Negotiating Interior Frontiers: Lara Haddad’s A Question of History (2015–16)
Bringing together insights originating in law studies and art analysis, this article approaches the work of the US-based Syrian artist Lara Haddad through the figuration of “interior frontiers,” exposing how both “interior bonds” and “internal borders” tended to shape legal regulations introduced in the US in the aftermath of 9/11 for the purpose of conducting “the global war on terror.” Referring to the concept of “plasticity,” the article examines the intimate (dis)identifications experienced by the artist in the context of the politically saturated cultural discourses on violence which emerged from the post-9/11 spatialities of (inter)national law. The article argues that politically engaged art offers a means to affectively connect with the personal ways of coping with the persistent visceral presence of structural violence, shedding light on how political protocols and cultural representations impinge upon the individual experiences of many Muslims residing inside and outside the US territory. Opening established meanings to new interpretations, such art contributes to the process of revising dominant oppressive significations, creating room for critical contestation and increased transcultural understanding
Against the “Moonlight and Magnolia” myth of the American South. A new materialist approach to the dissonant heritage of slavery in the US: The case of Whitney Plantation in Wallace, LA
The article presents an analysis of the operations of the Whitney Plantation Museum, which opened in 2014 in Wallace, LA (USA), situated within the context of plantation heritage tourism in the American South. The argumentation offers an illustration of the significant transition, even though still of marginal character, of the dominant tendencies of representing slavery in heritage sites (plantation museums) devoted to cultivating knowledge about the history of the region. New materialist in its orientation, the analysis subscribes to the most fundamental assumption of this philosophical tendency, namely that knowledge is generated in material-semiotic ways, and applies this approach in an enquiry into the educational experience offered to visitors by this heritage site. The article argues that although the emergence of institutions such as Whitney Plantation is meant to pluralise the memorial landscape of a given community, rather than serving as multivocal spaces they tend to remain steeped in fragmentatio

O związkach pamięci zbiorowej i polityki zagranicznej. Jad wa-Szem jako przykład wykorzystania traumy Zagłady w dyskursie dotyczącym konfliktu izraelsko-palestyńskiego
Adopting a new materialist perspective, the article analyzes the exhibition offered by the historical museum of Yad Vashem in Jerusalem to commemorate Shoah. It aims at exposing the subtle references the exhibition makes to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The argumentation reveals the multiple ways in which official strategies of remembering the traumatic past are shaped by contemporary discourses or political challenges, placing emphasis on the important intersections of historical policy and current political ventures

Legal Realism and the Social Contract: Fuller’s Public Jurisprudence of Form, Private Jurisprudence of Substance
The underlying theme of this edited collection is gendered citizenship, as well as the challenges and limits that confront the gendering of citizenship. It critiques the notion of the genderless nation-state citizen — in both analytical and policy terms and contexts — and necessarily engages with at least three major sets of contradictions or tensions: limitations on achieving gender equal or gender equitable citizenship; relations and differences between gender equality policy, diversity policy, and gender mainstreaming; and interplays of academic analyses of and practical interventions on gendered citizenship. Contributors from diverse scientific disciplines and academic backgrounds aim to provide a better understanding of the challenges that societies within Europe and elsewhere face vis-à-vis diversity, regionalism, transnationalism, and migration
Crowds, Events, Enaction: Liminal Politics at the Chattri Memorial
This chapter analyses how memorialising and heritage-making by an affective crowd asserted a postcolonial politics. The Chattri Memorial is a remembrance space situated near Brighton, UK, built in 1921, to mark Indian soldiers who fought during the First World War. It explores how a heterogeneous community of local veterans, Indian organisations, and onlookers from mixed origins performed a horizontal politics through an experienced event. It engages participants’ affective event-making as conscious ‘past-presencing’ (Macdonald, Memorylands: Heritage and Identity in Europe Today, Routledge, London, 2013), and analyses how their annual acts of presencing in this space constitutes the enaction of citizenship (Isin, in: Isin & Nielsen (eds.), Acts of Citizenship, Zed Books, London, 2008). The communal rite of memorialising was a political event not only for witnessing, belonging, and gaining recognition, but also for making conscious interventions over the racialising discourses that are a fact of life for participants
Progress in dark tourism and thanatourism research: An uneasy relationship with heritage tourism
This paper reviews academic research into dark tourism and thanatourism over the 1996–2016 period. The aims of this paper are threefold. First, it reviews the evolution of the concepts of dark tourism and thanatourism, highlighting similarities and differences between them. Second it evaluates progress in 6 key themes and debates. These are: issues of the definition and scope of the concepts; ethical issues associated with such forms of tourism; the political and ideological dimensions of dark tourism and thanatourism; the nature of demand for places of death and suffering; the management of such places; and the methods of research used for investigating such tourism. Third, research gaps and issues that demand fuller scrutiny are identified. The paper argues that two decades of research have not convincingly demonstrated that dark tourism and thanatourism are distinct forms of tourism, and in many ways they appear to be little different from heritage tourism
