Search for the electroweak production of supersymmetric particles in sqrt(s)=8  TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

The ATLAS experiment has performed extensive searches for the electroweak production of charginos, neutralinos, and staus. This article summarizes and extends the search for electroweak supersymmetry with new analyses targeting scenarios not covered by previously published searches. New searches use vectorboson fusion production, initial-state radiation jets, and low-momentum lepton final states, as well as multivariate analysis techniques to improve the sensitivity to scenarios with small mass splittings and low-production cross sections. Results are based on 20 fb−1 of proton-proton collision data at √s = 8 TeV recorded with the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. No significant excess beyond Standard Model expectations is observed. The new and existing searches are combined and interpreted in terms of 95% confidence-level exclusion limits in simplified models, where a single production process and decay mode is assumed, as well as within phenomenological supersymmetric models

Measurement of the b(b)over-bar dijet cross section in pp collisions at root s=7TeV with the ATLAS detector

The dijet production cross section for jets containing a b-hadron (b-jets) has been measured in proton-proton collisions with a centre-of-mass energy of [Formula: see text] TeV, using the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The data used correspond to an integrated luminosity of [Formula: see text]. The cross section is measured for events with two identified b-jets with a transverse momentum [Formula: see text] GeV and a minimum separation in the [Formula: see text]-[Formula: see text] plane of [Formula: see text]. At least one of the jets in the event is required to have [Formula: see text] GeV. The cross section is measured differentially as a function of dijet invariant mass, dijet transverse momentum, boost of the dijet system, and the rapidity difference, azimuthal angle and angular distance between the b-jets. The results are compared to different predictions of leading order and next-to-leading order perturbative quantum chromodynamics matrix elements supplemented with models for parton-showers and hadronization

Hysteretic Dynamics of Multi-Stable Early Afterdepolarisations with Repolarisation Reserve Attenuation: A Potential Dynamical Mechanism for Cardiac Arrhythmias

Abstract Some cardiovascular and non-cardiovascular drugs frequently cause excessive prolongation of the cardiac action potential (AP) and lead to the development of early afterdepolarisations (EADs), which trigger lethal ventricular arrhythmias. Combining computer simulations in APs with numerical calculations based on dynamical system theory, we investigated stability changes of APs observed in a paced human ventricular myocyte model by decreasing and/or increasing the rapid (I Kr) and slow (I Ks) components of delayed rectifying K+ current. Upon reducing I Kr, the APs without EADs (no-EAD response) showed gradual prolongation of AP duration (APD), and were annihilated without AP configuration changes due to the occurrence of saddle-node bifurcations. This annihilation caused a transition to an AP with EADs as a new stable steady state. Furthermore, reducing repolarisation currents (repolarisation reserve attenuation) evoked multi-stable states consisting of APs with different APDs, and caused multiple hysteretic dynamics. Depending on initial ion circumstances within ventricular myocytes, these multi-stable AP states might increase the local/global heterogeneity of AP repolarisations in the ventricle. Thus, the EAD-induced arrhythmias with repolarisation reserve attenuation might be attributed to the APD variability caused by multi-stability in cardiac AP dynamics
