Research Activity (JRA) dedicated to providing easy to use image reconstruction algorithms for optical/IR interferometric data. This JRA aims to provide state-of-the-art image reconstruction methods with a common interface and comprehensive documentation to the community. These tools will provide the capability to compare the results of using different settings and algorithms in a consistent and unified way. The JRA is also providing tutorials and sample datasets to introduce the principles of image reconstruction and illustrate how to use the software products.     A method for detection of structure

    Context. In order to understand the evolution of molecular clouds it is important to identify the departures from self-similarity associated with the scales of self-gravity and the driving of turbulence. Aims. A method is described based on structure functions for determining whether a region of gas, such as a molecular cloud, is fractal or contains structure with characteristic scale sizes. Methods. Using artificial data containing structure it is shown that derivatives of higher order structure functions provide a powerful way to detect the presence of characteristic scales should any be present and to estimate the size of such structures. The method is applied to observations of hot H2 in the Kleinman-Low nebula, north of the Trapezium stars in the Orion Molecular Cloud, including both brightness and velocity data. The method is compared with other techniques such as Fourier transform and histogram techniques. Results. It is found that the density structure, represented by H2 emission brightness in the K-band (2-2.5micron), exhibits mean characteristic sizes of 110, 550, 1700 and 2700AU. The velocity data show the presence of structure at 140, 1500 and 3500AU. Compared with other techniques such as Fourier transform or histogram, the method appears both more sensitive to characteristic scales and easier to interpret.Comment: Astronomy and Astrophysics, in pres

    Digestive and appendicular soft-parts, with behavioural implications, in a large Ordovician trilobite from the Fezouata Lagerstätte, Morocco

    Trilobites were one of the most successful groups of marine arthropods during the Palaeozoic era, yet their soft-part anatomy is only known from a few exceptionally-preserved specimens found in a handful of localities from the Cambrian to the Devonian. This is because, even if the sclerotized appendages were not destroyed during early taphonomic stages, they are often overprinted by the three-dimensional, mineralised exoskeleton. Inferences about the ventral anatomy and behavioural activities of trilobites can also be derived from the ichnological record, which suggests that most Cruziana and Rusophycus trace fossils were possibly produced by the actions of trilobites. Three specimens of the asaphid trilobite Megistaspis (Ekeraspis) hammondi, have been discovered in the Lower Ordovician Fezouata Konservat-Lagerstätte of southern Morocco, preserving appendages and digestive tract. The digestive structures include a crop with digestive caeca, while the appendages display exopodal setae and slight heteropody (cephalic endopods larger and more spinose than thoracic and pygidial ones). The combination of these digestive structures and the heteropody has never been described together among trilobites, and the latter could assist in the understanding of the production of certain comb-like traces of the Cruziana rugosa group, which are extraordinarily abundant on the shallow marine shelves around Gondwana.This work has been supported by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, project number CGL2012- 39471/BTE.Peer reviewe

    Revealing the inner circumstellar disk of the T Tauri star S Coronae Australis N using the VLTI

We investigate the structure of the circumstellar disk of the T Tauri star S CrA N and test whether the observations agree with the standard picture proposed for Herbig Ae stars. Methods. Our observations were carried out with the VLTI/AMBER instrument in the H and K bands with the low spectral resolution mode. For the interpretation of our near-infrared AMBER and archival mid-infrared MIDI visibilities, we employed both geometric and temperature-gradient models. Results. To characterize the disk size, we first fitted geometric models consisting of a stellar point source, a ring-shaped disk, and a halo structure to the visibilities. In the H and K bands, we measured ring-fit radii of 0.73  ± 0.03 mas (corresponding to 0.095   ±   0.018 AU for a distance of 130 pc) and 0.85   ±   0.07 mas (0.111   ±   0.026 AU), respectively. This K-band radius is approximately two times larger than the dust sublimation radius of ≈0.05 AU expected for a dust sublimation temperature of 1500 K and gray dust opacities, but approximately agrees with the prediction of models including backwarming (namely a radius of ≈0.12 AU). The derived temperature-gradient models suggest that the disk is approximately face-on consisting of two disk components with a gap between star and disk. The inner disk component has a temperature close to the dust sublimation temperature and a quite narrow intensity distribution with a radial extension from 0.11 AU to 0.14 AU. Conclusions. Both our geometric and temperature-gradient models suggest that the T Tauri star S CrA N is surrounded by a circumstellar disk that is truncated at an inner radius of ≈ 0.11 AU.     A low optical depth region in the inner disk of the HerbigAe star HR5999

    Circumstellar disks surrounding young stars are known to be the birthplaces of planets, and the innermost astronomical unit is of particular interest. We present new long-baseline spectro-interferometric observations of the HerbigAe star, HR5999, obtained in the H and K bands with the AMBER instrument at the VLTI, and aim to produce near-infrared images at the sub-AU spatial scale. We spatially resolve the circumstellar material and reconstruct images using the MiRA algorithm. In addition, we interpret the interferometric observations using models that assume that the near-infrared excess is dominated by the emission of a circumstellar disk. We compare the images reconstructed from the VLTI measurements to images obtained using simulated model data. The K-band image reveals three main elements: a ring-like feature located at ~0.65 AU, a low surface brightness region inside, and a central spot. At the maximum angular resolution of our observations (1.3 mas), the ring is resolved while the central spot is only marginally resolved, preventing us from revealing the exact morphology of the circumstellar environment. We suggest that the ring traces silicate condensation, i.e., an opacity change, in a circumstellar disk around HR 5999. We build a model that includes a ring at the silicate sublimation radius and an inner disk of low surface brightness responsible for a large amount of the near-infrared continuum emission. The model successfully fits the SED, visibilities, and closure phases, and provides evidence of a low surface brightness region inside the silicate sublimation radius. This study provides additional evidence that in HerbigAe stars, there is material in a low surface brightness region, probably a low optical depth region, located inside the silicate sublimation radius and of unknown nature.Comment: 11 pages, 10 figure

    Estimating the phase in ground-based interferometry: performance comparison between single-mode and multimode schemes

    In this paper we compare the performance of multi and single-mode interferometry for the estimation of the phase of the complex visibility. We provide a theoretical description of the interferometric signal which enables to derive the phase error in presence of detector, photon and atmospheric noises, for both multi and single-mode cases. We show that, despite the loss of flux occurring when injecting the light in the single-mode component (i.e. single-mode fibers, integrated optics), the spatial filtering properties of such single-mode devices often enable higher performance than multimode concepts. In the high flux regime speckle noise dominated, single-mode interferometry is always more efficient, and its performance is significantly better when the correction provided by adaptive optics becomes poor, by a factor of 2 and more when the Strehl ratio is lower than 10%. In low light level cases (detector noise regime), multimode interferometry reaches better performance, yet the gain never exceeds 20%, which corresponds to the percentage of photon loss due to the injection in the guides. Besides, we demonstrate that single-mode interferometry is also more robust to the turbulence in both cases of fringe tracking and phase referencing, at the exception of narrow field of views (<1 arcsec).Comment: 9 pages (+ 11 online material appendices) -- 8 Figures.     A 3D view of the outflow in the Orion Molecular Cloud 1 (OMC-1)

    The fast outflow emerging from a region associated with massive star formation in the Orion Molecular Cloud 1 (OMC-1), located behind the Orion Nebula, appears to have been set in motion by an explosive event. Here we study the structure and dynamics of outflows in OMC-1. We combine radial velocity and proper motion data for near-IR emission of molecular hydrogen to obtain the first 3-dimensional (3D) structure of the OMC-1 outflow. Our work illustrates a new diagnostic tool for studies of star formation that will be exploited in the near future with the advent of high spatial resolution spectro-imaging in particular with data from the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA). We use published radial and proper motion velocities obtained from the shock-excited vibrational emission in the H2 v=1-0 S(1) line at 2.122 μ\mum obtained with the GriF instrument on the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, the Apache Point Observatory, the Anglo-Australian Observatory and the Subaru Telescope. These data give the 3D velocity of ejecta yielding a 3D reconstruction of the outflows. This allows one to view the material from different vantage points in space giving considerable insight into the geometry. Our analysis indicates that the ejection occurred <720 years ago from a distorted ring-like structure of ~15" (6000 AU) in diameter centered on the proposed point of close encounter of the stars BN, source I and maybe also source n. We propose a simple model involving curvature of shock trajectories in magnetic fields through which the origin of the explosion and the centre defined by extrapolated proper motions of BN, I and n may be brought into spatial coincidence.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics (A&A), 12 pages, 9 figure
