    We report on the performance of a 1 m3^{3} TPC filled with CF4_{4} at 3 bar, immersed in liquid scintillator and viewed by photomultipliers. Particle detection, event identification and localization achieved by measuring both the current signal and the scintillation light are presented. Particular features of α\alpha particle detection are also discussed. Finally, the 54{54}Mn photopeak, reconstructed from the Compton scattering and recoil angle is shown.Comment: Latex, 19 pages, 20 figure

    Late-onset thyrotoxicosis after the cessation of amiodarone

    Introduction: Amiodarone is a highly effective antiarrhythmic-drug with well recognized toxic side-effects. The effects of the drug late in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) is not well described. Methods and results: We present a single centre prospectively collected series of patients with thyrotoxicosis occurring late after the cessation of amiodarone. Between 2006 and 2018, 8 patients were identified with amiodarone induced thyrotoxicosis (AIT). Amiodarone was prescribed for AF in 7 patients and ventricular tachycardia in 1 patient. Mean duration of therapy was 329 [42–1092] days, mean dose of 200 ± 103.5 mg/day. Amiodarone use was short term (<140 days) in 4 of the 8 cases, with one treated for 42 days. Patients presented with symptoms including weight loss, tremors, palpitations, AF, sweats all indicative of AIT at a median of 347 [60–967] days post cessation. Thyroid function testing confirmed suppressed thyroid stimulating hormone and elevated T levels in all patients. Nuclear thyroid imaging in all cases demonstrated low uptake of iodine indicative of Type II AIT. All patients recovered following pharmaceutical treatment with Carbimazole and Prednisolone. Conclusions: We describe a series of patients with late thyrotoxicosis after exposure to amiodarone. Our findings highlight the need for a high-index of clinical suspicion for AIT regardless of treatment duration or time after cessation of amiodarone.Melissa E. Middeldorp, Adrian D.     Cerebral blood flow and cognitive performance in postural tachycardia syndrome: insights from sustained cognitive stress test

    BACKGROUND: The physiology underlying "brain fog" in the absence of orthostatic stress in postural tachycardia syndrome(POTS) remains poorly understood. METHODS AND RESULTS: We evaluated cognitive and hemodynamic responses (cardiovascular and cerebral: heart rate, blood pressure, end-tidal carbon dioxide, and cerebral blood flow velocity (CBFv) in the middle cerebral artery at baseline, after initial cognitive testing, and after (30-minutes duration) prolonged cognitive stress test (PCST) whilst seated; as well as after 5-minute standing in consecutively enrolled participants with POTS (n=22) and healthy controls (n=18). Symptom severity was quantified with orthostatic hypotensive questionnaire at baseline and end of study. Subjects in POTS and control groups were frequency age- and sex-matched (29±11 versus 28±13 years; 86 versus 72% women, respectively; both P≥0.4). The CBFv decreased in both groups (condition, P=0.04) following PCST, but a greater reduction in CBFv was observed in the POTS versus control group (−7.8% versus −1.8%; interaction, P=0.038). Notably, the reduced CBFv following PCST in the POTS group was similar to that seen during orthostatic stress (60.0±14.9 versus 60.4±14.8 cm/s). Further, PCST resulted in greater slowing in psychomotor speed (6.1% versus 1.4%, interaction, P=0.027) and a greater increase in symptom scores at study completion (interaction, P0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Reduced CBFv and cognitive dysfunction were evident in patients with POTS following prolonged cognitive stress even in the absence of orthostatic stress.Rachel Wells, Varun Malik, Anthony G.     Spin relaxation in (110) and (001) InAs/GaSb superlattices

    We report an enhancement of the electron spin relaxation time (T1) in a (110) InAs/GaSb superlattice by more than an order of magnitude (25 times) relative to the corresponding (001) structure. The spin dynamics were measured using polarization sensitive pump probe techniques and a mid-infrared, subpicosecond PPLN OPO. Longer T1 times in (110) superlattices are attributed to the suppression of the native interface asymmetry and bulk inversion asymmetry contributions to the precessional D'yakonov Perel spin relaxation process. Calculations using a nonperturbative 14-band nanostructure model give good agreement with experiment and indicate that possible structural inversion asymmetry contributions to T1 associated with compositional mixing at the superlattice interfaces may limit the observed spin lifetime in (110) superlattices. Our findings have implications for potential spintronics applications using InAs/GaSb heterostructures.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure

    Rationale and design of the IRON-AF study: a double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled study to assess the effect of intravenous ferric carboxymaltose in patients with atrial fibrillation and iron deficiency

    Introduction: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is associated with significantly impaired quality-of-life. Iron deficiency (ID) is prevalent in patients with AF. Correction of ID in other patient populations with intravenous iron supplementation has been shown to be a safe, convenient and effective way of improving exercise tolerance, fatigue and quality-of-life. The IRON-AF (Effect of Iron Repletion in Atrial Fibrillation) study is designed to assess the effect of iron repletion with intravenous ferric carboxymaltose in patients with AF and ID. Methods and Analysis: The IRON-AF study is a double-blind, randomised controlled trial that will recruit at least 84 patients with AF and ID. Patients will be randomised to receive infusions of either ferric carboxymaltose or placebo, given in repletion and then maintenance doses. The study will have follow-up visits at weeks 4, 8 and 12. The primary endpoint is change in peak oxygen uptake from baseline to week 12, as measured by cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) on a cycle ergometer. Secondary endpoints include changes in quality-of-life and AF disease burden scores, blood parameters, other CPET parameters, transthoracic echocardiogram parameters, 6-minute walk test distance, 7-day Holter/Event monitor burden of AF, health resource utilisation and mortality. Ethics and dissemination: The study protocol has been approved by the Central Adelaide Local Health Network Human Research Ethics Committee, Australia.     Origins of the Ambient Solar Wind: Implications for Space Weather

    The Sun's outer atmosphere is heated to temperatures of millions of degrees, and solar plasma flows out into interplanetary space at supersonic speeds. This paper reviews our current understanding of these interrelated problems: coronal heating and the acceleration of the ambient solar wind. We also discuss where the community stands in its ability to forecast how variations in the solar wind (i.e., fast and slow wind streams) impact the Earth. Although the last few decades have seen significant progress in observations and modeling, we still do not have a complete understanding of the relevant physical processes, nor do we have a quantitatively precise census of which coronal structures contribute to specific types of solar wind. Fast streams are known to be connected to the central regions of large coronal holes. Slow streams, however, appear to come from a wide range of sources, including streamers, pseudostreamers, coronal loops, active regions, and coronal hole boundaries. Complicating our understanding even more is the fact that processes such as turbulence, stream-stream interactions, and Coulomb collisions can make it difficult to unambiguously map a parcel measured at 1 AU back down to its coronal source. We also review recent progress -- in theoretical modeling, observational data analysis, and forecasting techniques that sit at the interface between data and theory -- that gives us hope that the above problems are indeed solvable.Comment: Accepted for publication in Space Science Reviews.     Search for a W' boson decaying to a bottom quark and a top quark in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV

    Results are presented from a search for a W' boson using a dataset corresponding to 5.0 inverse femtobarns of integrated luminosity collected during 2011 by the CMS experiment at the LHC in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV. The W' boson is modeled as a heavy W boson, but different scenarios for the couplings to fermions are considered, involving both left-handed and right-handed chiral projections of the fermions, as well as an arbitrary mixture of the two. The search is performed in the decay channel W' to t b, leading to a final state signature with a single lepton (e, mu), missing transverse energy, and jets, at least one of which is tagged as a b-jet. A W' boson that couples to fermions with the same coupling constant as the W, but to the right-handed rather than left-handed chiral projections, is excluded for masses below 1.85 TeV at the 95% confidence level. For the first time using LHC data, constraints on the W' gauge coupling for a set of left- and right-handed coupling combinations have been placed.     Search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying into two photons in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV

    A search for a Higgs boson decaying into two photons is described. The analysis is performed using a dataset recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC from pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, which corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.8 inverse femtobarns. Limits are set on the cross section of the standard model Higgs boson decaying to two photons. The expected exclusion limit at 95% confidence level is between 1.4 and 2.4 times the standard model cross section in the mass range between 110 and 150 GeV. The analysis of the data excludes, at 95% confidence level, the standard model Higgs boson decaying into two photons in the mass range 128 to 132 GeV. The largest excess of events above the expected standard model background is observed for a Higgs boson mass hypothesis of 124 GeV with a local significance of 3.1 sigma. The global significance of observing an excess with a local significance greater than 3.1 sigma anywhere in the search range 110-150 GeV is estimated to be 1.8 sigma. More data are required to ascertain the origin of this excess.Comment: Submitted to Physics Letters
