    Microwave properties of Nd_0.5Sr_0.5MnO_3: a key role of the (x^2-y^2)-orbital effects

    Transmittance of the colossal magnetoresistive compound Nd_0.5Sr_0.5MnO_3 showing metal-insulator phase transition has been studied by means of the submm- and mm-wavelength band spectroscopy. An unusually high transparency of the material provided direct evidence for the significant suppression of the coherent Drude weight in the ferromagnetic metallic state. Melting of the A-type antiferromagnetic states has been found to be responsible for a considerable increase in the microwave transmission, which was observed at the transition from the insulating to the metallic phase induced by magnetic field or temperature. This investigation confirmed a dominant role of the (x^2-y^2)-orbital degree of freedom in the low-energy optical properties of Nd_0.5Sr_0.5MnO_3 and other doped manganites with planar (x^2-y^2)-orbital order, as predicted theoretically.     Description of coordinatively unsaturated sites regeneration over MoS2-based HDS catalysts using 35S experiments combined with computer simulations

    By combining experimental results and computer simulations, we previously showed that the coordinatively unsaturated sites (CUS) formation over MoS2 is most likely to occur on the MoS2 metallic edge through the departure of an H2S molecule. In the present paper, we aimed at examining the H2S departure from MoS2 catalysts promoted with Co and Ni. The [35S]DBT HDS experiments results showed that over CoMoS/Al2O3 and NiMoS/Al2O3 catalysts, the activation energy of the H2S release reaction is essentially the same with respective values of 7.4 kcal.mol-1 and 7.9 kcal.mol-1. Considering the H2S departure activation energy in the case of the non-promoted MoS2 surface (10 ~ 12 kcal.mol-1), this result illustrates the synergetic effect between Mo and Co or Ni in terms of CUS regeneration easiness. Further, preliminary computer simulations results showed that for S atoms bridged between Co atoms, a mechanism implying H2S departure from the metallic edge cannot be reasonably envisaged. Moreover, on the sulfur edge the H2S release activation energy is too high (~ 13.5 kcal.mol-1) if we consider experimental results on CoMo/Al2O3 catalysts but not incompatible with the experimental value obtained over Co/Al2O3 catalysts (ca. 10 kcal.mol-1), which suggests that the mechanism on the promoted catalyst differs from that on the un-promoted one

    Stromal-Cell and Cytokine-Dependent Lymphocyte Clones Which Span the Pre-B- to B-Cell Transition

    Five stromal-cell-dependent lymphocyte clones are described that correspond to late pre-B or early B-cell stages of differentiation.They are useful for determining the molecular requirements for pre-B replication, for studying the stromal cells that supply those factors, and for delineating the final sequence of differentiation events as newly formed lymphocytes prepare to exit the bone marrow. The efficiency of lymphocyte growth at limiting dilution varied substantially on different stromal-cell clones and may reflect functional heterogeneity of stromal cells. Most lymphocyte clones were similar to uncloned lymphocytes from Whitlock-Witte cultures in that they responded only transiently to interleukin-7 (IL-7) and then died, unless maintained on a stromal-cell clone. One unusual lymphocyte clone (2E8) was propagated for more than 1 year in IL-7 alone and was selectively responsive to that cytokine. Most of the lymphocyte clones were not tumorigenic in immunodeficient mice. However, one pre-B clone (1A9)’grew autonomously in culture when held at high density, responded to conditioned medium from a number of cell lines, and was tumorigenic. Tumors derived from this clone were infiltrated by stromal cells and lymphocytes taken from the tumors' retained characteristics of the original clone. Ly-6 antigens were inducible on 2E8 and 1A9 cells, but the lymphocytes were otherwise arrested in differentiation. The 2E8 cells had rearranged and expressed κ light-chain genes but displayed them on the surface along with surrogate light chains and μ heavy chains. Thus, expression of authentic Tight chain need not coincide with termination of surrogate light-chain utilization in newly formed B cells. Several glycoproteins have recently been demonstrated to be associated with surface immunoglobulin (Ig) on mature B-lineage cells and plasma-cell tumors. We now show that one member of this family (approximately 33 kD) was associated with the μ+surrogate light-chain complex on the 1A9 pre-B-cell clone. When compared to mature B lymphomas, fewer bands coprecipitated with the surface-labeled Ig isolated from pre-B- and early B-cell lines, suggesting that components of the antigen receptor are sequentially acquired during development. The normal replication and differentiation of pre-B cells is probably regulated by complex interactions with multiple cytokines and matrix components of the marrow microenvironment. Cloned lymphocyte lines that are dependent on stromal cells should continue to be important tools for molecular definition of those interactions

    Quantitative measurement of tool embodiment for virtual reality input alternatives

    Funding: Ontario Ministry of Research and Innovation and Science and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada for funding.Virtual reality (VR) strives to replicate the sensation of the physical environment by mimicking people’s perceptions and experience of being elsewhere. These experiences are often mediated by the objects and tools we interact with in the virtual world (e.g., a controller). Evidence from psychology posits that when using the tool proficiently, it becomes embodied (i.e., an extension of one’s body). There is little work, however, on how to measure this phenomenon in VR, and on how different types of tools and controllers can affect the experience of interaction. In this work, we leverage cognitive psychology and philosophy literature to construct the Locus-of-Attention Index (LAI), a measure of tool embodiment. We designed and conducted a study that measures readiness-to-hand and unreadiness-to-hand for three VR interaction techniques: hands, a physical tool, and a VR controller. The study shows that LAI can measure differences in embodiment with working and broken tools and that using the hand directly results in more embodiment than using controllers.Postprin

    Discovery of Water Maser Emission in Five AGN and a Possible Correlation Between Water Maser and Nuclear 2-10 keV Luminosities

    We report the discovery of water maser emission in five active galactic nuclei (AGN) with the 100-m Green Bank Telescope (GBT). The positions of the newly discovered masers, measured with the VLA, are consistent with the optical positions of the host nuclei to within 1 sigma (0.3 arcsec radio and 1.3 arcsec optical) and most likely mark the locations of the embedded central engines. The spectra of three sources, 2MASX J08362280+3327383, NGC 6264, and UGC 09618 NED02, display the characteristic spectral signature of emission from an edge-on accretion disk with maximum orbital velocity of ~700, ~800, and ~1300 km s^-1, respectively. We also present a GBT spectrum of a previously known source MRK 0034 and interpret the narrow Doppler components reported here as indirect evidence that the emission originates in an edge-on accretion disk with orbital velocity of ~500 km s^-1. We obtained a detection rate of 12 percent (5 out of 41) among Seyfert 2 and LINER systems with 10000 km s^-1 < v_sys < 15000 km s^-1. For the 30 nuclear water masers with available hard X-ray data, we report a possible relationship between unabsorbed X-ray luminosity (2-10 keV) and total isotropic water maser luminosity, L_{2-10} proportional to L_{H2O}^{0.5+-0.1}, consistent with the model proposed by Neufeld and Maloney in which X-ray irradiation and heating of molecular accretion disk gas by the central engine excites the maser emission.Comment: 16 pages, 5 tables, 3 figures, to appear in the November 10, 2006, v651n2 issue of the Astrophysical Journa

    Discovery of Candidate H2_2O Disk Masers in AGN and Estimations of Centripetal Accelerations

    Based on spectroscopic signatures, about one-third of known H2_2O maser sources in active galactic nuclei (AGN) are believed to arise in highly inclined accretion disks around central engines. These "disk maser candidates" are of interest primarily because angular structure and rotation curves can be resolved with interferometers, enabling dynamical study. We identify five new disk maser candidates in studies with the Green Bank Telescope, bringing the total number published to 30. We discovered two (NGC1320, NGC17) in a survey of 40 inclined active galaxies (v_{sys}< 20000 kms^{-1}). The remaining three disk maser candidates were identified in monitoring of known sources: NGC449, NGC2979, NGC3735. We also confirm a previously marginal case in UGC4203. For the disk maser candidates reported here, inferred rotation speeds are 130-500 kms^{-1}. Monitoring of three more rapidly rotating candidate disks (CG211, NGC6264, VV340A) has enabled measurement of likely orbital centripetal acceleration, and estimation of central masses (2-7x10^7 M_\odot) and mean disk radii (0.2-0.4pc). Accelerations may ultimately permit estimation of distances when combined with interferometer data. This is notable because the three AGN are relatively distant (10000<v_{sys}<15000 kms^{-1}). As signposts of highly inclined geometries at galactocentric radii of \sim0.1-1pc, disk masers also provide robust orientation references that allow analysis of (mis)alignment between AGN and surrounding galactic stellar disks, even without interferometric mapping. We find no preference among published disk maser candidates to lie in high-inclination galaxies, providing independent support for conclusions that central engines and galactic plane orientations are not correlated.     In this paper we study the tachyonic inflation in brane world cosmology with Gauss-Bonnet term in the bulk. We obtain the exact solution of slow roll equations in case of exponential potential.     Fibronectin receptor exhibits high lateral mobility in embryonic locomoting cells but is immobile in focal contacts and fibrillar streaks in stationary cells

    The dynamic process of embryonic cell motility was investigated by analyzing the lateral mobility of the fibronectin receptor in various locomotory or stationary avian embryonic cells, using the technique of fluorescence recovery after photobleaching. The lateral mobility of fibronectin receptors, labeled by a monoclonal antibody, was defined by the diffusion coefficient and mobile fraction of these receptors. Even though the lateral diffusion coefficient did not vary appreciably (2 X 10(-10) cm2/S less than or equal to D less than or equal to 4 X 10(-10) cm2/S) with the locomotory state and the cell type, the mobile fraction was highly dependent on the degree of cell motility. In locomoting cells, the population of fibronectin receptors, which was uniformly distributed on the cell surface, displayed a high mobile fraction of 66 +/- 19% at 25 degrees C (82 +/- 14% at 37 degrees C). In contrast, in nonmotile cells, the population of receptors was concentrated in focal contacts and fibrillar streaks associated with microfilament bundles and, in these sites, the mobile fraction was small (16 +/- 8%). When cells were in a stage intermediate between highly motile and stationary, the population of fibronectin receptors was distributed both in focal contacts with a small mobile fraction and in a diffuse pattern with a reduced mobile fraction (33 +/- 9%) relative to the diffuse population in highly locomotory cells. The mobile fraction of the fibronectin receptor was found to be temperature dependent in locomoting but not in stationary cells. The mobile fraction could be modulated by affecting the interaction between the receptor and the substratum. The strength of this interaction could be increased by growing cells on a substratum coated with polyclonal antibodies to the receptor. This caused the mobile fraction to decrease. The interaction could be decreased by using a probe, monoclonal antibodies to the receptor known to perturb the adhesion of certain cell types which caused the mobile fraction to increase. From these results, we conclude that in locomoting embryonic cells, most fibronectin receptors can readily diffuse in the plane of the membrane. This degree of lateral mobility may be correlated to the labile adhesions to the substratum presumably required for high motility. In contrast, fibronectin receptors in stationary cells are immobilized in focal contacts and fibrillar streaks which are in close association with both extracellular and cytoskeletal structures; these stable complexes appear to provide firm anchorage to the substratum

    Testing the generality of above-ground biomass allometry across plant functional types at the continent scale

    Accurate ground-based estimation of the carbon stored in terrestrial ecosystems is critical to quantifying the global carbon budget. Allometric models provide cost-effective methods for biomass prediction. But do such models vary with ecoregion or plant functional type? We compiled 15,054 measurements of individual tree or shrub biomass from across Australia to examine the generality of allometric models for prediction above-ground biomass. This provided a robust case study because Australia includes ecoregions ranging from arid shrublands to tropical rainforests, and has a rich history of biomass research, particularly in planted forests. Regardless of ecoregion, for five broad categories of plant functional type (shrubs; multi-stemmed trees; trees of the genus Eucalyptus and closely related genera; other trees of high wood density; and other trees of low wood density), relationships between biomass and stem diameter were generic. Simple power-law models explained 84-95% of the variation in biomass, with little improvement in model performance when other plant variables (height, bole wood density), or site characteristics (climate, age, management) were included. Predictions of stand-based biomass from allometric models of varying levels of generalisation (species-specific, plant functional type) were validated using whole-plot harvest data from 17 contrasting stands (range: 9 to 356 Mg ha(-1) ). Losses in efficiency of prediction were &lt; 1% if generalised models were used in place of species-specific models. Furthermore, application of generalised multi-species models did not introduce significant bias in biomass prediction in 92% of the 53 species tested. Further, overall efficiency of stand-level biomass prediction was 99%, with a mean absolute prediction error of only 13%. Hence, for cost-effective prediction of biomass across a wide range of stands, we recommend use of generic allometric models based on plant functional types. Development of new species-specific models is only warranted when gains in accuracy of stand-based predictions are relatively high (e.g. high-value monocultures).     Associations between branched chain amino acid intake and biomarkers of adiposity and cardiometabolic health independent of genetic factors: a twin study

    Background: Conflicting data exist on the impact of dietary and circulating levels of branched chain amino acids (BCAA) on cardiometabolic health and it is unclear to what extent these relations are mediated by genetics.  Methods: In a cross-sectional study of 1997 female twins we examined associations between BCAA intake, measured using food frequency-questionnaires, and a range of markers of cardiometabolic health, including DXA-measured body fat, blood pressure, HOMA-IR, highsensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) and lipids. We also measured plasma concentrations of BCAA and known metabolites of amino acid metabolism using untargeted mass spectrometry. Using a within-twin design, multivariable analyses were used to compare the associations between BCAA intake and endpoints of cardiometabolic health, independently of genetic confounding.  Results: Higher BCAA intake was significantly associated with lower HOMA-IR (-0.1, Ptrend 0.02), insulin (-0.5 µU/mL, P-trend 0.03), hs-CRP -0.3 mg/L, P-trend 0.01), systolic blood pressure (-2.3 mm Hg, P-trend 0.01) and waist-to-height ratio (-0.01, P-trend 0.04), comparing extreme quintiles of intake. These associations persisted in within-pair analysis for monozygotic twins for insulin resistance (P<0.01), inflammation (P=0.03), and blood pressure (P=0.04) suggesting independence from genetic confounding. There were no association between BCAA intake and plasma concentrations, although two metabolitespreviously associated with obesity were inversely associated with BCAA intake (alphahydroxyisovalerate and trans-4-hydroxyproline).  Conclusions: Higher intakes of BCAA were associated, independently of genetics, with lower insulin resistance, inflammation, blood pressure and adiposity-related metabolites.
