Fluctuation and flow probes of early-time correlations in relativistic heavy ion collisions
Fluctuation and correlation observables are often measured using
multi-particle correlation methods and therefore mutually probe the origins of
genuine correlations present in multi-particle distribution functions. We
investigate the common influence of correlations arising from the spatially
inhomogeneous initial state on multiplicity and momentum fluctuations as well
as flow fluctuations. Although these observables reflect different aspects of
the initial state, taken together, they can constrain a correlation scale set
at the earliest moments of the collision. We calculate both the correlation
scale in an initial stage Glasma flux tube picture and the modification to
these correlations from later stage hydrodynamic flow and find quantitative
agreement with experimental measurements over a range of collision systems and
energies.Comment: Proceedings of the 28th Winter Workshop on Nuclear Dynamics, Dorado

Effective Rheology of Bubbles Moving in a Capillary Tube
We calculate the average volumetric flux versus pressure drop of bubbles
moving in a single capillary tube with varying diameter, finding a square-root
relation from mapping the flow equations onto that of a driven overdamped
pendulum. The calculation is based on a derivation of the equation of motion of
a bubble train from considering the capillary forces and the entropy production
associated with the viscous flow. We also calculate the configurational
probability of the positions of the bubbles.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur
Enhanced production of multi-strange hadrons in high-multiplicity proton-proton collisions
At sufficiently high temperature and energy density, nuclear matter undergoes a transition to a phase in which quarks and gluons are not confined: the quark-gluon plasma (QGP)(1). Such an exotic state of strongly interacting quantum chromodynamics matter is produced in the laboratory in heavy nuclei high-energy collisions, where an enhanced production of strange hadrons is observed(2-6). Strangeness enhancement, originally proposed as a signature of QGP formation in nuclear collisions(7), is more pronounced for multi-strange baryons. Several effects typical of heavy-ion phenomenology have been observed in high-multiplicity proton-proton (pp) collisions(8,9), but the enhanced production of multi-strange particles has not been reported so far. Here we present the first observation of strangeness enhancement in high-multiplicity proton-proton collisions. We find that the integrated yields of strange and multi-strange particles, relative to pions, increases significantly with the event charged-particle multiplicity. The measurements are in remarkable agreement with the p-Pb collision results(10,11), indicating that the phenomenon is related to the final system created in the collision. In high-multiplicity events strangeness production reaches values similar to those observed in Pb-Pb collisions, where a QGP is formed.Peer reviewe
The upgrade of the ALICE TPC with GEMs and continuous readout
The upgrade of the ALICE TPC will allow the experiment to cope with the high interaction rates foreseen for the forthcoming Run 3 and Run 4 at the CERN LHC. In this article, we describe the design of new readout chambers and front-end electronics, which are driven by the goals of the experiment. Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) detectors arranged in stacks containing four GEMs each, and continuous readout electronics based on the SAMPA chip, an ALICE development, are replacing the previous elements. The construction of these new elements, together with their associated quality control procedures, is explained in detail. Finally, the readout chamber and front-end electronics cards replacement, together with the commissioning of the detector prior to installation in the experimental cavern, are presented. After a nine-year period of R&D, construction, and assembly, the upgrade of the TPC was completed in 2020.publishedVersio

Charged-particle multiplicity fluctuations in PbâPb collisions at âsNN =Â 2.76Â TeV
Measurements of event-by-event fluctuations of charged-particle multiplicities in PbâPb collisions at âsNN = 2.76 TeV using the ALICE detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) are presented in the pseudorapidity range |η|<0.8 and transverse momentum 0.2<pT<2.0 GeV/c. The amplitude of the fluctuations is expressed in terms of the variance normalized by the mean of the multiplicity distribution. The η and pT dependences of the fluctuations and their evolution with respect to collision centrality are investigated. The multiplicity fluctuations tend to decrease from peripheral to central collisions. The results are compared to those obtained from HIJING and AMPT Monte Carlo event generators as well as to experimental data at lower collision energies. Additionally, the measured multiplicity fluctuations are discussed in the context of the isothermal compressibility of the high-density strongly-interacting system formed in central PbâPb collisions.publishedVersio
Search for collectivity with azimuthal J/psi-hadron correlations in high multiplicity p-Pb collisions at ,root s(NN)=5.02 and 8.16 TeV
We present a measurement of azimuthal correlations between inclusive J/psi and charged hadrons in p-Pb collisions recorded with the ALICE detector at the CERN LHC. The J/psi are reconstructed at forward (p-going, 2.03 <y <3.53) and backward (Pb-going, -4.46 <y <-2.96) rapidity via their mu(+)mu(-) decay channel, while the charged hadrons are reconstructed at mid-rapidity (vertical bar eta vertical bar <1.8). The correlations are expressed in terms of associated charged-hadron yields per W . trigger. A rapidity gap of at least 1.5 units is required between the trigger J/psi and the associated charged hadrons. Possible correlations due to collective effects are assessed by subtracting the associated per-trigger yields in the low-multiplicity collisions from those in the high-multiplicity collisions. After the subtraction, we observe a strong indication of remaining symmetric structures at Delta phi approximate to 0 and Delta phi approximate to pi), similar to those previously found in two-particle correlations at middle and forward rapidity. The corresponding second-order Fourier coefficient (v(2) ) in the transverse momentum interval between 3 and 6 GeV/c is found to be positive with a significance of about 5 sigma. The obtained results are similar to the J/psi v(2) coefficients measured in Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN) = 5.02 TeV, suggesting a common mechanism at the origin of the J/psi v(2) . Production of pions, kaons, and protons as a function of the relative transverse activity classifier in pp collisions at = 13 TeV
Abstract: The production of ϱ, K±, and ( p )p is measured in pp collisions at âs = 13 TeV
in different topological regions of the events. Particle transverse momentum (pT) spectra are
measured in the âtowardâ, âtransverseâ, and âawayâ angular regions defined with respect
to the direction of the leading particle in the event. While the toward and away regions
contain the fragmentation products of the near-side and away-side jets, respectively, the
transverse region is dominated by particles from the Underlying Event (UE). The relative
transverse activity classifier, RT = NT/ăNTă, is used to group events according to their UE
activity, where NT is the measured charged-particle multiplicity per event in the transverse
region and ăNTă is the mean value over all the analysed events. The first measurements
of identified particle pT spectra as a function of RT in the three topological regions are
reported. It is found that the yield of high transverse momentum particles relative to the
RT-integrated measurement decreases with increasing RT in both the toward and the away
regions, indicating that the softer UE dominates particle production as RT increases and
validating that RT can be used to control the magnitude of the UE. Conversely, the spectral
shapes in the transverse region harden significantly with increasing RT. This hardening
follows a mass ordering, being more significant for heavier particles. Finally, it is observed
that the pT-differential particle ratios (p + p )/(Ï+ + Ïâ) and (K+ + Kâ)/(Ï+ + Ïâ) in
the low UE limit (RT â 0) approach expectations from Monte Carlo generators such as
PYTHIA 8 with Monash 2013 tune and EPOS LHC, where the jet-fragmentation models
have been tuned to reproduce e+eâ results
Measurement of azimuthal correlations of D mesons with charged particles in pp collisions at âs=7 TeV and p-Pb collisions at âsNN=5.02 TeV
The azimuthal correlations of D mesons with charged particles were measured with the ALICE apparatus in pp collisions at root s = 7 TeV and p-Pb collisions at root sNN = 5.02 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider. D-0, D+, and D*+ mesons and their charge conjugates with transverse momentum 3 0.3 GeV/c. The yield of charged particles in the correlation peak induced by the jet containing the D meson and the peak width are compatible within uncertainties in the two collision systems. The data are described within uncertainties by Monte-Carlo simulations based on PYTHIA, POWHEG, and EPOS 3 event generators.Peer reviewe
Coherent J/Ï and Ï photoproduction at midrapidity in ultra-peripheral PbâPb collisions at âsNN = 5.02 TeV
The coherent photoproduction of J/ÏJ/Ï and ÏâČÏâČ mesons was measured in ultra-peripheral PbâPb collisions at a center-of-mass energy sNNââââ = 5.02sNN = 5.02 TeV with the ALICE detector. Charmonia are detected in the central rapidity region for events where the hadronic interactions are strongly suppressed. The J/ÏJ/Ï is reconstructed using the dilepton (l+lâl+lâ) and protonâantiproton decay channels, while for the ÏâČÏâČ the dilepton and the l+lâÏ+Ïâl+lâÏ+Ïâ decay channels are studied. The analysis is based on an event sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 233 ÎŒbâ1ÎŒbâ1. The results are compared with theoretical models for coherent J/ÏJ/Ï and ÏâČÏâČ photoproduction. The coherent cross section is found to be in a good agreement with models incorporating moderate nuclear gluon shadowing of about 0.64 at a Bjorken-x of around 6Ă10â46Ă10â4, such as the EPS09 parametrization, however none of the models is able to fully describe the rapidity dependence of the coherent J/ÏJ/Ï cross section including ALICE measurements at forward rapidity. The ratio of ÏâČÏâČ to J/ÏJ/Ï coherent photoproduction cross sections was also measured and found to be consistent with the one for photoproduction off protons.publishedVersio
