Composition, production and procurement of glass at San Vincenzo: an early medieval monastic complex in southern Italy
136 glasses from the ninth-century monastery of San Vincenzo and its workshops have been analysed by electron microprobe in order to situate the assemblage within the first millennium CE glass making tradition. The majority of the glass compositions can be paralleled by Roman glass from the first to third centuries, with very few samples consistent with later compositional groups. Colours for trailed decoration on vessels, for vessel bodies and for sheet glass for windows were largely produced by melting the glass tesserae from old Roman mosaics. Some weakly-coloured transparent glass was obtained by re-melting Roman window glass, while some was produced by melting and mixing of tesserae, excluding the strongly coloured cobalt blues. Our data suggest that to feed the needs of the glass workshop, the bulk of the glass was removed as tesserae and windows from a large Roman building. This is consistent with a historical account according to which the granite columns of the monastic church were spolia from a Roman temple in the region. The purported shortage of natron from Egypt does not appear to explain the dependency of San Vincenzo on old Roman glass. Rather, the absence of contemporary primary glass may reflect the downturn in long-distance trade in the later first millennium C.E., and the role of patronage in the “ritual economy” founded upon donations and gift-giving of the time
Progressive Subdivision Curves for Aerodynamic Shape Optimisation
This work presents a shape parameterisation method based on multi-resolutional subdivision curves and investigates its application to aerodynamic optimisation. Subdivision curves are defined as the limit curve of a recursive application of a subdivision rule, which provides an intrinsically hierarchical set of control polygons that can be used to provide surface control at varying levels of fidelity. This is used to construct a progressive aerofoil parameterisation that allows an optimisation to be initialised with a small number of design variables, and then periodically increased in resolution through the optimisation. This brings the benefits of a low dimensional design space (high convergence rate, increased robustness, low cost finite-difference gradients) while still allowing the final results to be from a high-dimensional design space. In this work the progressive refinement technique is tested on a variety of optimisation problems. For each problem a range of ‘static’ (non-progressive) subdivision schemes (equivalent to cubic B-splines) are also used as a control group. For all the optimisation cases the progressive schemes perform comparably or better than the static methods, often providing a significant computational advantage, and in many cases allowing a solution to be found when the static method would otherwise finish prematurely in a local optimum
Governance of Ecosystem Services Across Scales in Bangladesh
Ecosystem services are governed and affected by different legal, institutional and policy frameworks. Hence, formal documented policies, regulations and statutes of Bangladesh are examined where relevant. This facilitates greater understanding of the influence that governance has on the accessibility to the benefits derived and how this might then affect livelihoods and well-being. A range of factors are found to determine effectiveness in terms of general adaptive governance principles, with coordination, enforcement and rigidity being important issues. In addition, policy development in crucial areas may not be supported by associated legal frameworks, undermining implementation. However, workable (and dynamic) combinations of primary and secondary legislation are both possible and desirable to achieve flexible policy instruments.<br/
Garden and landscape-scale correlates of moths of differing conservation status: significant effects of urbanization and habitat diversity
Moths are abundant and ubiquitous in vegetated terrestrial environments and are pollinators, important herbivores of wild plants, and food for birds, bats and rodents. In recent years, many once abundant and widespread species have shown sharp declines that have been cited by some as indicative of a widespread insect biodiversity crisis. Likely causes of these declines include agricultural intensification, light pollution, climate change, and urbanization; however, the real underlying cause(s) is still open to conjecture. We used data collected from the citizen science Garden Moth Scheme (GMS) to explore the spatial association between the abundance of 195 widespread British species of moth, and garden habitat and landscape features, to see if spatial habitat and landscape associations varied for species of differing conservation status. We found that associations with habitat and landscape composition were species-specific, but that there were consistent trends in species richness and total moth abundance. Gardens with more diverse and extensive microhabitats were associated with higher species richness and moth abundance; gardens near to the coast were associated with higher richness and moth abundance; and gardens in more urbanized locations were associated with lower species richness and moth abundance. The same trends were also found for species classified as increasing, declining and vulnerable under IUCN (World Conservation Union) criteria
How Personality Became Treatable:The Mutual Constitution of Clinical Knowledge and Mental Health Law
In recent years, personality disorders – psychiatric constructs understood as enduring dysfunctions of personality – have come into ever-greater focus for British policymakers, mental health professionals and service-users. Disputes have focussed largely on highly controversial attempts by the UK Department of Health to introduce mental health law and policy (now enshrined within the 2007 Mental Health Act of England and Wales). At the same time, clinical framings of personality disorder have dramatically shifted: once regarded as untreatable conditions, severe personality disorders are today thought of by many clinicians to be responsive to psychiatric and psychological intervention. In this article, I chart this transformation by means of a diachronic analysis of debates and institutional shifts pertaining to both attempts to change the law, and understandings of personality disorder. In so doing, I show how mental health policy and practice have mutually constituted one another, such that the aims of clinicians and policymakers have come to be closely aligned. I argue that it is precisely through these reciprocally constitutive processes that the profound reconfiguration of personality disorder from being an obdurate to a plastic condition has occurred; this demonstrates the significance of interactions between law and the health professions in shaping not only the State’s management of pathology, but also perceptions of its very nature
From Rural Lands to Agribusiness Precincts: Agriculture in Metropolitan Sydney 1948–2018
Sydney is both the birthplace of the nation of Australia as well as its western agricultural tradition. Since its founding in 1788, Sydney has been a continually growing settlement whose significant metropolitan expansion has come at the expense of its immediate agricultural hinterland. While this phenomenon is not unique per se, Sydney's natural context presents a constrained and finite area of immediate and proximate land available for local production of fresh food. Official metropolitan planning commenced in Sydney from 1945 and the first scheme in 1948 provided genuine but only rudimentary strategic and statutory consideration for the preservation and continued use of its agricultural lands. Sydney's subsequent eight metropolitan plans have given agriculture lip service at best and complete disregard at worst, largely treating it as land awaiting ‘higher' economic development. Maximizing short-term financial windfalls through urban land development continues to undermine Sydney's local food supply security, while gearing food supply to an energy-intensive ‘just-in-time’ system sourcing from further afield. The latest (2018) metropolitan plan has evolved to high-tech indoor food production for lucrative overseas markets via a new ‘aerotropolis' precinct. Sydney’s metropolitan agriculture has thus been remade into a late fossil fuel era expression of corporate and neoliberal industrial agribusiness
Measurement of the top quark-pair production cross section with ATLAS in pp collisions at \sqrt{s}=7\TeV
A measurement of the production cross-section for top quark pairs(\ttbar)
in collisions at \sqrt{s}=7 \TeV is presented using data recorded with
the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Events are selected in two
different topologies: single lepton (electron or muon ) with large
missing transverse energy and at least four jets, and dilepton (,
or ) with large missing transverse energy and at least two jets. In a
data sample of 2.9 pb-1, 37 candidate events are observed in the single-lepton
topology and 9 events in the dilepton topology. The corresponding expected
backgrounds from non-\ttbar Standard Model processes are estimated using
data-driven methods and determined to be events and events, respectively. The kinematic properties of the selected events are
consistent with SM \ttbar production. The inclusive top quark pair production
cross-section is measured to be \sigmattbar=145 \pm 31 ^{+42}_{-27} pb where
the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The measurement

Inclusive search for same-sign dilepton signatures in pp collisions at root s=7 TeV with the ATLAS detector
An inclusive search is presented for new physics in events with two isolated leptons (e or mu) having the same electric charge. The data are selected from events collected from p p collisions at root s = 7 TeV by the ATLAS detector and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 34 pb(-1). The spectra in dilepton invariant mass, missing transverse momentum and jet multiplicity are presented and compared to Standard Model predictions. In this event sample, no evidence is found for contributions beyond those of the Standard Model. Limits are set on the cross-section in a fiducial region for new sources of same-sign high-mass dilepton events in the ee, e mu and mu mu channels. Four models predicting same-sign dilepton signals are constrained: two descriptions of Majorana neutrinos, a cascade topology similar to supersymmetry or universal extra dimensions, and fourth generation d-type quarks. Assuming a new physics scale of 1 TeV, Majorana neutrinos produced by an effective operator V with masses below 460 GeV are excluded at 95% confidence level. A lower limit of 290 GeV is set at 95% confidence level on the mass of fourth generation d-type quarks
