I denna uppsats analyseras Sergels torg i Stockholm. In this essay Sergels torg in Stockholm will be analysed. Sergels torg is one of Stockholm’s most central public squares where tens of thousands of people pass every day on there’re way to close by destinations like the subway station, city shopping or the cultural centre. The place was built in the 1960 when other ideals than the ones we have today where present. A high quality in public places in the city is more important now than ever because of the densification of cities. Safety, interaction, climate, sound and experience in the public space is important aspects of the public space that researchers in the field discus. One researcher in the field is Vikas Mehta, who also have created a method to evaluate public spaces. The purpose of this essay is to apply the five dimensions of Vikas Mehtas theoretical framework on Sergels torg. With inventory, analysis, program and a sketch of a vision for the place the question for this essay will be answered. The sketch and the program will suggest how Sergels torg could be developed from Mehta’s theories. More seating and more trees is what is central for how the public square could be developed architecturally. More furniture will make more people stay in the square. The trees will contribute with more sensory experiences. The essay ends in a discussion about how the program and the sketch relates to the research in the field and how well Mehta’s analysis worked. The architectural design of Sergels torg is something that will affect a lot of people. That is why detailed analysis of the place is important for a potential new architectural design of the place

Vi vill med arbetet Ă€ven belysa vĂ€rdet av grön- och blĂ„struktur i staden för dess ekosystemtjĂ€nster och biologiska mĂ„ngfald, men Ă€ven för mĂ€nniskans fysiska och psykiska hĂ€lsa.“SakthusomrĂ„det” in Stockholm is a neighbourhood with a rich history which will be rebuilt according to the municipality’s plan for the area. The rebuilding will result in a new metro station in the middle of SlakthusomrĂ„det, which means that the current metro stations “Globen” and “Enskede gĂ„rd” will be shut down. The area of train tracks between the stations “Sockenplan” and “Gullmarsplan” will be put out of function as a result. The plans that Stockholm’s municipality has for Globen metro station is exploitation for buildings. The purpose of this master thesis is to create a different proposal for the municipality’s plans for the disused train track area between Globen’s metro station and Lindeparken. The land that will be used for buildings could have been used to strengthen the blue and green structure in the area. The new plans for SlakthusomrĂ„det to become a modern neighbourhood follows the ongoing trend of densification within urban planning. With this master thesis we want to question the densification trend and investigate an option for exploitation for the train track area by Globens metro station. By working with a green proposal we see an opportunity for this area to become a place for recreation as well as a reinforcement of the surrounding green structure. Densification of cities does not only lead to a reduction of green structure but leads to the rebuilding of old industrial neighbourhoods as well. The ambition with this thesis is to shed light on the importance of preserving the cultural heritage of industrial neighbourhoods such as SlakthusomrĂ„det. The result of this master thesis is a design proposal called “Slakthusparken”. The design proposal has been adapted to the site with important subjects as ecological sustainability, social sustainability and preservation of cultural and historical values incorporated into it. Trends within urban planning are often regarded as norms and are not questioned enough. With densification and rebuilding of industrial areas in mind, this thesis want to show the important role landscape architects have in working with preserving the cultural and historical values of industrial areas. In this thesis we also want to show the great importance of green and blue structure in the city for its ecosystem services and contribution to biodiversity as well as humans’ mental and physical health

Physics and Astrophysics of Strange Quark Matter

3-flavor quark matter (strange quark matter; SQM) can be stable or metastable for a wide range of strong interaction parameters. If so, SQM can play an important role in cosmology, neutron stars, cosmic ray physics, and relativistic heavy-ion collisions. As an example of the intimate connections between astrophysics and heavy-ion collision physics, this Chapter gives an overview of the physical properties of SQM in bulk and of small-baryon number strangelets; discusses the possible formation, destruction, and implications of lumps of SQM (quark nuggets) in the early Universe; and describes the structure and signature of strange stars, as well as formation and detection of strangelets in cosmic rays. It is concluded, that astrophysical and laboratory searches are complementary in many respects, and that both should be pursued to test the intriguing possibility of a strange ground state for hadronic matter, and (more generally) to improve our knowledge of the strong interactions.Comment: 45 pages incl. figures. Nucleon and hadron structure changes in the nuclear medium and impact on observables

We review the effect of hadron structure changes in a nuclear medium using the quark-meson coupling (QMC) model, which is based on a mean field description of non-overlapping nucleon (or baryon) bags bound by the self-consistent exchange of scalar and vector mesons. This approach leads to simple scaling relations for the changes of hadron masses in a nuclear medium. It can also be extended to describe finite nuclei, as well as the properties of hypernuclei and meson-nucleus deeply bound states. It is of great interest that the model predicts a variation of the nucleon form factors in nuclear matter. We also study the empirically observed, Bloom-Gilman (quark-hadron) duality. Other applications of the model include subthreshold kaon production in heavy ion collisions, D and D-bar meson production in antiproton-nucleus collisions, and J/Psi suppression. In particular, the modification of the D and D-bar meson properties in nuclear medium can lead to a large J/Psi absorption cross section, which explains the observed J/Psi suppression in relativistic heavy ion collisions.Comment: 143 pages, 77 figures, references added, a review article accepted in Prog. Thermal spikes from stopped muons and density effects in muon-catalyzed fusion

    No full text
Local hot regions caused by energy deposition from stopped muons can significantly influence the cycle rate of muon catalyzed fusion. The observed nonlinear density dependence of molecular formation rates is explained as a result of the temperature dependence since muonic deuterium-tritium molecules are formed at a high effective temperature that increases roughly linearly with density

Fights for Rights : A Case Study of Two Vigilante Women's Movements: The Suffragettes and The Gulabi Gang

    No full text
This thesis is a comparative case study of the Suffragette movement and the Gulabi Gang, two women’s movements using violence as a political strategy to fight patriarchal structures. Studying vigilante women’s movements is important as the current literature on the relationship between women and violence is deficient, focusing on women as victims of violence but neglecting the idea of women as contributors to violence. This study therefore aims to challenge the idea of female pacifism and to acknowledge women as rational, and sometimes violent, actors. This will be done by comparing the Suffragette movement and the Gulabi Gang, two most-different cases of vigilante women’s movements, with the purpose to find the motivations behind their strategic choice of violence. The study is of an explorative kind, aiming to contribute to the existing theories of vigilantism with why some women’s groups have felt compelled to step outside of traditional stereotypes and norms attributed to women to achieve their goals. The result shows that the existing theories explaining the motivations to vigilante actions coincide with the Suffragettes and the Gulabi Gang. They are however also proven to not adequately explain why some women’s movements use violence. This study therefore contributes, to the existing theories, with the conclusion that women’s movements use violence, generally seen as a masculine strategy, to shock and surprise the people and the decision-makers. The use of violence, in other words, creates a disturbance in the societal structures as a result of women generally being unexpected to use such strategies. It furthermore creates opportunities for the groups to increase the attention devoted to them in ways that would not have been possible if the groups would use more feminine strategies

SÀkerhetspolitisk bristvara? : en kartlÀggning av svensk sÀkerhetsstrategi efter Försvarsbeslut 15

This study examines the Swedish defense bill from 2015 to work out if the content can be considered as an official national security strategy of Sweden and if it can be considered a balanced strategy.  The main conclusion of the study is that the defense bill contains information about the basic strategic components of ends, means, ways and context at the security strategy level. What is lacking is an analysis of the means available to Sweden. The study find that the strategy of the bill contains the elements of a security strategy. There is need of descriptions and analysis of the Swedish interior strategic context as well as the political, diplomatic, economic and strategic communications means available, and how they are to be deployed by the Swedish government to produce desired ends. The balance between end, ways, means and context in the Swedish security strategy is varying from reasonably good to non-existing, depending on the measured area.
