In this study, it is aimed to present a framework for a school-based adjustment program for immigrant students living in Turkey and at primary school level. Adjustment to school is one of the priority needs of immigrant students. School adjustment is a structure that involves many dimensions and is influenced by many factors. Therefore, in the draft program proposed in the study, Ecological System Approach was taken as the basis for effectively addressing the multidimensional structure of school adaptation. As the draft program is based on the ecological system approach, the program aims to provide students, teachers, parents and community (local government, civil society, etc.). In this program, activities related to ecological system approach are planned for organism, microsystem, mesosystem and exosystem steps. It is aimed to increase the adjustment of immigrant students to the school with the program presented in the framework and thus to increase their social harmony and to be healthy and productive individuals in the future by meeting their developmental needs. It is also considered that the program proposal meets a significant need for teachers, parents, and school administrators, especially for immigrant students. © 2020, Ankara University.

Objectives:It is important to determine variables that influence intraocular pressure (IOP) measurement. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of body position on IOP.Materials and Methods:The study included 52 right eyes of 52 patients who presented to the ophthalmology department of our hospital and had no ocular disease except refractive errors. IOP was measured with an Icare PRO tonometer while patients were in sitting, standing, and supine positions, with intervals of 10 minutes between the positions. Correlations between the results were evaluated using Spearman’s correlation analysis and Wilcoxon tests.Results:Thirty-six of the 52 patients were female, 16 were male. Mean age was 31.65±6.30 (23-47) years. Mean IOP values in the sitting, standing, and lying positions were 17.76±3.41 (12.70-25.60) mmHg, 17.10±3.27 (11.50-25.20) mmHg, and 18.46±4.67 (10.50-29.40) mmHg, respectively. There were no statistically significant differences between measurements taken in the different positions (p=0.112, p=0.472, p=0.071). We observed that there was no relationship between age and body position (p>0.45, p>0.79, p>0.77) or between gender and position (p>0.59, p>0.69, p>0.54).Conclusion:Gender and age had no effect on IOP measured in different body positions. There were also no significant differences between IOP values measured in the different positions. Therefore, we believe the portable Icare PRO tonometer can be used for patients who are confined to bed and will provide IOP measurements that are concordant with values obtained while sitting

The aim of this study was to determine the contributions of smart boards that are used within School of Foreign Languages at Namık Kemal University to students’ motivation levels and learning styles with a questionnaire. Students were asked questions regarding their learning styles and motivation levels and in this way, they were requested to evaluate classroom environment through their own eyes. During the data collection process, 189 students (63 from each course) were randomly chosen from English, German, and French elective courses to participate in the survey. The survey was analyzed by using SPSS PASW STATISTICS 18.0 “Network”. The results of the study showed that most of the participating students utilized some kinds of strategies in their language learning process in their own way; however, it was found that students were not totally aware of the effectiveness of these strategies. Secondly, students mentioned that one of the factors that motivates to learn a foreign language is the use of technological innovations within the learning environment. Although students manifested an open attitude towards all kinds of innovation in their language learning process; in the final analysis, they were found to prefer being passive listeners instead of active participants in the classroom while learning a foreign language. It can be argued that students’ attitude and success at foreign language courses will be positively affected by the conscious, effective use of especially smart boards and other teaching support tools with all their properties. The results of the current study have showed that technological innovations used in the classroom environment can create interest in the target subject and make the learning process more fun besides reframing the subject more interesting. These types of innovations increase student participation in the following classes and profoundly enhances students’ eagerness and motivation to learn. In this way, students will be able to make use of media support while they are determining their own learning strategies for foreign language learning

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic had a considerable impact on the provision of structural heart intervention worldwide. Our objectives were: 1) to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) activity globally; and 2) to determine the differences in the impact according to geographic region and the demographic, development, and economic status of diverse international health care systems. Methods: We developed a multinational registry of global TAVR activity and invited individual TAVR sites to submit TAVR implant data before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Specifically, the number of TAVR procedures performed monthly from January 2019 to December 2021 was collected. The adaptive measures to maintain TAVR activity by each site were recorded, as was a variety of indices relating to type of health care system and national economic indices. The primary subject of interest was the impact on TAVR activity during each of the pandemic waves (2020 and 2021) compared with the same period pre–COVID-19 (2019). Results: Data were received from 130 centers from 61 countries, with 14 subcontinents and 5 continents participating in the study. Overall, TAVR activity increased by 16.7% (2,337 procedures) between 2018 and 2019 (ie, before the pandemic), but between 2019 and 2020 (ie, first year of the pandemic), there was no significant growth (–0.1%; –10 procedures). In contrast, activity again increased by 18.9% (3,085 procedures) between 2020 and 2021 (ie, second year of the pandemic). During the first pandemic wave, there was a reduction of 18.9% (945 procedures) in TAVR activity among participating sites, while during the second and third waves, there was an increase of 6.7% (489 procedures) and 15.9% (1,042 procedures), respectively. Further analysis and results of this study are ongoing and will be available at the time of the congress. Conclusion: The COVID-19 pandemic initially led to a reduction in the number of patients undergoing TAVR worldwide, although health care systems subsequently adapted, and the number of TAVR recipients continued to grow in subsequent COVID-19 pandemic waves. Juxtaposing BTE and ATE – on the role of the European insurance industry in funding civil litigation

One of the ways in which legal services are financed, and indeed shaped, is through private insurance arrangement. Two contrasting types of legal expenses insurance contracts (LEI) seem to dominate in Europe: before the event (BTE) and after the event (ATE) legal expenses insurance. Notwithstanding institutional differences between different legal systems, BTE and ATE insurance arrangements may be instrumental if government policy is geared towards strengthening a market-oriented system of financing access to justice for individuals and business. At the same time, emphasizing the role of a private industry as a keeper of the gates to justice raises issues of accountability and transparency, not readily reconcilable with demands of competition. Moreover, multiple actors (clients, lawyers, courts, insurers) are involved, causing behavioural dynamics which are not easily predicted or influenced. Against this background, this paper looks into BTE and ATE arrangements by analysing the particularities of BTE and ATE arrangements currently available in some European jurisdictions and by painting a picture of their respective markets and legal contexts. This allows for some reflection on the performance of BTE and ATE providers as both financiers and keepers. Two issues emerge from the analysis that are worthy of some further reflection. Firstly, there is the problematic long-term sustainability of some ATE products. Secondly, the challenges faced by policymakers that would like to nudge consumers into voluntarily taking out BTE LEI
