    Angiomotin like-1 is a novel component of the N-cadherin complex affecting endothelial/pericyte interaction in normal and tumor angiogenesis

    Transmission of mechanical force via cell junctions is an important component that molds cells into shapes consistent with proper organ function. Of particular interest are the cadherin transmembrane proteins, which play an essential role in connecting cell junctions to the intra-cellular cytoskeleton. Understanding how these biomechanical complexes orchestrate intrinsic and extrinsic forces is important for our understanding of the underlying mechanisms driving morphogenesis. We have previously identified the Amot protein family, which are scaffold proteins that integrate polarity, junctional, and cytoskeletal cues to modulate cellular shape in endothelial as well as epithelial cells. In this report, we show that AmotL1 is a novel partner of the N-cadherin protein complex. We studied the role of AmotL1 in normal retinal as well as tumor angiogenesis using inducible endothelial-specific knock-out mice. We show that AmotL1 is essential for normal establishment of vascular networks in the post-natal mouse retina as well as in a transgenic breast cancer model. The observed phenotypes were consistent with a non-autonomous pericyte defect. We show that AmotL1 forms a complex with N-cadherin present on both endothelial cells and pericytes. We propose that AmotL1 is an essential effector of the N-cadherin mediated endothelial/pericyte junctional complex

    The Loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) is widely distributed in the Mediterranean Sea but, like other sea turtles, it is considered a threatened species. Improving anatomical knowledge on normal aspects of the species is important for correct diagnosis and proper therapy and, therefore, for improving the chances of a complete recovery and a fast reintroduction into the wild for a greater number of sea turtle bycatch and other mishaps. For this reason, 15 Loggerhead turtles, with clinically healthy eyes, were submitted to ocular ultrasonographic (US) examinations.     Effectiveness of University-Provided Individual Counselling for Healthcare Students: A Systematic Review

    Medical, nursing, and other healthcare students undergo specific stressors. Their mental health represents a priority for universities and the entire community. This review aimed to gather evidence about the effectiveness of individual psychological counselling offered by universities to healthcare students. A systematic review was conducted by searching PubMed, Scopus, and APA PsycInfo. A total of 1906 records were identified. The selection resulted in six studies published between 1994 and 2014. The most common design was quasi-experimental. Half focused on medical students and often interventions comprised other elements. Outcomes were related to mental health issues, academic performance, or both. The results showed statistically significant improvements, with some exceptions. The present review highlighted some specific characteristics that must be considered in order to fill the existing gap in this field, such as widening the range of studied outcomes, improving the description of the intervention, and planning randomized controlled trials (RCT) to compare strategies

    Antimicrobial stewardship programs in acute-care hospitals: a multicenter assessment of structure, process, and outcome indicators in Italy and Spain

    Background: Antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) programs have been differently implemented across Europe. This study primarily aimed to compare AMS in two European regions. Secondarily, the study explored the COVID-19 pandemic impact on surrogate outcome indicators of AMS. Methods: A retrospective observational study was conducted in Piedmont (Italy) and Catalonia (Spain). AMS programs were compared through structure and process indicators in 2021. Changes in surrogate outcome indicators (antimicrobial usage; alcohol-based sanitizer consumption; antimicrobial resistance, AMR) from 2017 to 2021 described the pandemic impact. Results: Seventy-eight facilities provided structure and process indicators. Catalonia showed better structure scores (p < 0.001) and less dispersion in both indicators. The greatest areas to improve were accountability (Piedmont) and diversification of strategies (Catalonia). Overall, the regions reported consistent changes in outcome indicators. Antimicrobial usage decreased in 2020, returning to near-pre-pandemic levels in 2021. Alcohol-based sanitizer consumption surged in 2020, then dipped remaining above pre-pandemic levels. AMR trends were minimally affected. Conclusions: The centralized approach of Catalonia ensured consistent attainment of quality objectives across all facilities, but it may limit facility-specific strategies. In Piedmont, accountability remain one of the most critical factors as in previous years. The pandemic did not substantially disrupt surrogate outcome measures of AMS. However, the data on AMR suggest that maintaining vigilance against this issue remains paramount

    Time resolved X-ray spectral analysis during optical dips and accretion bursts in stars with disks of NGC 2264 from Chandra/ACIS-I and CoRoT data

    The simultaneous X-ray and optical observations with excellent time resolution of T Tauri stars with disks may provide insight on the accretion process and the properties of the inner disk. This was one of the motivations of the CSI 2264 campaign. In this talk I will show the results obtained from time resolved X-ray spectral analysis from deep Chandra/ACIS-I observations during the optical dips and accretion bursts isolated in the CoRoT light curves of the disk-bearing members of NGC 2264. These simultaneous Chandra-CoRoT data allow us to find evidence of increasing X-ray absorption during the optical dips, to study the composition of the material responsible for the variable extinction in these stars with disks, and to find evidence for soft X-ray emission observed during the optical bursts, and thus related to the accretion process

    Acute Delta Hepatitis in Italy spanning three decades (1991–2019): Evidence for the effectiveness of the hepatitis B vaccination campaign

    Updated incidence data of acute Delta virus hepatitis (HDV) are lacking worldwide. Our aim was to evaluate incidence of and risk factors for acute HDV in Italy after the introduction of the compulsory vaccination against hepatitis B virus (HBV) in 1991. Data were obtained from the National Surveillance System of acute viral hepatitis (SEIEVA). Independent predictors of HDV were assessed by logistic-regression analysis. The incidence of acute HDV per 1-million population declined from 3.2 cases in 1987 to 0.04 in 2019, parallel to that of acute HBV per 100,000 from 10.0 to 0.39 cases during the same period. The median age of cases increased from 27 years in the decade 1991-1999 to 44 years in the decade 2010-2019 (p &lt; .001). Over the same period, the male/female ratio decreased from 3.8 to 2.1, the proportion of coinfections increased from 55% to 75% (p = .003) and that of HBsAg positive acute hepatitis tested for by IgM anti-HDV linearly decreased from 50.1% to 34.1% (p &lt; .001). People born abroad accounted for 24.6% of cases in 2004-2010 and 32.1% in 2011-2019. In the period 2010-2019, risky sexual behaviour (O.R. 4.2; 95%CI: 1.4-12.8) was the sole independent predictor of acute HDV; conversely intravenous drug use was no longer associated (O.R. 1.25; 95%CI: 0.15-10.22) with this. In conclusion, HBV vaccination was an effective measure to control acute HDV. Intravenous drug use is no longer an efficient mode of HDV spread. Testing for IgM-anti HDV is a grey area requiring alert. Acute HDV in foreigners should be monitored in the years to come

    [A mammographic evaluation of the morphostructural variations of the breast during hormone-replacement therapy in the postmenopause].

    Exogenous hormones may cause breast tissue changes, generally increasing its density. We used mammography to detect the to early effects of hormone replacement therapy in postmenopausal women. We examined 300 postmenopausal women (group A: 70 women in surgical menopause treated with estrogen replacement therapy; group B: 230 women in spontaneous menopause receiving estrogen and progestin replacement therapy). The mammographic patterns, according to Wolfe's classification, were compared with those of group C (case control group of 300 women) and group X after 1 year of therapy. The modification were classified as total and partial changes in mammographic density. The results were analyzed with Pearson's chi 2 test. The evidence of a change in parenchymal pattern was found in 103/300 women (34.3%). Twenty-one women in group A and 82 in group B showed increased mammographic density (the DY breast by Wolfe). Partial changes were observed in 64 cases (21.3%). Comparing groups A and B to groups C and X (before therapy), the changes were statistically significant (p < .001), while comparing groups A and B the difference was not significant (p = 1.000). The likely widespread use of hormone replacement therapy in the future will require an increase in the number of mammograms and a possible re-evaluation of sensitivity. To improve follow-up timing and to avoid a decrease in sensitivity, radiologists will have to consider both general and specific factors and to pay attention to the patterns of global increase in breast tissue density, the DY pattern of Wolfe's classification
