The astrometric data reduction software (ADRS) and error budget for PRIMA
The Astrometric Data-Reduction Software (ADRS) processes fringe, delay, environmental, and calibration data for PRIMA narrow-angle astrometry. It is automated software designed to provide fully-calibrated differential delays and separation angles. The ADRS is divided into on-line and off-line processing. The former deals with calibration and data compression, while the latter applies corrections and calculates science quantities. PRIMA is the first VLTI instrument that may require removal of long-term environmental trends. The trend identification and fitting routines are not part of the distributed on-line and off-line processing software. Instead, files containing fit parameters will be updated regularly. Coding is presently underway. The PRIMA error budget summarizes the principal sources of error in PRIMA astrometric observation
Cardiovascular disease in a cohort exposed to the 1940-45 Channel Islands occupation
BACKGROUND
To clarify the nature of the relationship between food deprivation/undernutrition during pre- and postnatal development and cardiovascular disease (CVD) in later life, this study examined the relationship between birth weight (as a marker of prenatal nutrition) and the incidence of hospital admissions for CVD from 1997–2005 amongst 873 Guernsey islanders (born in 1923–1937), 225 of whom had been exposed to food deprivation as children, adolescents or young adults (i.e. postnatal undernutrition) during the 1940–45 German occupation of the Channel Islands, and 648 of whom had left or been evacuated from the islands before the occupation began.
METHODS
Three sets of Cox regression models were used to investigate (A) the relationship between birth weight and CVD, (B) the relationship between postnatal exposure to the occupation and CVD and (C) any interaction between birth weight, postnatal exposure to the occupation and CVD. These models also tested for any interactions between birth weight and sex, and postnatal exposure to the occupation and parish of residence at birth (as a marker of parish residence during the occupation and related variation in the severity of food deprivation).
RESULTS
The first set of models (A) found no relationship between birth weight and CVD even after adjustment for potential confounders (hazard ratio (HR) per kg increase in birth weight: 1.12; 95% confidence intervals (CI): 0.70 – 1.78), and there was no significant interaction between birth weight and sex (p = 0.60). The second set of models (B) found a significant relationship between postnatal exposure to the occupation and CVD after adjustment for potential confounders (HR for exposed vs. unexposed group: 2.52; 95% CI: 1.54 – 4.13), as well as a significant interaction between postnatal exposure to the occupation and parish of residence at birth (p = 0.01), such that those born in urban parishes (where food deprivation was worst) had a greater HR for CVD than those born in rural parishes. The third model (C) found no interaction between birth weight and exposure to the occupation (p = 0.43).
CONCLUSION
These findings suggest that the levels of postnatal undernutrition experienced by children, adolescents and young adults exposed to food deprivation during the 1940–45 occupation of the Channel Islands were a more important determinant of CVD in later life than the levels of prenatal undernutrition experienced in utero prior to the occupatio
Large dust particles in disks around T Tauri stars
We present 7-mm continuum observations of 14 low-mass pre-main-sequence stars
in the Taurus-Auriga star-forming region obtained with the Very Large Array
with ~1.5" resolution and ~0.3 mJy rms sensitivity. For 10 objects, the
circumstellar emission has been spatially resolved. The large outer disk radii
derived suggest that the emission at this wavelength is mostly optically thin.
The millimetre spectral energy distributions are characterised by spectral
indices alpha = 2.3 to 3.2. After accounting for contribution from free-free
emission and corrections for optical depth, we determine dust opacity indices
beta in the range 0.5 to 1.6, which suggest that millimetre-sized dust
aggregates are present in the circumstellar disks. Four of the sources with
beta > 1 may be consistent with submicron-sized dust as found in the
interstellar medium. Our findings indicate that dust grain growth to
millimetre-sized particles is completed within less than 1 Myr for the majority
of circumstellar disks.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure
Interstellar polarization and grain alignment: the role of iron and silicon
We compiled the polarimetric data for a sample of lines of sight with known
abundances of Mg, Si, and Fe. We correlated the degree of interstellar
polarization and polarization efficiency (the ratio of to the colour
excess or extinction ) with dust phase abundances. We detect an
anticorrelation between and the dust phase abundance of iron in non
silicate - containing grains ]_\rm d, a correlation
between and the abundance of Si, and no correlation between or
and dust phase abundances. These findings can be explained if mainly
the silicate grains aligned by the radiative mechanism are responsible for the

Circumstellar masers in the Magellanic Clouds
We have searched for 22 GHz H2O and 43/86/129 GHz SiO masers in bright IRAS
point sources in the SMC and LMC, to test whether the kinematics of the mass
loss from these stars depends on metallicity. H2O masers were detected in the
red supergiants IRAS04553-6825 and IRAS05280-6910, and tentatively in the
luminous IR object IRAS05216-6753 and the AGB star IRAS05329-6708. SiO masers
were detected in IRAS04553-6825. The outflow velocity increases between the H2O
masing zone near the dust-formation region and the more distant OH masing zone
from 18 to 26 km/s for IRAS04553-6825 and from 6 to 17 km/s for IRAS05280-6910.
The total sample of LMC targets is analysed in comparison with circumstellar
masers in the Galactic Centre. The photon fluxes of circumstellar masers in the
LMC are very similar to those in the Galactic Centre. The expansion velocities
in the LMC appear to be 20% lower than for similarly bright OH masers in the
Galactic Centre, but the data are consistent with no difference in expansion
velocity. OH/IR stars in the LMC appear to have slower accelerating envelopes
than OH/IR stars in the Galactic Centre. Masers in the LMC have blue-asymmetric
emission profiles. This may be due to the amplification of stellar and/or
free-free radiation, rather than the amplification of dust emission, and may be
more pronounced in low metallicity envelopes. SiO maser strength increases with
the photometric amplitude at 2.2 micron but is independent of the photometric
amplitude at 10 micron. This suggests a strong connection between shocks in the
dust-free SiO masing zone and the dust formation process. Appendices describe

Three-micron spectra of AGB stars and supergiants in nearby galaxies
The dependence of stellar molecular bands on the metallicity is studied using
infrared L-band spectra of AGB stars (both carbon-rich and oxygen-rich) and
M-type supergiants in the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (LMC and SMC) and
in the Sagittarius Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy. The spectra cover SiO bands for
oxygen-rich stars, and acetylene (C2H2), CH and HCN bands for carbon-rich AGB
stars. The equivalent width of acetylene is found to be high even at low
metallicity. The high C2H2 abundance can be explained with a high
carbon-to-oxygen (C/O) ratio for lower metallicity carbon stars. In contrast,
the HCN equivalent width is low: fewer than half of the extra-galactic carbon
stars show the 3.5micron HCN band, and only a few LMC stars show high HCN
equivalent width. HCN abundances are limited by both nitrogen and carbon
elemental abundances. The amount of synthesized nitrogen depends on the initial
mass, and stars with high luminosity (i.e. high initial mass) could have a high
HCN abundance. CH bands are found in both the extra-galactic and Galactic
carbon stars. None of the oxygen-rich LMC stars show SiO bands, except one
possible detection in a low quality spectrum. The limits on the equivalent
widths of the SiO bands are below the expectation of up to 30angstrom for LMC
metallicity. Several possible explanations are discussed. The observations
imply that LMC and SMC carbon stars could reach mass-loss rates as high as
their Galactic counterparts, because there are more carbon atoms available and
more carbonaceous dust can be formed. On the other hand, the lack of SiO
suggests less dust and lower mass-loss rates in low-metallicity oxygen-rich
stars. The effect on the ISM dust enrichment is discussed.Comment: accepted for A&
The T Tauri star RY Tau as a case study of the inner regions of circumstellar dust disks
We study the inner region of the circumstellar disk around the TTauri star RY
Tau. Our aim is to find a physical description satisfying the available
interferometric data, obtained with the mid-infrared interferometric instrument
at the Very Large Telescope Interferometer, as well as the spectral energy
distribution. We also compare the findings with the results of similar studies,
including those of intermediate-mass stars. Our analysis is done within the
framework of a passive circumstellar disk, which is optionally supplemented by
the effects of accretion and an added envelope. To achieve a more consistent
and realistic model, we used our continuum transfer code MC3D. In addition, we
studied the shape of the 10um silicate emission feature in terms of the
underlying dust population, both for single-dish and for interferometric
measurements. We show that a modestly flaring disk model with accretion can
explain both the observed spectral energy distribution and the mid-infrared
visibilities obtained with the mid-infrared infrared instrument. We found an
interesting ambiguity: a circumstellar active disk model with an added
envelope, and a lower accretion rate than in the active disk model without
envelope, could represent the observations equally as well. This type of model
with the envelope should be considered a viable alternative in future models of
other TTauri stars. The approach of a disk with a puffed-up inner rim wall and
the influence of a stellar companion is also discussed. From the study of the
silicate emission feature we see evidence for dust evolution in a TTauri star,
with a decreasing fraction of small amorphous and an increasing fraction of
